Abstract

ABSTRACTWriting is the practice of reaching out to one's mind and exploring it creatively. In writing activity, the writer should have accurate information, strong arguments, and good knowledge of organization and mechanics before delivering their ideas. However, in schools, writing is commonly considered as the most difficult skill to learn by the students of English as a foreign language (EFL). The problems of EFL students’ writing could refer to the five aspects of writing: content, organization, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. This research aimed to increase the quality of the teaching and learning process in the classroom in order to improve EFL students’ writing skills by using the Jigsaw and Online Searching Strategy (JOSS). It used Action Research as the research design and was conducted in the tenth grade of Ilmu Bahasa dan Budaya (Language and Culture) class of Public Senior High School (SMA Negeri) 2 in Malang, East Java, Indonesia, which consisted of 22 students. The result showed that all of the students have passed the criteria of success and given good responses to the implementation of JOSS. Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers consider using JOSS as a teaching strategy to improve tenth-grade students’ writing skills.ABSTRAKMenulis merupakan aktivitas menjangkau pikiran seseorang dan menyampaikannya secara kreatif. How to Cite: Isgiarno, Y. Abstract

This article is part of a larger report of research which explored and compared Australian and Indonesian university students’ attitudes toward plagiarism, understanding of plagiarism, and understanding of university policy on plagiarism. It focuses on whether or not Australian and Indonesian students differed in their understanding of the notion of plagiarism and its various forms. Data of the Australian and Indonesian subjects’ understanding of plagiarism were gained using a questionnaire and focus group interviews. The results showed that the Australian students were more knowledgeable of the notion of plagiarism and its various forms than the Indonesian students. The differences may be attributed to the academic context of the study. The Indonesian students were not familiar with the Western norm in academic writing, the norm which is regularly practiced in the Australian context. This study strongly recommends that the Indonesian students’ awareness of plagiarism be increased in order to avoid plagiarism. Keywords: understanding of plagiarism, definition of plagiarism, academic context, focus group interviews, university study.

Abstract

This study examined idea representation and summarizingstrategies in article summaries written by Indonesian EFLstudents. When the study was conducted, the students wereattending a graduate course on “the Teaching of Writing” in theGraduate Program in ELT at State University of Malang,Indonesia. This study describes the students’ article summariesin terms of idea representation based on the ICF (‘introduction,’‘content,’ and ‘finalization’) frame and strategies applied in thearticle summaries. Data in the form of article summaries writtenby 16 students were collected at the end of the course. Theresults of data analysis show that most of the Indonesian EFLstudents could successfully represent the the ideas from thejournal articles into their summaries. However, not all of thestudents consider that ‘finalization’ component in the frameneeds to be included in their summaries. In terms of strategies insummarizing, most of the students made summaries by copyingideas and words with no or some modification, whereas onlysome of them write summaries by using their own expressions. This means that the students found that summarizing is not aneasy task. Therefore, this study recommends EFL teachers toteach their students strategies to summarize successfully. It alsoencourages EFL teachers to remind the students to use their ownexpressions in their article summaries in order to avoidplagiarism. Keywords: Idea representation; strategies in summarizing;article summaries; journal articles; IndonesianEFL students

Abstract

Abstract: This article aimed to find the tendencies exhibited by Indonesian students of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in writing an academic essay in English. A content analysis method is employed as the method of the study. The data of the study were the final draft of the essays written by EFL students of the English Department of a reputable university in East Java, Indonesia. The essays were analyzed by looking for the shared properties in each part of the essay. The data were analyzed by extracting the most common properties in each essay which are (a) thesis statement, (b) coherency, and (c) concluding remark. The results showed that the students tended to forget to use definite and indefinite articles, misuse the definite and indefinite articles with plural forms, to use of nouns and pronouns inconsistently, to use an English sentence with an Indonesian rhetoric pattern, and to not include a summary of the subtopics discussed in their body paragraphs. The result may be use as reference for future writing classes in Indonesia.

Abstract

Professional development activities are done by English teachers from formal educational institutions and by trainers from non-English majors who teach IELTS preparation program in non-formal educational institutions. This study investigated the professional development activities done by IELTS trainers from non-English majors and how the professional development activities help them improve their teaching competencies. A case study design was applied, and an in-depth interview and documentary analysis were used to gain the data. Four selected research subjects were involved in this study. The results showed that the IELTS trainers' professional development activities include collaborative and independent learning activities. Furthermore, those activities help the IELTS trainers from non-English majors positively as they can fulfill their demand to improve their teaching competencies since there is limited institutional support for them in professional development. Therefore, the institution where the IELTS trainers work should provide adequate formal learning supports. In addition, the IELTS trainers in this study and other IELTS trainers should be involved in other informal learning activities more frequently.
