Abstract

This research aims to analyze the symbolic meaning and religius values contained in the “Batammat Kaji” ritual and how these values are communicated through symbols and ritual interactions. This research uses a qualitative approach with semiotic analysis methods. Data was obtained through observation, in-depth interviews and documentation studies. The research results revealed that the “Batammat Kaji” ritual contains symbols that represent the teachings of the Islamic religion and the beliefs of the local Malay community. The verbal and non-verbal communication processes that occur during rituals function to build social bonds, strengthen Malay cultural identity, and convey religius messages. Religius values, such as faith, piety and spirituality, are strongly integrated into every stage and element of the ritual, reflecting the efforts of Malay society to harmonize cultural traditions and Islamic religius teachings. The conclusion of this research provides a more comprehensive understanding of the religius values contained in the “Batammat Kaji” tradition and how these values are communicated through symbols and ritual interactions by the Malay community in Asahan Regency. These findings can contribute to Malay cultural studies, cross-cultural communication studies, and understanding of the integration of religion and tradition in society.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of three communication models Newcomb, One-Step Flow, and Two-Step Flow  in the 2024 Regional Election digital campaign in North Sumatra. The method used is a qualitative approach with literature review, collecting secondary data from various related literature. Newcomb's model emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relationships in political communication, where potential leaders and voters must have the same attitude to increase the effectiveness of campaign messages. Through social media, these interpersonal relationships are built through two-way interactions that strengthen voter trust and loyalty. The One-Step Flow model, on the other hand, focuses on delivering a direct message from a candidate to an audience without traditional intermediaries. The use of platforms such as Instagram and Twitter allows potential leaders to convey messages quickly and responsively, especially to young voters who are more active in digital media. However, this model faces challenges in the dissemination of misinformation or manipulation of public opinion. The Two-Step Flow model underlines the important role of opinion leaders, such as influencers and community leaders, in filtering and disseminating campaign messages. They act as intermediaries who are able to bridge communication between prospective leaders and voters, provide more personalized interpretations, and increase voter participation. The results show that the combination of these three communication models forms a more holistic and adaptive digital campaign strategy. The proper use of social media, strong interpersonal interaction, and the involvement of opinion leaders can increase the effectiveness of campaigns, political participation, and a positive image of prospective leaders. This strategy is relevant in facing the diverse demographic and cultural challenges in North Sumatra, as well as helping to build the legitimacy of the candidates in the eyes of the public.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of information needs on youth drug prevention behavior through WhatsApp, using the Uses and Gratification theory. Drug abuse among the youth in Medan is a serious concern, necessitating an effective communication medium to raise awareness and prevention efforts. WhatsApp, as a popular communication application, has great potential in disseminating information related to drug prevention. The research method used is qualitative with a case study approach, where data was collected through interviews and participatory observation. The findings show that youths who feel their information needs are met through WhatsApp tend to be more cautious in their social interactions and more active in sharing information with peers. However, there are challenges in ensuring that all youth understand the content being shared, especially text-based content. The conclusion of this study states that WhatsApp is effective as a communication medium for drug prevention, especially if the content is tailored to the preferences of the youth.

This research uses descriptive research methods with a qualitative approach, with research subjects consisting of 4 middle school level teachers who are deaf. Data collection techniques were semi-structured interviews, passive participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis uses Miles, Huberman and Saldana theoretical techniques, namely data collection, data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The data validity technique that researchers use is source triangulation. Results. The results showed that the teacher’s interpersonal communication model in developing students’ self reliance at the Aceh Taming Pembina State Special School uses non-verbal and verbal communication. However, teachers often use non-verbal communication because of students’ limitations in hearing, making teachers and deaf students when interacting more dominantly use non-verbal communication. The effectiveness of teachers’ interpersonal communication with deaf students can be seen through 4 aspects, namely openness, empathy, supportive attitude, and positive attitude. There are 4 factors inhibiting teachers’  interpersonal communication with deaf students in improving the independence attitude of deaf students, namely: physical interference, physiological interference, psychological interference, and semantic interference. Conclusion. The conclusion of this research is that the teacher’s interpersonal communication model in developing student independence at the Tamiang Aceh Pembina State Special School uses non-verbal and verbal forms of communication. The meaning of verbal communication for tunagrahita is a sentence or utterance spoken from the mouth, or called a mouth mimic, while the nonverbal communication they use is called sign language or symbol language.

Abstract

The Sadbor dance phenomenon on TikTok shows how Indonesian farmers use social media as a survival strategy amid economic constraints. This trend emerged amidst a difficult economic situation, where many farmers were forced to seek additional income through digital platforms. This study aims to understand the Sadbor dance as a form of everyday resistance in the context of James Scott's theory and as a response to the Spiral of Silence by Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann. The novelty of this study lies in the effort to connect the socio-economic phenomenon of farmers with the theory of symbolic resistance in the digital era. This study uses a qualitative method with content analysis of the Sadbor dance video and public responses. The results show that the Sadbor dance is not just entertainment, but also a hidden medium of expression that reflects farmers' dissatisfaction with unfair economic conditions. The recommendation of this study is the need for more attention from the government to the welfare of farmers through stronger economic support, so that they have alternatives outside of social media to improve their standard of living.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of cultivation stimulus from social media on the communication tendencies of Generation Z. This generation grows up in the digital age with intensive exposure to social media content, which affects the way they interact and express themselves. The research method used is a qualitative approach with literature studies and in- depth interviews as data collection techniques. The literature study examined the theory of cultivation and the influence of social media, while in-depth interviews were conducted with members of Generation Z to gain an empirical perspective on their communication patterns. The results of the study show that the cultivation stimulus of social media, especially the content delivered by influencers, has a significant impact on shaping communication preferences. Generation Z is more likely to use visual symbols such as emojis and GIFs in digital communication, which shows an adaptation to the interactive features of social media platforms. In addition, it was found that social media facilitates active participation in social and political discussions, but also causes an echo chamber phenomenon that reinforces similar views. However, a high reliance on social media for social validation poses mental health risks, such as anxiety and depression. The study concludes that while social media provides opportunities for Generation Z to develop more expressive and socially engaged communication, good digital literacy is needed to mitigate any negative impacts that may arise. With a better understanding of the influence of cultivation stimulus, Generation Z can make wise and effective use of social media.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to evaluate and explore the application of the SMCR Model (Source, Message, Channel, Receiver) in public service communication strategies at the Department of Communication and Information (Kominfo) in Medan City, with particular emphasis on exploring patterns of communication effectiveness and public engagement. Methodology: The method used is a case study with data collection through interviews, observation, and documentation. The analysis is based on the SMCR components, including source, message, channel, and receiver. Results: The results show that the credibility of the information source, message clarity, and the use of diverse communication channels play significant roles in the effectiveness of public communication. However, challenges related to the digital divide still hinder information access for certain segments of society. Strategic implementation steps have been identified, including: establishing a multi-channel communication framework, developing capacity building programs for communication staff, implementing regular channel effectiveness monitoring systems, and creating targeted outreach programs for digitally underserved communities. Limitations: The limitation of this research lies in its limited regional scope and focus on a single institution, which may affect the generalizability of the findings. Contribution: The contribution of this study is providing practical recommendations for public institutions to develop more inclusive communication strategies, especially in addressing the digital divide through channel diversification and improving staff capacity.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the understanding of students of the State Islamic University (UIN) of North Sumatra towards the Theory of Attribution Communication and its implications for academic motivation and social interaction. Attribution Communication Theory is a theory that explains how individuals understand and interpret the causes of behavior, both from themselves and others. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, where data is obtained through in-depth interviews with UIN North Sumatra students. The results of the study show that students generally understand the difference between internal attribution (personal factors) and external (external factors). Internal attribution is often used to describe academic success, which is associated with higher motivation to learn. In contrast, external attribution is more used to explain failures, which tend to lower motivation. In addition, the religiosity factor plays a significant role in the attribution process, where students often associate academic outcomes with God's will. This study emphasizes the importance of understanding attribution in shaping students' motivation and social interaction, and recommends increasing awareness of the role of attribution in learning and group dynamics in the educational environment
