Abstract

Background: Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathy characterized by the gradual loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) and their axons, leading to irreversible visual field loss. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the severity of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and vision-related quality of life (VRQoL) in a single center in Indonesia. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the eye polyclinic of Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital, Padang, Indonesia, from June to August 2024. A total of 54 patients with POAG were included and categorized into mild, moderate, and severe groups based on their cup-to-disc ratio and visual field index (VFI). VRQoL was assessed using the Indonesian version of the National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ 25). Results: The mean VRQoL score was significantly lower in the severe group (60.63 ± 13.04) compared to the moderate (81.79 ± 10.42) and mild (85.04 ± 10.52) groups (p = 0.000). A strong negative correlation was observed between glaucoma severity and VRQoL (r = -0.667, p = 0.000). The social functioning subscale showed the strongest correlation with severity (r = -0.573, p = 0.000). Conclusion: The severity of POAG significantly impacts VRQoL, with more severe disease associated with lower QoL scores. The social functioning domain appears to be particularly affected. These findings underscore the importance of comprehensive glaucoma management that addresses not only clinical parameters but also the patient's overall quality of life.

Abstract

Introduction Childhood stunting, defined as low height-for-age, is a persistent global health crisis associated with delayed developmental trajectories, impaired cognitive function, and increased chronic disease risk later in life (Semba et al., 2011). Maternal short stature (MSS), typically reflecting chronic nutritional deprivation and adverse environmental exposures during the mother’s own early life, is a highly recognized predictor of offspring stunting (Wirth et al., 2019). The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to rigorously quantify the pooled association between MSS and childhood stunting and to analyze the critical biological and socioeconomic effect modifiers across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs). Methods This systematic review was conducted in adherence to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA 2020) guidelines (PRISMA Statement, 2020). A comprehensive search identified 15 large observational studies, predominantly based on Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) data, focusing on children aged 0–59 months. MSS was generally defined categorically (shortest quintile or fixed cutoffs, typically <145 cm or <150 cm) compared to the tallest reference group. Study quality was assessed using the Risk Of Bias In Non-Randomized Studies – of Interventions (ROBINS-I) tool, specifically focusing on bias due to confounding (ROBINS-I; Tadesse et al., 2015). Pooled effect sizes were calculated using random-effects models and presented as Adjusted Relative Risks (RRs) or Odds Ratios (ORs). Results Analysis of 15 studies revealed a strong and highly significant association between MSS and offspring stunting (p < 0.001). The pooled categorical analysis demonstrated that children born to the shortest mothers faced an Adjusted Relative Risk (RR) of 2.85 (95% CI: 2.50, 3.25) for stunting compared to children born to the tallest mothers, indicating nearly a three-fold increased risk. Continuous analysis confirmed this protective association, showing that a 1-cm increase in maternal height significantly reduced the risk of stunting (Semba et al., 2011; Baten et al., 2019). The intergenerational effect is primarily driven by maternal physiological constraints; the mother-offspring association (RR 1.89) was substantively larger than the father-offspring association (RR 1.56), even when controlling for shared environment (Tessema et al., 2021). Discussion The observed magnitude and consistency of the association underscore the role of MSS as a potent physiological determinant of child health, reflecting an intergenerational legacy of undernutrition and poor intrauterine environment (Wirth et al., 2019). Crucially, detailed risk stratification showed that the high stunting risk associated with MSS persists relatively unchanged across socioeconomic strata, suggesting that current household affluence cannot fully mitigate the physiological constraints imposed by the mother's own historical deprivation (Baten et al., 2019). Modifiable factors such as increased Antenatal Care (ANC) visits and higher maternal education provide independent risk mitigation, offering critical intervention pathways (Tekle et al., 2021). Conclusion Maternal short stature is confirmed as one of the most significant, non-modifiable risk factors for childhood stunting in LMICs. The dominance of the maternal effect and the resistance of this risk to current socioeconomic buffering necessitate targeted, life-course interventions focusing on enhanced prenatal nutritional support and adolescent girl nutrition programs to disrupt this potent intergenerational cycle.

Abstract

This study examines how Islamic law (fiqh) views marriage in the forms of monogamy and polygamy, as well as how the process and reasons for divorce are viewed from a contemporary fiqh perspective. In everyday life, marriages do not always run smoothly. Some couples choose to live with only one partner (monogamy), while others choose to live with more than one partner (polygamy), in accordance with religious rules. Furthermore, divorce is not uncommon for various reasons. This study aims to examine how contemporary Islamic scholars view and provide solutions to these problems. The approach used in this study is a literature review, compiling various opinions from classical fiqh books and the opinions of contemporary scholars. The results of this study indicate that contemporary fiqh attempts to provide a fairer and more balanced view, adapting to current social conditions. Modern scholars increasingly promote monogamy as the ideal form of marriage, while polygamy is only permitted if there is a compelling reason and is carried out fairly. Divorce is still recognized in Islam, but should be a last resort after all efforts to improve the relationship have been exhausted.

Abstract

Gili Trawangan, a small island tourism destination in North Lombok, Indonesia, faces high vulnerability to hydrometeorological hazards, such as tidal flooding, coastal erosion, and storm surges. In this context, risk communication is critical in disaster mitigation, particularly with the increasing use of digital communication channels. This study examines how hydrometeorological disaster risk communication is implemented across three stages: anticipatory, crisis, and learning, using the Crisis and Emergency Risk Communication (CERC) framework. This research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with key stakeholders, including local government officials (BPBD), civil society organizations, tourism business actors, community leaders, residents, and tourists. Empirical findings were analyzed using the six core principles of CERC (be first, be right, be credible, express empathy, promote action, and show respect) to assess the effectiveness of digital risk communication. The findings indicated that risk communication in Gili Trawangan remains fragmented and uneven across stages. Digital channels support rapid information dissemination during the anticipatory and crisis stages, but they remain limited in inclusivity and multilingual accessibility, particularly for tourists and temporary populations. In the learning stage, the absence of institutionalized digital evaluation mechanisms constrains continuous improvement. This study suggested integrated and inclusive digital risk communication to enhance disaster resilience and support sustainable tourism in small island destinations.

Abstract

The development of the art of reading the Qur'an (tilawah) plays an important role in maintaining the Qur'anic tradition in North Sumatra, especially since this region is one of the regions actively involved in organizing the Musabaqah Tilawatil Qur'an (MTQ). However, the quality of development at the district/city level is not evenly distributed, thus impacting the ability of qari and qari'ah to achieve professional tilawah standards. This study aims to analyze the development program of the art of reading the Qur'an implemented by the LPTQ of North Sumatra Province, including the form of activities, implementation mechanisms, and its effectiveness in improving participant competence. The research method uses a descriptive qualitative approach through direct observation of development activities, analysis of official institutional documents, and supporting documentation related to the training process and implementation of the MTQ. The results show that the LPTQ development program includes routine development, Training Center (TC), and Training of Trainers (ToT), each of which has a different contribution to improving participant abilities. Routine development serves as a foundation, TC has proven to be most effective in maturing participants before the MTQ, while ToT plays a role in increasing the capacity of trainers in the region. However, the program's overall effectiveness remains hampered by a limited number of expert trainers, limited facilities, regional disparities, and low interest among young people in the art of tilawah. This study concludes that training needs to be strengthened through equitable distribution of trainers, increased program intensity, utilization of digital media, and more stable budget support to achieve sustainable tilawah training in North Sumatra.
