Abstract

High ball rotation speed is essential for junior tennis spin serve performance, yet physical training curricula generally neglect it. Designing effective training programs requires identifying physical characteristics that predict high ball rotation. This study examines how arm muscle strength and shoulder flexibility affect spin serve ball rotation speed in junior tennis players. The correlational study included 20 Makassar-based 15–16-year-old male junior athletes who had mastered spin serving. A handgrip dynamometer and 2 kg medicine ball throw test tested arm strength. The back scratch test assessed shoulder flexibility. Kinovea analyzed the ball's rotation speed recorded by a Canon EOS 1100D camera (120 fps). The results showed a strong and significant correlation between arm muscle strength and ball rotation speed (r = 0.68; p < 0.001), as well as a moderately significant correlation with shoulder flexibility (r = 0.51; p = 0.002). A multiple regression analysis indicated that these two factors together made up 58% of the ball rotation performance (R^2 = 0.58), with arm muscle strength making up 42% and shoulder flexibility making up 16%. These findings highlight that optimal spin serve performance is strongly influenced by upper body strength and shoulder mobility, which synergistically enhance racket acceleration and ball brushing mechanics. The implication for junior tennis physical training curricula is the need for structured and measurable emphasis on developing specific arm strength and maintaining optimal shoulder range of motion as key predictors of spin serve effectiveness.

Abstract

In the digital era, traditional soccer training often fails to engage tech-savvy students, requiring innovative approaches like Android-based tournament models. By integrating technology with cooperative learning, these models enhance students' soccer skills, strategic understanding, and motivation. This study aims to see the effect of developing the Team Games Tournament (TGT) method with Android-based online games in improving students' understanding of playing soccer. This research method uses the ADDIE model as a framework for making products, with a quantitative approach used to process data obtained through questionnaires in the form of descriptive percentages. The sample involved in this study were 32 students, the sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The results of this study indicate that there is an effect of the pakgolo learning model in improving students' understanding of playing soccer, this is reinforced by the results of the sigs (2-tailed) analysis with a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000 which means that the sig (2-tailed) value <0.05. With the value of tcount = -19.402 with df = 126 so that the ttable = -28.503 is obtained. The conclusion of this study provides a unique method with a combination of technology and cooperative learning, which is rarely widely applied, especially in soccer learning. The contribution of this study adds a new method that can improve skills with a very fun method so that students easily understand the learning material.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of racket grip strength and motion anticipation on the effectiveness of spin serves among junior tennis athletes in Makassar. Using a quantitative correlational design, 20 athletes aged 14–18 years participated. Grip strength was measured with a handgrip dynamometer, motion anticipation with a visual reaction test, and spin serve effectiveness through video analysis of accuracy, direction, and bounce. Multiple regression analysis (α = 0.05) showed that both variables significantly affected spin serve effectiveness (R² = 0.551; p < 0.05). Grip strength had a greater contribution (β = 0.46; p = 0.008) than motion anticipation (β = 0.39; p = 0.018). The findings highlight the importance of integrating physical and cognitive training to enhance spin serve performance in junior tennis athletes. Strength and anticipation training should be combined to optimize serve outcomes

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of aerobic dance frequency and duration on cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescent girls in Makassar. Using a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test control design, 40 girls aged 17–22 were divided into experimental and control groups (n=20 each). The experimental group performed aerobic dance three times per week for 45–60 minutes over eight weeks, while the control group continued routine activities. Cardiorespiratory fitness was measured using the 12-minute Cooper Test. Data analysis included normality, homogeneity, paired t-tests, and independent t-tests. Results indicated a significant VO₂max improvement in the experimental group (Δ mean = +4.70; p < 0.001) compared to no significant change in the control group (Δ mean = -0.35; p > 0.05). The post-test difference between groups was also significant (t = -3.756; p < 0.001). Regular aerobic dance effectively enhances cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescent girls.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the effect of aerobic dance accompanied by traditional and modern music on increasing the cardiovascular endurance of students. The research design used was a quasi-experiment with a pretest-posttest group design. The sample consisted of 40 students of Makassar State University who were divided into two groups: an aerobic dance group with traditional South Sulawesi music and an exercise group with popular modern music. The exercise was carried out for six weeks, three times a week, for 45 minutes per session. Data were collected through a multistage test (beep test) to measure VO₂ max and analyzed using parametric statistical tests. The results showed that both groups experienced a significant increase in cardiovascular endurance (p < 0.05). However, a greater increase occurred in the traditional music group (Δ = 3.34) than in the modern music group (Δ = 2.39). These findings indicate that traditional music accompaniment is more effective in increasing cardiovascular endurance and providing added value in the context of preserving local culture.

Abstract

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of two service techniques, namely flat serve and spin serve, on direct point acquisition in a simulated tennis match situation. The subjects of the study consisted of 20 male junior tennis players, aged 14–16 years, who were divided into two groups based on service technique. Each group was to use one type of serve consistently during three sets of simulated matches. The variables observed included the number of direct points, service speed, accuracy, rally length, and number of double faults. The results of the independent t-test analysis showed that the flat serve group scored a higher average direct points mean, 9.2; SD = 2.15, than the spin serve group mean, 6.8; SD 1.69, with a t-value = 2.74; p = 0.013. Supporting analysis also showed that the flat serve had higher speed, while the spin serve was superior in accuracy and rally duration. These findings indicate that the flat serve is more effective for a fast point scoring strategy, while the spin serve is more suitable for long rallies and game control. Therefore, coaches are advised to integrate service variation training as part of the development of athletes’ playing strategies.
