Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to explore how religious dakwah can raise community awareness and participation in stunting prevention efforts in Langkat Regency, where the prevalence of stunting is higher than the national average. This study introduced a novel approach by integrating religious dakwah with health communication to address stunting in rural areas. Methodology: A qualitative case study approach was used in the Langkat Regency, Indonesia. Newcomb’s Symmetrical Communication Theory was applied to create balanced two-way communication among religious leaders, healthcare workers, and the community. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with religious leaders, healthcare workers, and mothers of young children to capture their experiences and perspectives. Results: The findings demonstrated that combining transformative dakwah with health education effectively bridges communication gaps, increases community involvement, and enhances awareness of child nutrition. This integrated approach was found to be particularly effective in encouraging preventive behaviors within the community. Limitations: This study is limited to the specific cultural and geographical context of the Langkat Regency, which may affect the generalizability of the results to other regions with different cultural settings. Contribution: This study contributes to the field of health communication and community health by demonstrating the potential of integrating religious dakwah with health programs to prevent stunting. It is especially valuable for stakeholders in the health and religious sectors to seek culturally sensitive approaches to public health issues.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of three communication models Newcomb, One-Step Flow, and Two-Step Flow  in the 2024 Regional Election digital campaign in North Sumatra. The method used is a qualitative approach with literature review, collecting secondary data from various related literature. Newcomb's model emphasizes the importance of interpersonal relationships in political communication, where potential leaders and voters must have the same attitude to increase the effectiveness of campaign messages. Through social media, these interpersonal relationships are built through two-way interactions that strengthen voter trust and loyalty. The One-Step Flow model, on the other hand, focuses on delivering a direct message from a candidate to an audience without traditional intermediaries. The use of platforms such as Instagram and Twitter allows potential leaders to convey messages quickly and responsively, especially to young voters who are more active in digital media. However, this model faces challenges in the dissemination of misinformation or manipulation of public opinion. The Two-Step Flow model underlines the important role of opinion leaders, such as influencers and community leaders, in filtering and disseminating campaign messages. They act as intermediaries who are able to bridge communication between prospective leaders and voters, provide more personalized interpretations, and increase voter participation. The results show that the combination of these three communication models forms a more holistic and adaptive digital campaign strategy. The proper use of social media, strong interpersonal interaction, and the involvement of opinion leaders can increase the effectiveness of campaigns, political participation, and a positive image of prospective leaders. This strategy is relevant in facing the diverse demographic and cultural challenges in North Sumatra, as well as helping to build the legitimacy of the candidates in the eyes of the public.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to critically evaluate the North Sumatra Provincial Government's strategies in addressing social inequality using the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) model, focusing on how policies are formulated and implemented to tackle disparities in income, education, healthcare, and infrastructure access. Methodology/approach: The research employs a qualitative approach, using case studies and in-depth interviews with key informants from government institutions, such as Bappeda, the Department of Social Affairs, and the Department of Education. Secondary data, including official reports and statistics from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), is also analyzed. The data is processed through qualitative content analysis to identify key themes related to the government's response to social inequality. Results/findings: The study finds that while the North Sumatra government has launched several policies to address social inequality, including social assistance programs, infrastructure development, and education access improvements, these initiatives face significant challenges. These include uneven resource allocation, political interference, and logistical issues in reaching remote areas. The findings also highlight a lack of effective coordination between government agencies, which hampers the implementation of policies, particularly in rural and isolated regions. Limitations: The study's scope is limited to North Sumatra Province, and the findings may not be fully generalizable to other regions with different socio-economic contexts. Additionally, the reliance on qualitative data, such as interviews and document analysis, introduces the risk of subjective bias from informants and limited access to comprehensive quantitative data. Contribution: This research contributes to the literature on public policy and social inequality by applying the SOR model to a provincial context in Indonesia. It provides valuable insights into the challenges faced by local governments in addressing inequality and offers recommendations for improving policy formulation and implementation processes. The findings can inform future policy-making efforts and contribute to more effective responses to social inequality in other regions.

Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to examine communication patterns at Murni Teguh Rosiva Mother and Child Hospital (RSIA) in Medan, focusing on the effectiveness of organizational communication models as outlined by Fred C. Lunenburg, including chain, wheel, circle, Y, and all-channel communication structures, in supporting coordination, responsiveness, and healthcare service quality. Methodology/approach: A qualitative approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews and participatory observation with both medical and non-medical staff. Data collection focused on analyzing communication patterns within the hospital setting. Results/findings: The study revealed that each communication model presents unique strengths and limitations in facilitating information flow and decision-making processes. The chain and wheel models support structured information distribution but often result in delays during critical situations. The circle and Y patterns enable faster inter-unit collaboration but are susceptible to miscommunication due to varying professional backgrounds. The all-channel pattern in informal communication fosters staff solidarity but risks the spread of inaccurate information. Limitations: This study is limited to observational and interview-based data from a single healthcare institution, potentially restricting generalizability across different healthcare settings. Contribution: This research contributes to the development of a more responsive and collaborative communication system in healthcare institutions, particularly in enhancing operational support through adaptive communication frameworks.

Abstract

The transformation of digital media has changed the landscape of da'wah communication, encouraging da'i to adapt more relevant and participatory approaches. One platform that attracts attention is that blogs, although not as popular as mainstream social media such as YouTube or Instagram, still have the potential as a text-based and multimedia da'wah communication channel. This research aims to examine the use of blogs as a medium of Islamic da'wah by highlighting the form of interaction, content effectiveness, and communication dynamics between da'i and audiences. This study uses a qualitative approach to the case study method of three Indonesian-language Islamic blogs that have actively published da'wah content in the past year. Data was collected through analysis of blog content, in-depth interviews with blog managers and audiences, as well as participatory observations of the interactions in the comments column. Research shows that da'wah blogs serve as a dialogue space that allows audiences not only to receive religious messages, but also to provide feedback, questions, and discussions. The most effective types of content include practical worship articles, personal inspirational stories, and short video lectures. Two-way interactions and contextual message delivery increase audience involvement and their religious understanding. The study also noted significant challenges such as low comment moderation and the risk of unvalidated dissemination of religious information. The main contribution of this research is to affirm the blog's function as an alternative medium of personal, open, and needs-based da'wah, by integrating the Use and Gratifications theory in analyzing audience motivation.

Abstract

The potential of internet users, especially on social media, in Indonesia is substantial. The large number of users has resulted in a significant potential for national turmoil. Furthermore, the emergence of various elements in society that are intolerant and spread hoaxes adds to the national turmoil on social media, thereby misusing the meaning of democracy. This situation has prompted the government to take steps to address the country's divisions. At certain moments, the government takes actions to restrict the internet with the aim of maintaining national stability. These actions receive varied responses, both positive and negative. Based on these various factors, this research aims to examine the role of new media as a public space in responding to the genuine meaning of democracy. The theory employed is Jurgen Habermas's Public Sphere, where the internet should be a communicative space to create public rationality in achieving Deliberative Democracy. The research method involves a mix of literature review and quantitative descriptive methods. The SWOT analysis is used to assess the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of new media. The study's results indicate that the strength lies in the quantity and duration of internet users that can be maximized. Weaknesses include the quality and characteristics of users. There is potential in terms of infrastructure, reach, and proximity. Threats include both manifest issues such as hoaxes and incitement, as well as latent issues such as the failure to accommodate the needs of society.
