Abstract

Bukit Merdeka Village has great potential for the development of pineapple commodities; however, the utilization of pineapple peel waste remains suboptimal and is often regarded as mere waste. The management of food waste has become a critical issue due to its negative impact on health and the environment, where food waste is often discarded without further utilization. The objective of this community service activity is to educate the public about the dangers and potential benefits of food waste, with the hope of reducing waste, increasing economic welfare through innovation, and encouraging the people of Bukit Merdeka Village to better understand and optimize the use of food waste creatively and productively. This activity was conducted through lectures and interactive discussions involving all members of the PKK in Bukit Merdeka Village. Participants were also asked to take pre-tests and post-tests to measure their understanding before and after the education. There was a significant increase in the post-test results compared to the pre-test, with the average score of participants rising from 56.0 ± 3.2 to 84.6 ± 1.7. These results indicate that the education provided successfully improved participants' understanding of the dangers of food waste and how to utilize it. This educational activity successfully raised awareness and improved community skills in managing food waste, as well as opened economic opportunities through the utilization of pineapple peel waste.

Abstract

Hypertension is one of the health problems whose prevalence continues to increase in society, especially among the productive age. This study aims to determine the risk factors for hypertension in the productive age community in the work area of the North Sangatta Health Center. The research method used in this study is obsevively analytical with a case control design. Data were obtained from demographic data questionnaires and observation sheets for blood pressure calculations with a sample of 138 people. The variables analyzed included demographic factors (age, gender, education, occupation, ethnicity), lifestyle (smoking), and medical factors (family history of hypertension and diabetes). The results of the analysis showed that there was a significant relationship between age (P = < 0.05), occupation (P = >0.008), diabetes mellitus (P<0.001), hereditary history of hypertension (P>0.009) and the incidence of hypertension, while sex (P = >0.85), education (P>0.069), ethnicity (P>0.067), and smoking habits (P>0.170) did not have a significant relationship with the incidence of hypertension in the productive age community. It is proven that age, occupation, diabetes mellitus, and a history of hypertension are risk factors for the increase in hypertension cases in the work area of the North Sangatta Health Center.

Abstract

Background: Mental disorders affect approximately 20% of Indonesia’s population, with East Kalimantan reporting 2,679 cases, including 130 in the Sangatta Utara area. Despite the growing awareness of the critical role families play in supporting individuals with mental disorders, there is a still lack of studies that specifically explore family responses, particularly in Indonesia. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the factors that are associated with family responses to individuals living with severe mental disorders in Sangatta Utara, East Kalimantan. Methods: This observational and cross-sectional study targeted 130 families of individuals diagnosed with severe mental disorders. Data were collected using structured questionnaires. Statistical analysis was performed using chi-square tests and binary logistic regression. This statistical model aimed to identify the factors most influential on family responses. Results: Significant associations were found between family burden, social support, and family responses to individuals with severe mental disorders. The analysis revealed that family burden was strongly associated with positive family responses (Exp(B) = 24.22, p = 0.002), indicating that higher caregiving burden significantly increased the likelihood of positive family responses. Similarly, social support showed a significant positive association with family responses (Exp(B) = 5.19, p = 0.040).Conclusion: Family burden and social support are important factors that influence family responses to severe mental disorders. This study emphasizes and suggests the importance of targeted family counseling and community-based support programs in North Sangatta.

Abstract

Mumps is an infectious disease caused by a viral infection, often attacking the salivary glands, especially the parotid glands. This disease is self-limiting and common in elementary school children. This study aims to describe the prevalence, symptoms, and impact of mumps in students of SD Negeri 010 Makroman, Samarinda, as well as evaluate risk factors and relevant prevention efforts. With a descriptive research design, data was obtained from a population of 307 students through secondary data from the Makroman Health Center and direct on-site investigations. An attack rate of 3.58% indicates a limited impact on at-risk populations, but it is important to be aware of the potential for further transmission in the school environment. This study emphasizes the importance of preventive efforts, promotive measures, and continuous supervision These results provide insight for health policymakers to improve measures to prevent and control mumps in the school environment.

Abstract

Parotitis is a disease caused by mumps virus infection. The infection attacks the parotid glands, causing symptoms such as fever, swelling on the side of the face accompanied by pain. Data from the Samarinda City Health Office shows that there were 380 cases of mumps from September to early October 2024. The increase in cases also occurred among elementary school children, but there is no definitive data yet that illustrates the number and distribution of parotitis cases. The aim of this study is to identify the risk factors for mumps in elementary school children in the Loa Bakung working area. This study is a descriptive study. The sample was 5154 students. Data collection was done by distributing questionnaires online in the form of Google Forms and interviews to teachers during field visits. The number of schools that filled out the Google form was 11 schools (91.7%), and the number of classes that filled out the Google form was 55 classes (31.9%). Analysis was conducted on the incidence data of cases, patient characteristics, and school intervention efforts. The study showed the incidence of mumps cases among 238 students, with the highest number at SD Muhammadiyah 5 (37.82%) and the highest attack rate at MI Tijanul Jawahir (13.89%). The majority of the patients were 9 years old (27.94%) and male (53.36%). The main symptoms experienced are swelling in the cheeks (85.5%) and fever (67.3%). The preventive measures taken by the school include the use of masks, provision of handwashing facilities, and granting dispensations. The incidence of mumps cases shows a significant increase in the elementary school environment. Further investigation is needed regarding the factors influencing the high attack rate and prevention strategies. Keywords : Parotitis, attack rate, elementary school, prevention, Samarinda

Abstract

Background : Umrah pilgrimage involves large gatherings of people from around the world, posing a high risk of disease transmission, especially meningococcal meningitis. Therefore, meningitis vaccination is mandatory as an absolute requirement for departure to prevent outbreaks. Although vaccination is mandatory, challenges related to the timeliness and compliance of vaccination at Port Health Offices (KKP) remain a crucial issue in Indonesia. This narrative review aims to synthesize and describe the meningitis vaccination compliance among Umrah pilgrims in Indonesia Objective : summarize, analyze, and interpret research results related to meningitis vaccination compliance among Umrah pilgrims Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This review uses a narrative review method by analyzing 14 journal articles obtained from accredited journals from 2020 to 2025. The criteria for these articles are articles with independent variables focusing on factors related to vaccination compliance with vaccination compliance outcomes, articles with analytical observational designs. Selected articles were analyzed descriptively and narratively Results : results of the analysis show that the factors of knowledge and attitude of pilgrims are related to punctuality and vaccination compliance. In addition, support from the Umrah Travel Organizer (PPIU) or travel agent is also a predictor of compliance Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Compliance with meningitis vaccination among Umrah pilgrims is influenced by internal factors (knowledge and attitude) and external factors (travel support and PPIU support). The main recommendations are to strengthen education focused on the timing of vaccine administration and to improve effective coordination/socialization between KKP and PPIU to bridge the policy implementation gap

Abstract

Background : : Anemia in pregnancy remains a critical global health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries where nutritional deficiencies and limited access to health services persist. Iron deficiency is the leading cause, mainly due to inadequate dietary intake and poor adherence to iron supplementation. Objective : This review aimed to analyze the relationship between dietary iron intake, supplement adherence, and anemia prevalence among pregnant women. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : A narrative literature review was conducted using databases including PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Google Scholar, and DOAJ. Articles published from 2020 to 2025 were identified using keywords such as “anemia in pregnancy”, “iron deficiency”, “iron supplementation”, and “adherence”. Inclusion criteria comprised peer-reviewed studies involving pregnant women and examining dietary iron intake or supplement adherence in relation to anemia. Results : Findings indicate that low consumption of iron-rich foods and poor adherence to supplementation are major determinants of anemia. Barriers include gastrointestinal side effects, cultural food taboos, limited awareness, and lack of counseling. Education, family support, and healthcare engagement significantly enhance adherence and hemoglobin outcomes. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Combining nutrition education with consistent supplementation effectively reduces anemia prevalence. Integrated, community-based strategies are essential to improving maternal iron status and pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract

Background : The World Health Organization reported that global coverage of antiretroviral therapy (ART) reached 77% in 2024; however, mortality among people living with HIV remains relatively high. Various clinical, immunological, and social factors influence treatment success and patient survival outcomes. Objective : This study aims to narratively analyze the factors associated with mortality among HIV patients receiving ART. Research Methods/ Implementation Methods : This narrative review identified relevant literature published between January 2020 and June 2025 through four electronic databases: PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect. The search used combinations of keywords and Boolean operators (“AND,” “OR”): “HIV” OR “Human Immunodeficiency Virus” AND “mortality” OR “death” AND “antiretroviral therapy” OR “ART” AND “survival analysis” OR “Cox regression” OR “Kaplan–Meier” AND “cohort study.” Only peer-reviewed, full-text articles in English were included. Eligible studies employed prospective or retrospective cohort designs, involved adult HIV patients receiving ART, and reported mortality outcomes analyzed using Kaplan–Meier or Cox proportional hazards models. Review articles, case reports, and studies without relevant survival or mortality data were excluded. A total of 12 studies met the inclusion criteria, primarily conducted in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Results : Mortality rates ranged from 4.2 to 11.7 per 100 person-years, with a 5-year survival rate of 81.7–88.5%. Approximately 60–70% of deaths occurred within the first year of therapy. The most consistent mortality risk factors included CD4 count <200 cells/μL (AHR 2.3–6.6), severe anemia or hemoglobin <10 g/dL (AHR 2.2–5.2), WHO clinical stage III/IV (AHR 4.3–15.0), poor functional status (bedridden/ambulatory) (AHR 3.0–9.5), tuberculosis co-infection (AHR 1.9–4.1), and poor ART adherence (AHR 3.3–9.6). Sociodemographic factors such as being unmarried, low education, and poverty also increased mortality risk (AHR 1.6–3.7). Conversely, good ART adherence, cotrimoxazole prophylaxis (CPT) use, adequate nutritional status (BMI ≥18.5 kg/m²), and CD4 ≥200 cells/μL were significant protective factors. Conclusion/Lesson Learned : Mortality among adult HIV patients in developing countries remains high, particularly within the first year of ART and among individuals with low immunity, anemia, or tuberculosis co-infection. Strengthening anemia and TB screening, optimizing ART adherence, and early identification of patients with low CD4 counts should be prioritized to reduce mortality rates.
