Abstract

Introduction: Tobacco consumption increases the risk of chronic diseases and death. In Indonesia, the prevalence of active smokers is estimated to reach 27% of the population, or 70 million people, with 7.4% of them aged 10-18 years. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of community smoking prevention education in enhancing adolescent knowledge in Banyuwangi, Indonesia. Methods: This study used a quasi-experimental research design with a pre- and post-test one-group approach. In this study, we employed total sampling as our sampling technique. The samples were students of class X SMA Negeri 1 Giri Banyuwangi, aged 14-16 years old. The intervention includes a presentation on long-term health consequences, the risk of addiction, and the adverse effects of smoking. Psychiatrists led our intervention, sharing general knowledge about smoking behavior and its risk for health outcomes. Results: The study ultimately employed a final sample of 49 participants. The paired t-test increased from the pre-test (53.47) to the post-test (63.47) score average. The standard deviation for the pre-test and post-test is 14.513. Eventually, the standard error mean for the pre-test and post-test is 2.073. The average learning outcome in the pre-test (53.47) is less than that of the post-test (63.47), and the p-value is 0.000, which is less than 0.05. Conclusion: The study’s results indicated that prevention education had a significant impact on increasing adolescents’ knowledge about smoking (p = 0.000). Regular prevention programs could further enhance adolescents’ understanding of the topic.

Abstract

Abstract

Intellectual disability (ID) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that requires early and accurate diagnosis. This study aims to improve the efficiency of ID diagnosis using a machine learning approach. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) model optimized with Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO) was developed and trained using data from questionnaires completed by 101 families/guardians of ID patients at RSUD Dr. Soetomo Surabaya. The features used include family history, cognitive abilities, and adaptive behaviors. The results showed that the GWO-SVM model achieved an accuracy of 95% in classifying ID patients, an improvement of 5% compared to the conventional SVM. The GWO algorithm successfully optimized the parameters in SVM, resulting in a model with the best performance. These findings indicate the potential of GWO-SVM as an effective and efficient tool for assisting in the diagnosis of ID.

Abstract

Adolescents are an age group vulnerable to emotional pressure that can affect eating patterns, one of which is emotional eating—eating behavior in response to negative emotions. In semi-urban areas like Lamongan, this phenomenon has begun to emerge, but there has been limited education or screening related to it. The initiative aims to enhance adolescents' understanding of emotional eating, its causes and impacts, and to equip them with adaptive emotion regulation strategies through counseling and screening activities. Screening was conducted on 870 grade 10–11 students at SMAN 1 Lamongan using the EADESS questionnaire to assess the likelihood of emotional eating behavior. A total of 865 questionnaires were valid for analysis. The results showed that 100% of respondents experienced emotional eating at varying levels of severity: 83.35% mild, 13.53% moderate, 1.85% severe, and 1.27% very severe. Emotional eating was more prevalent among students who were overweight or obese. Emotional eating is a significant issue among high school adolescents. Counseling and screening have proven to be an important initial step in raising students’ awareness and understanding of the connection between emotions and eating behavior. Further education and accessible mental health services within schools are needed.
