Abstract

Rainfed rice fields are wetlands whose use is still not optimal, so proper management is needed so that they can be utilized for rice cultivation. In efforts to improve land productivity, the concept of a sustainable rice cropping system has been developed which takes into account environmental conditions known as the System of Rice Intensification (SRI). One of the serious limiting factors in the utilization of rainfed lowland rice fields is the problem of weeds. This study aims to determine the diversity of weeds in rainfed paddy fields planted with aromatic rice and fertilized with NPK fertilizer combined with rice straw compost. This study used a 2-factor randomized block design (RBD). The first factor was the dose of NPK fertilizer (A), namely: a0 = 0 kg ha-1 (control), a1 = 150 kg ha-1, and a2 = 300 kg ha-1, and the second factor is the dose of rice straw compost (K), namely: k1 = 5 t ha-1, k2 = 7.5 t ha-1, k3 = 10 t ha-1, k4 = 12.5 t ha-1, k5 = 15 t ha-1, and k6 = 20 t ha-1. The results showed that there were six types of weeds found in the aromatic rice planting area in rainfed lowland rice fields that were applied with NPK fertilizer and rice straw compost, namely Cyperus rotundus, Chloris radiata, Cyperus iria, Echinochloa colona, Ludwigia palustris, and Amaranthus spinosus. The weed that dominated rainfed lowland rice planted with aromatic rice with the application of NPK fertilizer and rice straw compost was Cyperus rotundus, with a summed dominance ratio (SDR) of 58–100% found in the a2k6 treatment (300 kg ha-1 NPK + 20 t ha-1 rice straw compost). The highest weed diversity index (H') value was found in the a0k1 treatment (0 kg ha-1 + 5 t ha-1 rice straw compost) at a 45 DAP of 1.10.

Abstract

The increasing popularity of equestrian activities today for sports, entertainment, recreation, hobbies, and lifestyles has had a positive impact with the emergence of several horse riding training areas and horse-breeding in South Kalimantan, especially in Banjarbaru City. The horse stables at the horse riding training areas will produce waste in the form of horse manure, both solid (feces) and liquid (urine). Poor waste management of horse manure will hurt the environment. This community service activity aims to provide an eco-friendly solution to the problem of a pile of horse manure in horse stables. Based on the discussions between the community service team and the owner of one of the horse farms in Banjarbaru City, Johnhaus Stable, a solution was provided in the form of training in making compost fertilizer made from horse manure. The training began with a presentation on compost making and was followed by practice in making compost from horse manure. Based on the results of the pre-test and post-test given to participants, there has been a significant increase in the interest and knowledge of the participants regarding compost fertilizer.

Abstract

Decline in physiological seed quality during storage can significantly reduce viability and vigor, including in Hiyung cayenne pepper, a superior local variety from South Kalimantan. One potential solution is the invigoration technique, which involves treating seeds with certain solutions to restore their quality. This study aimed to examine the effect of shallot extract as a natural invigoration agent and to determine the best concentration to improve the viability and vigor of Hiyung cayenne pepper seeds that have exceeded their storage period. The research was conducted at Seed Control and Certification Center for Food Crops and Horticulture (BPSBTPH) Banjarbaru from July to August 2024 using a completely randomized design with one factor: four solution concentrations (0%, 10%, 15%, 20%) and five replications. Observed parameters included maximum growth potential, germination rate, vigor index, uniformity, and growth rate. The results showed that shallot extract had a significant effect on germination rate and growth rate, but no significant effect on maximum growth potential, vigor index, and uniformity. Application of 10% shallot extract improved seed viability, while 20% concentration enhanced the vigor of Hiyung cayenne pepper seeds that had exceeded their storage period.

Abstract

Along with the times, edamame has good prospects for development. This prospect can be seen from the high demand for exports of around 100,000 t year-1. However, Indonesia is only able to fulfill about 3% of it. The lack of fulfillment of the export market for edamame is due to several constraints in its development. One of the obstacles is the availability of fertile land. Peatlands in South Kalimantan have problems with high soil acidity and low soil fertility. Using oyster mushroom baglog waste (OMBW) is an effort to increase peat soil fertility and edamame production. This study aims to determine the best dosage of OMBW compost for raising soil pH, growth, and yield of edamame on peat soils. This study was structured using a one-factor completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments, namely: 0 (b0), 5 (b1), 10 (b2), 15 (b3), and 20 t ha-1 OMBW  compost (b4). The results showed the best dose of 20 t ha-1 OMBW  compost (b4) increased plant height at 4 weeks after planting (WAP) by 45%, the number of leaves at 4 WAP by 60%, and the number of pods by 65%. In comparison, the dose of 10 t ha-1 OMBW  compost (b2) was best at increasing soil pH at 3 weeks after incubation by 20.24%, increasing plant stem diameter by 39%, and fresh pod weight by 78%.

Abstract

Danda Jaya Village is one of the primary oyster mushroom producing areas in Barito Kuala Regency, South Kalimantan Province, but until now, the baglog waste from these cultivation activities has not been optimally managed, potentially leading to environmental pollution. This Community Service (PKM) activity aims to increase the knowledge and skills of oyster mushroom cultivators in processing baglog waste into organic fertilizer. The implementation method involved preparation, execution—consisting of lectures and practical fertilizer-making sessions—and evaluation using questionnaires. The activity was attended by 24 participants who are members of the oyster mushroom cultivation group. The practical sessions utilized oyster mushroom baglog waste (50 kg) as the primary material, mixed with cow manure, bran, agricultural lime, EM4, and molasses. Evaluation results showed a significant increase in participant knowledge; while technical procedural knowledge ranged from 0‒18.75% before the activity, it surged to 80‒100% after the training. Currently, 100% of the participants understand that baglog waste can be processed into compost, which is expected to be independently applied to their respective agricultural lands in Danda Jaya Village to support environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Empowerment of Farmer Groups through Organic Fertilizer Production Based on Swamp Weeds and Oil Palm Empty Fruit Bunches Abstract This community service program aimed to develop an organic fertilizer production technology utilizing swamp weeds and empty fruit bunches of oil palm (EFB) to support the sustainable cultivation of Hiyung chili in Hiyung Village, Tapin Regency, South Kalimantan. The methods included preliminary surveys, awareness sessions, the construction of an organic fertilizer house, training on the production of organic fertilizer and the operation of a shredding machine, as well as mentoring and monitoring of compost production at the farmer-group level. The results demonstrated: (1) the successful establishment of an organic fertilizer house equipped with a shredding machine; (2) a significant reduction in compost maturation time, from the usual 2–3 months to approximately 3–4 weeks under controlled operational conditions; (3) a reduction of labor requirements by around 40% during the processing stage; (4) full adoption of the technology by participants, with 100% of trainees able to independently produce organic fertilizer after the mentoring phase; and (5) an estimated 20–30% potential reduction in chemical fertilizer expenditure, accompanied by an observed initial decrease of about 10% in NPK use at the group level. Weekly monitoring over 21 days also showed that the compost produced met the physical criteria for maturity—including dark brown color, crumbly texture, and the absence of foul odor. Overall, the program strengthened the self-sufficiency of the farmer group in producing organic inputs and has the potential to improve soil fertility in the medium term. Future recommendations include extended mentoring through field trials, optimization of raw material ratios, and regular maintenance of production facilities to ensure long-term sustainability.
