Abstract

The objective of the study was to explore the appropriate cutting age to produce optimal biomass and good nutrient quality from sorghum mutant lines BMR i.e., PATIR 3.5 M7, PATIR 3.6 M7, and PATIR 3.7 M7, also SAMURAI I (M17). A completely randomized in Split Plot design with 2 factors and 3 replicates was used. The first factor was the type of sorghum (SAMURAI I M17, PATIR 3.5, PATIR 3.6, PATIR 3.7) as the main plot and the second factor was the cutting age (85, 95, 105) as a subplot. Parameters observed were the production of stems, leaves, grains, total biomass production, ash, crude fat, crude fiber, crude protein, NFE, TDN, percentage of DMD, OMD and N-NH3. Data were analyzed by using ANOVA followed by DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test). The results showed that there were highly significant interactions (P<0.01) between cutting age and type of sorghum in production of stems, leaves, grains, total biomass production, value of TDN, DMD, OMD, and N-NH3. Increasing cutting age significantly increased the percentage of ash content, crude protein and crude fat. The sorghum type significantly affected crude fat content nonBMR sorghum variety of SAMURAI I (M17) and achieved optimal biomass production and nutrient content at cutting age of 85 d similar to BMR sorghum mutant lines PATIR 3.6 and PATIR 3.5, whereas BMR sorghum mutant lines of PATIR 3.7 achieved optimum production at the age of 95 d of cutting. All types of sorghum varieties was not recommended to be harvested at 105 d. Biomass production increased with the increasing of cutting age, but the nutrient content decreased.Key words: cutting age, mutant, sorghum

Abstract

This study aimed to compare local dairy farmer ration formula with national research council in producing higher feed efficiency and milk production. This study had two stages. The first stage was in vitro study of dairy farmer rations which have different raw materials (R3, R4, and R5) with NRC based ration (R2) and Demo Farm ration (R1). The variables measured in this stage were proximate composition, volatile fatty acid, ammonia, dry matter and organic matter digestibility. The first stage used a randomized block design with five treatments, three groups of ruminal fluid, and three replications. The second stage used nine lactating cows with three periods of lactation (one, three, and other) and used a randomized block design with three treatments, three groups, and one replication. Parameters measured were dry matter intake, manure score, milk production, body weight gain, body condition score, and technical and economical efficiencies. The first stage result showed that R1, R2, and R3 were three best rations in nutrient composition and fermentability (ammonia and volatile fatty acid concentrations were optimum for microbial growth and high digestibility), so in conclusion those three rations were the best rations and should be compared by in vivo method. The result of the second stage showed that all tested rations were not significantly different in milk production, performance and efficiency, so in conclusion those three rations have the same quality.Key words: dairy cattle, milk production, profitability, rations test

Abstract

This study aimed to identify patterns of feed provision and evaluate the nutritional adequacy of crossbred goats (EC) in Totallang, Lasusua District of North Kolaka. The method used was descriptive analysis to describe the general state of research sites, feeding system and adequacy of nutrien by EC goats. The result revealed that livestock rearing is generally performed by breeders at the age of 1556 years (productive age group) of 81.25 and the remaining 18.75 in those aged >56 years. The experience of breeder ranges from 15 years (68.75) and >6 years (31.25). The type of feed used by farmers in the village of Totallang include: Gliricidia sp., Pennisetum purpureum, Erytrina subumbrans (Hassk.), and Ficus variegata Blume. Gliricidia sp. was dominant forage fed to animals (95.98) and other forage were fed in limited portion such as: pennisetum purpureum (1.79), Erytrina subumbrans (Hassk.) (1.34%) and Ficus variegata Blume (0.89). Gliricidia sp. contributed protein in ration up to 16.82. About 56.25 of farmer fed animal with 100 Gliricidia sp., while 18.75 of farmer used Gliricidia sp. in combination with Erytrina subumbrans (Hassk.) and 12.5 of them fed EC goats with combination of Gliricidia sp. and Erytrina subumbrans (Hassk.) or and Ficus variegata Blume. About 62.5 farmer in Totallang fed their goat with sufficient dry matter intake according to Kearl (1982), as well as 100 of goat were sufficient in crude protein intake meanwhile TDN intake were not fulfilled by farmer about 93.75.

Abstract

The objective of the experiment was to find out the forage production from mix culture of mycorrhizal signal grass (B. decumbens) and puero (P. phaseoloides) which amended with liquid compost.  Experiment was done in wood box 1.5 m x 1.5 m x 30 cm that filled with soil from location of experiment that was at Sangatta at PT Kaltim Prima Coal (KPC) site of East Kutai Regency. Experiment was arranged by Randomized Block Design with factorial.  The first factor was mix culture of signal-puero with ratio 40% signal + 60% puero (c1), 50% signal + 50% puero (c2), and 60% signal + 40% puero, and the second factor was combination of AMF-liquid compost, those were non AMF + non liquid compost (d1), AMF + non liquid compost (d2), non AMF + liquid compost (d3), and AMF + liquid compost (d4).  AMF was inoculated by seed coating technique.   Result of this experiment showed that mix culture of signal-puero affect significantly different on forage dry matter production, forage P production, spore density of signal rhizosphere (P < 0.01), CP of forage production, and spore density of puero rhizosphere (P < 0.05), but not significantly different (P > 0.05) on signal and puero CP content, signal and puero CF content, signal and puero P content, forage CF production, signal and puero AMF colonization.  Whereas, combination of AMF-liquid compost gave effect to forage dry matter production, signal CP content, puero CF content, puero P content, forage CP production (P < 0.05), and signal and puero AMF colonization (P < 0.01).  There was not interaction between mix culture of signal-puero and combination of AMF-liquid compost.  Generally, highest quantity and quality of forage production was achieved on mix culture of 40 % signal and 60 % puero, meanwhile combination of AMF-liquid compost was obtained on treatment AMF+liquid compost.  Mix culture of 40 % signal and 60 % puero may be accepted as pasture on grazing land.

Abstract

One of the livestock products that play an important role in improving food security in Indonesia is beef. Increased income, changes in consumption patterns, and population growth and increased public knowledge about nutrition affect the need for the number of cattle being slaughtered as one of the producers of meat protein in Indonesia. The purpose of this research was to determine the production capacity and consumption of beef in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT). This research was conducted in NTT for 6 (six) months, starting from June to November 2019. This study of beef consumption is included in the case study classification. The type of data used in this study are primary and secondary data obtained from sources related to this study. Analysis of the data obtained was carried out descriptively, namely analysis carried out by way of explanation, writing, and statements that could be in the form of words (qualitative) and numbers (quantitative). Data analysis was conducted to determine the production capacity of beef cattle, beef production, and consumption of beef. The results of this study indicate that Slaughter cattle for the adequacy of consumption and domestic needs in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur is still fulfilled for the community and in accordance with government recommendations (legislation), namely, cattle slaughtering is still below 10% of the total population of existing cattle (1,041,023 tails). Factors affecting the adequacy of domestic consumption and demand for beef in NTT, namely: (1) low purchasing power so that beef consumption is also low; (2) the community is not yet aware of the importance of animal protein (nutrition) needs for family consumption so that the level of beef consumption reaches 12% of the total protein requirement for each person; and (3) animal protein substitutions from other livestock which are cheaper affect people's thinking patterns in consuming beef.

Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the productivity, competition indices and nutrient content of Brachiaria decumbens (grass), Centrosema pubescens and Clitoria ternatea (legumes) as sole and mixed cropping system in peatland in Pekanbaru, Indonesia from October 2011 to November 2012. The experiment was set up in randomized complete block design with five treatments and three blocks as replication. Five treatments compared: B. decumbens sole cropping (Bd), C. pubescens sole cropping (Cp), C. ternatea sole cropping (Ct), B..decumbens and C. pubescens mixed cropping (Bd+Cp) and B. decumbens and C..ternatea mixed cropping (Bd+Ct). The dry matter (DM) yield of B. decumbens was significantly (P<0.05) increased by mixed cropping. B. decumbens DM yield in C. pubescens intercrop increased by 147.9% and in C. ternatea intercrop increased by 74.1% compare to sole B. decumbens. Land equivalent ratio (LER) value range from 1.04 (Bd+Ct) to 1.58 (Bd+Cp). The crowding coefficient (K) value of B. decumbens in both mixed croping system was higher than K value of C. pubescens and C. ternatea. The total K value for Bd+Cp was higher than Bd+Ct. The competition ratio (CR) value of B. decumbens mixed cropping with C. pubescens and C. ternatea were.>1. The aggressivity (A) value of B. decumbens in both mixed cropping was positive. The crude protein (CP) content of B.decumbens did not significantly (P>0.05) increased by mixed cropping with legumes. Intercropping with B. decumbens significantly (P<0.05) decreased CP content of C. ternatea. Meanwhile neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) content of B. decumbens did not decrease by intercropping with C.pubescens and C. ternatea. In conclusion, mixed cropping with C. pubescens and C. ternatea in peatland increased DM yield of B. decumbens. Mixed cropping with B. decumbens did not influence DM yield of C. pubescens and decreased DM yield and CP content of C..ternatea. Mixed cropping of B. decumbens with C. pubescens and B. decumbens with C..ternatea in peatland did not increase total DM yield of forage per unit area of land and nutrition contents of forage. B. decumbens was more competitive and dominant than C..pubescens and C. ternatea in peatland.

Abstract

The low rainfall and high temperature greatly affect the decline in production and quality of forage in general. The experiment was arranged in a completely randomized design with two factors and four replications. The first factor consisted of 3 level of drought stress namely: 100% field capacity (FC) (control), 50% FC, and 25% FC. The second factor comprised of 3 defoliation interval i.e. interval defoliations of 60, 90 and 120 days. The observed variables were nutrient content (crude protein (CP), crude fibre (CF), Gross energy, lignin, selulose, neutral/acid detergent fibre (NDF/ADF), in vitro dry matter and organic matter digestibility (IVMD/IVOMD), Ash, Ca and P) and anti-nutrient content (Tannin and Saponin). Data were analyzed by ANOVA and the differences between treatments were tested by LSD. The results shows that there were interactions (P<0.05) between drought stress and defoliations interval on CP, CF, energy, cellulose, lignine, NDF/ADF, IVMD and IVOMD, but not to ash, Ca, P, saponin and tannin content. Drought treatment significantly (P<0.05) decreased CP, energy, IVMD and IVOMD, but CF, lignin, cellulose, ND/ADF, IVDMD/IVOMD, saponin and tannin increases. Defoliation interval significantly (P<0.05) decreases on CP, CF, energy, lignin, cellulose, NDF/ADF, and IVDMD/IVOMD, but saponin and tannin content did not affected.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to determine the potential of Indigofera sp shoot leaf meal to substitute soybean meal in poultry diet. One hundred and sixty laying hens of Isa Brown strain, at 30 weeks old were used in this study and kept in individual cages. A Randomized Completely Design was applied with four treatments and four replications. The treatments were four levels of soybean meal protein substitution by Indigofera sp shoot meal protein in the diets: The level were 0% (R0), 15% (R1), 30% (R2) and 45% (R3). Eggs were collected daily and were evaluated on: weight, shell, albumen, yolk, intensity of yolk and haugh unit. Results showed that the nutrients content of Indigofera sp shoot leaf meal were crude protein 28.98%, crude fat 3.30%, crude fiber 8.49%, calcium 0.52% and phosphorus content was 0.34%. Indigofera sp shoot leaf meal contained a complete amino acids. The vitamin A and ß-carotene were high, i.e 3828.79 IU/100g and 507.6 mg/kg, respectively. It is concluded that Indigofera sp shoot leaf meal is potential to be used as an alternative source of protein. Substitute 45% soybean meal protein with Indigofera sp shoot leaf meal in laying hen diets increase egg quality and increase intensity of yolk colour to 55.88%.

Abstract

Murdannia bracteata is one of potential forages for ruminant that has not been studied yet. This forage contents high mineral and it can be as fungtional feed. The aim of this study was to evaluate the growth and productivity, chlorophyll and minerals content of Murdannia bracteata caused by magnesium foliar application. The experiment was arranged in randomized complete design with five treatments and 4 replications. The application of magnesium level was arranged into: 0 ppm, 2000 ppm, 4000 ppm, 8000 ppm, and 12000 ppm. The study was conducted in a greenhouse, field laboratory of Agrostology, Faculty of Animal Science, Bogor Agricultural University. The result showed that growth, productivity, and chlorophyll content were not significantly (P>0.05) affected by increasing magnesium level. Increasing magnesium dossage resulted in decreasing calsium, potassium, and zink content (P<0,05), but not on phosphor and sodium (P>0,05). In conclusion, increasing magnesium dossage up to 12000 ppm did not significantly affect growth, productivity, and chlorophyll content. However, increasing magnesium level decreased calsium, potassium, and zink content.

Abstract

The free-range system is a currentmodel of chicken production according to the concept of Animal Welfare. This article aims to discuss how the free-range system was implemented and its effect on health, performance and quality product as well as free-range development strategies as an alternative to chicken production systems. The free-range system must have access to outdoor to express their natural behavior. Based on regulation, the density of chickens in outdoor is a maximum of 10,000 birds/ha. Chickens reared using the free-range system show better welfare indicators, as evidenced by the Heterophil/Lymphocyte (H/L) value and the frequency of their natural behavior. Chicken eggs from the free-range system contain higher levels of protein and carotenoid. It also contains omega-3 & 6, DHA, vitamins A and E and have lower cholesterol level. Chicken meat from the free-range system contains higher protein and lower fat levels. However, the performance of chicken production using free-range system was still not consistent and was greatly influenced by the type of forage in the pasture. The introduction of grazing land with superior forage such as Indigofera zollingeriana and choosing kampung or local type of chickens may become development strategies of chicken production in the free range system.
