Abstract

Plastic plays an important role in everyday life, especially as food and beverage packaging. However, uncontrolled use of plastic causes environmental problems, with plastic waste in Indonesia reaching 64 million tons per year. This study aims to utilize plastic bottle waste as a material for making 3D filaments, which can reduce the amount of plastic waste and support recycling. Data collection involves identifying problems, determining machine components following the stages in the VDI 2222 method. From the results of the experiment in determining the optimal size of cutting plastic bottles, namely a width of 9 mm and a thickness of 0.37 mm. Before making filaments, plastic bottles must be cleaned and heated to remove motifs that can affect the quality of the filament.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of machine temperature on the process of making 3D printing filament from recycled plastic water bottles on filament quality, focusing on tensile testing as the main mechanical parameter. The filament produced from recycled PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) plastic bottles is used in 3D printing, representing an approach to reduce plastic waste. The filament-making machine's temperature is considered a significant variable that can influence the mechanical properties of the produced filament, including tensile strength. In this study, the Taguchi L4 method was employed, resulting in 12 test specimens with varying machine temperatures (210°C and 220°C), pulling speed (18 RPM and 24 RPM), nozzle temperature (260°C), bed temperature (90°C), print speed (50%), and infill density (107.1%). The results showed that the optimum outcome was achieved in the third experiment, with a combination of 220°C machine temperature and 18 RPM pulling speed, with an average tensile strength of 59.6 MPa. This study contributes to optimizing the process parameters for making 3D printing filaments from plastic water bottles.

Abstract

Additive manufacturing, particularly 3D printing, has emerged as a transformative technology in digital fabrication, enabling the rapid, accurate, and cost-effective production of complex components. Among the various 3D printing methods, Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) is one of the most prevalent techniques, employing thermoplastic filaments as its primary material source. This research aims to determine the optimal process parameters to achieve the highest tensile strength in components fabricated using food-grade Polylactic Acid (PLA) filament. To accomplish this, the Taguchi method was implemented as a robust design tool to optimize the manufacturing process, improve material performance, and reduce both cost and resource consumption. The experimental design followed the L27 Orthogonal Array, and the analysis was conducted using the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) to identify the most significant parameter combinations affecting tensile strength outcomes. The investigated process parameters included extruder temperature, build plate temperature, layer thickness, infill pattern, and deposition speed. Based on the results, the optimal conditions for maximizing tensile strength were identified as follows: extruder temperature of 190 °C, build plate temperature of 60 °C, layer thickness of 0.2 mm, triangle infill pattern, and deposition speed of 60 mm/s. Additionally, the parameters with the greatest influence on tensile strength, ranked from most to least impactful, were: build plate temperature, layer thickness, infill pattern, deposition speed, and extruder temperature.

Abstract

Indonesia, as the world’s largest archipelagic nation, requires efficient and reliable marine propulsion systems to support sustainable transportation. The waterjet thruster has emerged as an alternative to conventional propellers due to its advantages in maneuverability, cavitation resistance, and operational efficiency. With the advancement of additive manufacturing, particularly 3D printing, opportunities have arisen to fabricate propulsion components using innovative materials such as Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU), which combines flexibility and durability. This study presents the design, fabrication, and experimental testing of a twin waterjet thruster produced with TPU material through the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method. Performance tests were conducted using a 22 HP combustion engine at 4,100 rpm. The experimental results indicate that the thrust generated ranged between 10.8–12 kg (equivalent to 105.94–117.72 N) with an average thrust of 11.36 kg (111.24 N). These outcomes demonstrate that the system delivers consistent performance with minimal variation between trials. The findings confirm the feasibility of TPU-based twin waterjet thrusters for small to medium-scale marine applications and provide a basis for further development toward environmentally friendly propulsion systems through design optimization and the integration of electric motors.

Abstract

The rapid development of manufacturing technology is marked by the emergence of Additive Manufacturing (AM) or 3D Printing technology. This study aims to analyze the effect of layer height and printing speed on the mechanical strength of PETG material using the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) method. The printing process was carried out using an Ender 3 Pro 3D printer with process parameter variations of layer height (0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 mm) and printing speed (40, 50, and 60 mm/s) arranged according to the Taguchi L9 (3²) experimental design. eSUN PETG filament was selected due to its compatibility with the test requirements. The test specimens were fabricated according to the ASTM E23 standard with dimensions of 55 × 10 × 10 mm for impact strength testing. The results show that printing speed has a more significant influence on mechanical strength compared to layer height. The Taguchi analysis indicates that layer height contributes the most to the mechanical performance, followed by printing speed. The optimal combination was obtained at a layer height of 0.2 mm and a printing speed of 40 mm/s. Overall, the study highlights the critical role of process parameter optimization in improving the mechanical strength of 3D printed PETG thermoplastic materials.
