Abstract

Melanin, a pigment derived from UV radiation, is crucial in preventing skin damage and can cause aesthetic and dermatological problems such as hyperpigmentation or hypopigmentation. Melanogenesis is a complex process involving enzymes and cytokines, with UV being a primary contributor. Tyrosinase is a key enzyme in melanin synthesis. This study aims to test the potential of combining cermai fruit extract (CE) and mulberry fruit (ME) as a tyrosinase inhibitor. The tests included antioxidant activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method, total phenolic content using the Folin Ciocalteu method, flavonoid content using the AlCl3 colorimetric method, and sun protection factor (SPF) value using UV-Vis spectrophotometric method. The results showed that the highest total phenolic content was observed in (CE), followed by the combination of ME: CE in the ratio of 1:3, 1:1, 3:1, and then ME. The same pattern was seen in the flavonoid content assay results. The antioxidant activity, as indicated by the IC50 values, followed the following order CE 418.30%; ME: CE (1:3) 400.49%; ME: CE (1:1) 367.73%; ME: CE (3:1) 358.04%; and ME 344.43%. The highest SPF value was observed in ME. It can be concluded that this study shows that the combination of CE and ME extracts has potential as a tyrosinase inhibitor and skin protective agent from hyperpigmentation due to UV exposure.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the potential effect of methanolic extract of Scurrula atropurpurea (MESA) in reducing oxidative stress through observation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration in mice. In this research, 25 male mice were divided into four groups with five replications. Group I (K1, without MESA) was considered as a control group, while Group II (K2), III (K3), and IV (K4) were given 1000, 2000, and 4000 mg MESA/kg BW, respectively. After 14 days, SOD activity and MDA concentration were measured spectrophotometrically. The SOD activity did not significantly increased (P0.05) in group K1, K2, K3, and K4 with values were 19.4692.072, 17.41.373, 20.533.411, and 23.872.528 U/ml, respectively. In contrast, MDA concentration was decreased (P0.05) with values of 492.75019.418, 492.75019.418, 457.12530.095, 454.62519.080, and 475.87537.659 ng/mL in groups K1, K2, K3, and K4, respectively. It can be concluded that the administration of MESA tend to increase SOD activity and decrease MDA concentration in this study, thus might be able to reduce oxidative stress in mice.

Abstract

Tea and mango mistletoes have to lower blood pressure by improving oxidative stress and endothelial dysfunction. The flavonoid compounds found in these two mistletoes act as antihypertensives. Hypertension is a risk factors that influences the incidence of cardiac disease. This study examines the histopathological of the cardiac of hypertensive rats (preventive model) after treatment of methanolic extract combination of tea and mango mistletoes. This study used a completely randomized experimental design with 25 Wistar rats in total for five treatments, namely negative control (-), positive control (+), treatment 1 (dose of 50 mg/kg BW), treatment 2 (doses of 100 mg/kg BW), and treatment 3 (doses of 200 mg/kg BW). In this study, Deoxycorticosterone acetate (DOCA) were used to induce hyperttension in experimental animals. Data were analysed with one-way ANOVA test using JAMOVI (version 1.1.9.0) and posteriori. There was a significant difference between all groups (p<0.05). Administration of a methanolic extract combination of tea and mango mistletoes as the preventive model can significantly reduce hypertrophy of cardiac muscle cells. This effect occured with a dose of 50 mg/kg BW, the optimal dose to reduce hypertrophy of cardiac muscle cells in Wistar rats male.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of obesity in Indonesia has contributed to a rise in metabolic disorders, including hypertriglyceridemia, which is a major risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Therefore, safe and effective natural- based therapeutic alternatives are needed. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a combined extract of tea mistletoe (Scurrula atropurpurea) and mango mistletoe (Dendrophthoe pentandra) leaves as a dietary adjuvant on serum triglyceride levels in male Wistar rats (Rattus norvegicus) induced with a high- fat diet. This experimental study employed a randomized pre-test post-test control group design with five groups: negative control, positive control (high-fat diet), and three treatment groups receiving the combined extract at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight (n = 7 per group). The treatment was administered orally for 37 days. Serum triglyceride levels were measured using the Colorimetric Enzymatic Test (Glycerol Phosphate Oxidase method) and analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results demonstrated a statistically significant difference in triglyceride levels among the groups (p = 0.01024). The positive control group exhibited the highest mean triglyceride level, whereas administration of the combined mistletoe extract resulted in a reduction in triglyceride levels. The most pronounced decrease was observed in the group receiving 100 mg/kg body weight, which showed the lowest mean triglyceride level among the treatment groups. The hypolipidemic effect of the combined extract is presumed to be associated with the presence of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids and polyphenols, which possess antioxidant properties and play a role in lipid metabolism regulation. In conclusion, the combined extract of tea mistletoe and mango mistletoe has potential as a natural dietary adjuvant for lowering triglyceride levels and improving lipid profiles in conditions of high-fat diet–induced dyslipidemia.

Abstract

East Java has tremendous potential as a center for an integrated Halal industry based on superior products/products/services. East Java also has halal-certified MSMEs, dominated by the food and beverage sector (mamin). So the purpose of this study is to examine the profile of food MSMEs and describe the level of readiness of food MSMEs related to the halal industry in East Java. Methods This research uses a blended method, namely quantitative descriptive and qualitative methods. The exploration method is through the Rapid Rural Appraisal (RRA). Response selection using a purposive sampling technique. The results of the descriptive analysis of the profile of MSMEs who became respondents in this study were that most MSMEs already had NIB and PIRT. Most MSMEs that have NIB also have PIRT (48.72%). Ownership of NIB and PIRT is a commitment of MSMEs to comply with the government's business administration regulations. This shows the manager's administrative order, which is the key in developing the halal industry and culture. In conclusion, SMEs with PIRT also have a halal policy, have attended halal training, and are orderly in selecting and taking an inventory of a well-organized list of materials, products, and equipment, inventory management, procedures, and traceability. However, in terms of product handling, internal audit, and administrative review, many people still use PIRT, even though they already use it. Therefore, the focus of support is on these issues.

Abstract

Soursop leaves (Annona muricata L.) are known to contain various bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant properties. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant activity of soursop leaf extract using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) method and to determine its total phenolic content using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. Antioxidant activity was assessed at extract concentrations of 500 and 1000 ppm, with quercetin used as a positive control. The results showed that the soursop leaf extract exhibited very strong antioxidant activity, with an IC50 value of 9,486 ppm. The total phenolic content of the extract was relatively high, ranging from 102,929 to 195,702 mg GAE/g extract. The strong antioxidant activity observed is likely associated with the high content of phenolic compounds, which play a crucial role in scavenging free radicals. These findings suggest that soursop leaf extract has significant potential as a natural antioxidant source for applications in the functional food and pharmaceutical industries.
