Abstract

Political debates play a crucial role in democratic processes, allowing candidates to present their ideas, defend policies, and persuade voters. This study applies Toulmins argumentation model to analyze the rhetorical strategies used in the 2024 Binjai Mayoral candidate debate. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through video recordings, transcripts, and documentation of debate discussions. The analysis identifies the presence and structure of Toulmins six argumentation components: claim, grounds, warrant, backing, modal qualifier, and rebuttal. Findings indicate that while candidates frequently use claims and grounds, they often lack strong warrants and rebuttals, leading to arguments that are persuasive but not necessarily well-justified. Additionally, emotional appeals and rhetorical tactics often replace logical reasoning, impacting the overall quality of the debate. The study highlights the need for stronger argumentation frameworks in political communication, emphasizing the importance of data-driven and evidence-based claims. This research contributes to the field of political communication by providing insights into argumentation trends in modern political debates. The findings suggest that training political candidates in structured argumentation techniques could improve public discourse and enhance voters ability to critically assess political messages. Future research should consider comparative analyses of debates across different political levels and the role of media framing in shaping argumentation effectiveness.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the principles of linguistic politeness in the Sundanese language as a reflection of Qur'anic values. The method employs a qualitative approach through content analysis. The research reveals that the politeness principles embedded in Sundanese paribasa align with Qur'anic teachings. These include the concepts of qaulan ma’rufa  (good words), qaulan sadida (truthful words), qaulan baligha (effective words), qaulan karima (noble words), qaulan layyina (gentle words), and qaulan maysura (clear words). These principles highlight the significance of respectful communication, consideration for others' feelings, and promoting harmony within social relationships. Consequently, the politeness observed in Sundanese paribasa serves as a manifestation of Qur'anic teachings in daily social interactions. The findings of this research also enhance the understanding of how local religious and cultural values can synergistically contribute to the development of polite and harmonious communication practices. The novelty of this study lies in its integration of linguistic politeness, rooted in cultural values and Qur'anic principles. It serves as a model for fostering ethical and courteous communication in contemporary society.

Abstract

Academic writing as linguistic communication is often seen as an individual activity requiring critical thinking, in-depth knowledge, and language skills. However, it also involves interpersonal interactions with the academic community, supervisors, and readers. This article explores the personal and interpersonal aspects of academic writing and their impact on writing quality using literature review, theoretical analysis, and document analysis. The study found that personal aspects, such as motivation, idea development, and self-reflection, shape authenticity, while interpersonal feedback enhances clarity, cohesion, and adherence to academic standards. Linguistic analysis reveals personal elements through persona usage (e.g., I, the researcher), while interpersonal aspects appear in objective statements (e.g., this study shows that, as stated by). Thus, academic writing is a synergy of personal and interpersonal elements, essential for improving writing quality, especially for beginners.

Abstract

The decline of democracy and the weakening of the law during the two periods of President Joko Widodo's administration became hot topics discussed by the mass media, including on the YouTube channel Bocor Alus Politik Tempodotco. This research aims to determine the construction of the reality of Jokowi era legal policy through a qualitative research approach of content analysis. Data in the form of text from transcripts of video recordings which were analyzed using Teun A. van Dijk's (1988) critical discourse analysis framework, covering three dimensions of discourse: text, social cognition, and social context. The data source was taken from the Youtube video Podcast Bocor Alus Politik episode Nilai Rocky Gerung untuk 10 Tahun Jokowi: Dinasti Politik dan Warisan Beban untuk Prabowo Subianto, which was broadcast on the Tempodotco Youtube channel on August 26 2024. The research results show that the text dimensions in the podcast use metaphorical and rhetorical language style to emphasize critical assessments of Jokowi's political and legal policy, highlighting the decline of democracy and the practice of political dynasties. The social cognition dimension represents knowledge about Jokowi's role as President who failed to implement democracy and hopes for Prabowo to restore democratic values. The social context dimension shows the role of mass media in influencing public opinion by creating space for critical discussion using digital media. This research recommends the need for further study regarding the role of digital media in building the construction of social reality in Indonesia, especially on social media platforms.

Abstract

This research was conducted by utilizing Norman Fairclough's concept of critical discourse. In this research, data collection method is done by collecting parts of texts which allegedly contain aspects of texts, discourses, and socio-cultural practices. In Indonesia society, LGBT is viewed as an illness which should not exist. However, there are still some parties who attempt to be a spokesman for LGBT group, for instance on Pinterpolitik Instagram account and Pinterpolitik website. So, this research aims to investigate how Pinterpolitik Online Media presents minority issues, particularly LGBT group, as the part of this media’s alignment towards LGBT equity, especially in the field of human rights and politics. The editor created an ideology through this report that minority inclusion, such as LGBTgroup, is not a key concern in Indonesia's cabinet. Then, the editor also stated that society should now be free of unfavorable attitudes against LGBT persons. Pinterpolitik is bold to express something against Indonesian beliefs and culture on equality in the context of Indonesian politics. Keywords: Critical Discourse, Online Media, LGBT, Pinterpolitik
