Abstract

One alternative to improve feed quality is to combine the main feed with forages which are more economical in cost but contain high protein sources, such as sorghum. Production estimation is essential because it will determine the sustainability of the feed. This study aimed to estimate the amount of sorghum production using support vector regression (SVR). Several stages of this research are collecting data, preprocessing, modelling, and evaluation. The dataset used and the input for this SVR algorithm model is field observation data. The kernels used in the SVR algorithm modelling are linear, Polynomial, and RBF. Sorghum production estimation using SVR has a performance evaluation value that refers to the root mean square error (RMSE). The result of this research is that the model obtained from the SVR algorithm can estimate sorghum production with performance evaluation values using R2, mean absolute error (MAE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and RMSE. The best results on the Polynomial kernel are R2=0.7841, MAE=0.0681, MAPE=0.46641, and RMSE=0.1006. This study shows that the classification model obtained from the SVR algorithm with Kernel Polynomial is the best model for estimating sorghum production.

Abstract

Integrated farming systems through inclusion of forage into the plantation area can increase forage supply for ruminants.  The aim of the research was to evaluate biomass production, nutrient, mineral content and digestibility of A. gangetica under different light intensity on palm plantation area. The research was conducted under randomized complete block design based on three different light intensity on each block.  Data were analyzed statistically with R i386 3.6.1 using Analysis of Variance Test (ANOVA), and Duncan Test was applied to determine the level of significant difference.  The research showed A. gangetica cultivation influenced the soil properties under palm plantation.  A gangetica growth well until light intensity 14.39% that indicated by average biomass production on the first harvest time reached 78.58 g/plant.  The light intensity decreases triggered an increase of A. gangetica dry matter percentage, ash content and crude protein.   The light intensity unaffected the concentration of minerals Ca, P, Mg and forage digestibility, on the other side the dry matter digestibility on the second harvest time decreased due to the soil properties influences. The research concluded that biomass production, nutrient, mineral content and digestibility of A. gangetica under palm plantation area were affected by light intensity, soil properties and harvest time

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the physiological response of female beef cattle to peatland microclimate stress in Central Kalimantan. This study used direct observation on small holder beef cattle farm.  Microclimate data on 41 units cattle barns and physiological parameters of female cattle were collected in the morning, at noon and in the afternoon.  The physiological parameter measurements involved 215 female beef cattle, consisting of 119 Bali and 96 crossbred cattle with different physiological stages including pregnant cows, lactating cows, dry cows, heifers and calves. The microclimate condition within cattle barns on peatland of Central Kalimantan is not the comfort zone for beef cattle.  It is characterized by high air temperature and relative humidity, and low wind speed, which result in high temperature humidity index (THI).  The barn with gable roof type and asbestos materials gave the lowest THI.   This Microclimate caused heat stress to beef cattle reared on the peatlands, indicated by the high rectal temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and heat tolerance coefficient, although it was still categorized as mild to moderate stress. Bali cattle showed better physiological responses to microclimate stress than crossbred cattle.  Pregnant crossbred cows were the most susceptible to peatland microclimate stress.

Abstract

Abstract

One of the economic alternatives to improve the quality of ruminant feed is combining grass as the main feed with high-protein forages such as sorghum. To get a quality sorghum harvest during the period, it must be right when it has good biomass content, nutrients, and digestibility. The problem is that measuring quality in the laboratory has additional costs and time, which is not short, causing delays. An approach with machine learning using a convolutional neural network can be a better solution. This research uses a convolutional neural network algorithm with the right architecture to estimate sorghum harvest time from imaging results of unmanned aerial vehicles. The stages of this research include data collection, pre-processing, modeling, and finally, the evaluation stage. This research compares the results of several convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithm architectural models: simple CNN, ResNet50 V2, visual geometry group-16 (VGG-16), MobileNet V2, and Inception V3. The result is determining the CNN algorithm architectural model that can estimate sorghum harvest time with maximum accuracy. The best result is the simple CNN architectural model with an accuracy of 0.95. This research shows that the classification model obtained from the CNN algorithm with a simple CNN architecture is the choice model for estimating sorghum harvest time.

Abstract

The Pakchong-1 hybrid cultivar is a highly productive forage grass cross between elephant grass and pearl millet grass (Pennisetum purpureum x Pennisetum glaucum). The research objective was to determine the growth and production response of Pakchong-1 elephant grass to different fertilizer doses and cutting ages. The study was conducted at the JASTRU (Jonggol Animal Science Teaching and Research Unit) of IPB University. This study used a 3 x 3 factorial completely randomized design (3 doses of nitrogen fertilizer x 3 cutting ages) with 4 replications. The data was analysed using ANOVA and the Duncan Multiple Range Test. The fertilizer doses used were 100, 200, and 300 kg ha-1, and the cutting ages were 50, 60, and 70 days. The research results showed that the cutting age significantly increased plant height (180.53 – 210.90 cm), dry leaf weight (3.90 – 5.63 tons ha-1), dry stem weight (2.32 – 4.38 tons ha-1), and total dry weight (6.22 – 10.02 tons ha-1). However, biomass production was not affected. There was an interaction between the fertilizer dose and cutting age in terms of the number of tillers (1.99 – 5.15 tillers per clump) and the number of leaves (5.55 – 11.18 leaves per plant). Based on the research, the optimal point for obtaining the best results in terms of plant height growth, number of leaves, number of tillers, production of fresh biomass, dry weight of stems, dry weight of leaves, and total dry weight of Pakchong-1 elephant grass was a cutting edge of 60 days and the addition of 100 kg ha-1 of fertilizer. Key words: cutting age, fertilizer dosage, forage production, growth of pakchong

Abstract

ABSTRACT The purposes of this research were to evaluate the effectiveness of the forage planting program in achieving the objectives and to formulate a strategy for the development of the forage program. Primary data were obtained through direct observation in the field and filling out a list of questionnaires by the resource persons. The process of collecting data for the evaluation of the forage planting program was carried out in six provinces, i.e., the provinces of Lampung, Central Java, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, South Kalimantan and West Papua (purposive sampling). Data analysis was carried out through the analytical hierarchy process (AHP), which was a functional hierarchy, with the main input being human perception. The number of sources for the AHP method was 22 sources consisting of heads of the Directorate of Feed, agencies in charge of animal husbandry in provinces and districts, as well as farmers group. It could be concluded that that the actor that ranks first in the strategy for developing the forage planting program was the farmers group, followed by the district, provincial and central government. The most influencing factor in the strategy for developing a forage planting program was land, followed by climate, production inputs, regional commitment and forage cultivation. The strategy considered important in the development of forage planting programs was forage planting in the rainy season. The results of AHP analysis on the most influential actors and factors, farmers group and land, could be used as a reference for policy makers in developing strategies for developing forage planting programs. Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of sorghum-Indigofera forage-based feed on the pre-mating performance of Garut ewes. A total of 28 Garut ewes was divided into two groups of treatment so that each treatment consisted of 14 heads. The treatment of field grass (FG) as a control and the feed composition in the formula of 50% sorghum forage silage + 40% Indigofera hay + 10% rice bran (SI). The animals were distributed under a completely randomized design, and the data were analyzed using a t-test. The results showed that the dry matter intake (DMI) and nutrient digestibility values of FG were higher (p<0.05) than SI. However, the impact on body weight gain, blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and blood cholesterol level did not differ (p>0.05). The average pre-mating bodyweight of Garut ewes for all treatments was the same number relatively, were 35 kg/head. BUN and blood cholesterol levels in the FG and SI treatments were 36.18±3.47 vs 35.27±4.23, and 66.13±5.56 vs 69.25±3.95 mg/dl, respectively. It can be concluded that SI feed had higher efficiency values and better readiness for the reproductive phase. Therefore, SI feed can be used as a substitute for field grass for the reproductive stage of Garut ewes.
