Abstract

Cover crop diversity under plantation area has potency to supply forage for animal farming. The research aim was to evaluate cover crop vegetation and to estimate plant production and quality under plantation at West Java. This research was conducted from May 2018 to April 2019 at public and private company around Bogor, Banten, Kuningan and Garut. In each area, there were selected 10 plots for plant identification with sample size was 50 cm x 50 cm. Biomass production and nutrient quality was sampled through 3 plots with sample size was 100 cm x 100 cm, forage was harvested and weighed then analyzed by proximate analysis. Diversity and biomass production were analyzed by R 3.6.2 software through Analysis of Variance(ANOVA) based on environment differences, then the significant results analyzed by LSD Test. The results showed that the highest biomass was sampled in Bogor i.e. 359 g m‑2 ±164.08 g m‑2 fresh weight and 71.22 g m‑2 ±45.91 g m-2 dry weight. Cover crop diversity varied around two to 32 species with percentage of area cover around 10-90%. Potential plants as forage were Panicum repens (lempuyangan), Paspalum conjugatum (jukut pahit) and Asystasia gangetica (ara sungsang). Dry matter content of composite forage was 18.3%-31.6%, crude protein was 4.57%-10.8%, crude fiber was 21.3%-25.7% and ashreached 11.2%-15.9%. It can be concluded that cover crop under plantation have potency to supply forage, especially in Bogor, however concentrate addition is needed to fulfil nutrient animal requirement due to the low quality forage. Abstract

Study on the data of forage quality was conducted to determine the quality of napier grass forage with different growth and morfological type. In Indonesia, there are two types of napier grass, namely the tall and short type. The data used in this study were of proximate and van soest analysis of tall-type napier grass forage Pennisetum purpureum Schum and short-type napier grass, cultivar Mott dwarf, which were obtained from the Bekasi Feed Quality and Certification Center and data obtained from journals. The results of the study showed that dry matter content of short-type napier grass was higher than those of tall-type napier grass (23% vs 20%), while fiber fractions such as crude fiber, NDF and ADF of short-type napier grass were lower than those of tall-type napier grass 32% vs 29%, 70% vs 65%, 43% vs 39%, respectively. It is therefore relative forage quality (RFQ) of short-type napier grass was higher than those of tall-type napier grass (68 vs 57). It is concluded that related to dry matter and fiber fraction value, the quality of short-type napier grass (cv. Mott) is better than those of tall-type napier grass. Key words: cultivar Mott, Pennisetum purpureum, relative forage quality (RFQ), short-type napier grass, tall-type napier grass

Abstract

This experiment was conducted to evaluate the mineral contents of I. zollingeriana growing with different planting densities. The experiment was conducted in a randomized block design with three different planting densities (8,000 plants per ha, 13,333 plants per ha, and 20,000 plants per ha) and 3 replication. Plant biomass was analyzed for macro and micro mineral contents as well as Ca:P ratio. The results showed that increased planting densities significantly increased (p<0.05) P, Cu, and Cr contents, but decreased Ca and Na contents had no significant effect on Mg, K, Mn, Zn and Fe contents. Furthermore, the increased planting densities significantly decreased (p<0.05) uptakes of Ca, K, Mn, and Fe by the plants, but increased (p<0.05) the uptakes of Cu and Cr. Meanwhile, the uptakes of P, K, Na, and Zn were not affected by planting densities. Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the planting density of I. zollingeriana should be maintained in 8,000 plants ha-1 to maintain the content and uptake of mineral in forage crops. Abstract

Forage  compact  feed  has  the  ability  to  cut  the  adaptation  period  of  grazing cattle when transported, because they are used to consume forage. The effect of the form and  type  of  forage  formulation  on  the  feeding  behavior  of  cattle  needs  to  be  studied further to determine the preferences of cattle for this compact feed. This study used 36 cattle  with  3  replications  in  each  treatment.  The  2  factor  groups  withfactorial  design consisting  formulation  and  form  of  feed  was  applied  in  this  study.  The  forms  of  feed used in this study were wafers, pellets, dried pellets, and cubes. The formulations used in  this  study  were  formulation  1  (10%  molasses,  30%  indigofera  leaves,  50%  straw, 10% elephant grass); formulation 2 (10% molasses, 30% indigofera leaves, 60% straw); formulation  3  (10%  molasses,  20%  indigofera  leaves,  65%  straw,  5% hemp).  The parameters observed in this study were eating behavior of cattle which consisted of the frequency and duration of eating, drinking, rumination, and resting. The results showed that there wasan interaction on eating frequency and cattle duration. Formulation 3 on wafer  treatment  had  the  highest  feeding  frequency  (P<0.05).  Formulation  1  on  wafer treatment   had   the   highest   duration   of   rumination   (P<0.05).   In   the   conclusion, Formulation 1 and 3 with wafer shape showed the best behavior for eating.

Abstract

Compacted feed such as wafers and pellets is still rarely given to cattle shipping in Indonesia because it requires an adaptation period to the newly introduced feed. This study aimed to observe forage compacted feed potency to minimize the adaptation period of kupang cattle to a new feed with high nutrient content. Two experiments were carried out to observe six feed formulations and four different feed forms. The first experiment was an experiment to determine three of six formulations with the same nutritional content to be tested in the second experiment. The second experiment was to observe four feed forms (wafers, pellets, dry pellets, and cubes) combined with the three best formulations from the first experiment. Six treatments and five replications using 30 cattle and 30 kg of feed were carried out in the first study, while the second one used a randomized factorial design of 4´3 treatments and 5 replications consisting of 60 cattle and 420 kg of feed. The results showed that there was no significant difference between the formulations at the same nutritional level. The highest consumption results were found in the form of wafer followed by cubes, pellets, and dry pellets (P <5%). The conclusion of this study is that the compacted feed in the form of wafers, pellets, and cubes can be used to eliminate the feed adaptation period. Abstract

Proses penanganan dan perubahan mikroklimat yang dialami oleh DOC (Day Old Chick) selama proses transportasi mempengaruhi performa DOC.
