Abstract

Cayenne peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) are horticultural commodities with high economic value and increasing market demand, both for household consumption and large-scale processing industries. However, cayenne pepper productivity in Indonesia remains relatively low, partly due to the limited availability of fertile land. One potential solution to this problem is the utilization of marginal lands, including ultisols. Ultisols possess chemical characteristics that are less favorable for optimal plant growth, such as low pH, poor nutrient content, and high aluminum saturation. There fore, this study aimed to obtain information on cayenne pepper genotypes that can adapt well and produce optimally on ultisols. The research was conducted at the Experimental Garden of the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Bengkulu, from May to October 2023, using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. Observed parameters included plant height, first dichotomous height, stem diameter, number of dichotomous points, total leaf area, shoot dry weight, stomatal density, days to first harvest, number of fruits per plant, fruit length and diameter, fruit weight per plant, and percentage of marketable fruits. Data were analyzed using ANOVA at a 5% significance level and followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the same level. The results indicated significant differences among genotypes in most growth and yield parameters. The genotypes ‘Iggo’ and ‘Lajang’ exhibited superior performance, with the highest dry biomass weight and the highest fruit weight per plant. These findings suggest that the ‘Iggo’ and ‘Lajang’ genotypes hold strong potential for cultivation on Ultisol soils to support sustainable national cayenne peppers production improvement.

Abstract

Background: Diabetic is one of the main health problems in society throughout the world, so alternatives are needed to help prevent increasing blood sugar levels. In this case, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are able to inhibit the performance of the alpha glucosidase enzyme in breaking down carbohydrates into glucose, lowering blood sugar levels so that lactic acid bacteria have potential in controlling hyperglycemia. Objectives: The purpose of this work is to assess the potential of four different strains of Lactobacillus that were isolated from lemea to reduce blood sugar levels in mice.Materials and Methods: This study used a pre-test, post-test, control group design for its experimental methodology. Six groups of 18 male mice, aged between 10 and 12 weeks, with body weights ± 25 g each, were formed, three mice comprised each group. This study was divided into 6 treatment groups, namely 1 group given acarboce, 1 group without treatment (aquadest), and 4 treatment groups given 4 types of pure BAL culture. Treatment consisted of P1 (giving L plantarum B1), P2 (giving L plantarum B2), P3 (giving L plantarum S1), and P4 (giving L fermentum S2). The initial stage of the research was to measure the initial fasting blood sugar of the mice, then alloxan was induced at a dose of 4.54 mg/kg BW and given intravenously at 0.1/10 g BW to the mice. After 5 days of alloxan induction, the fasting blood sugar level was measured again. If the blood sugar level was ≥ 127 mg/dL, the mice were declared DM and ready to be given treatment. The dose of acarbose was 0.65 mg/kg bw, and BAL culture with a concentration of 10 8 CFU/mL of 0.1 mg/ 10 g bw for 14 days every 7 days analyzed the blood sugar levels of the mice. Results: The results of the study showed that giving pure culture of L. plantarum from Betung bamboo shoot lemea to mice with type 2 diabetes mellitus (type 2 DM) as treatment P2 was superior to giving acarbose, P1, P3, and P4 in reducing blood sugar levels with pancreatic damage 50% and lower than other treatments, while the pancreas of type 2 DM mice without therapy had the greatest damage score based on histopathological data. Conclusion: Lactic acid bacteria from Lemea can help lower blood sugar levels and prevent the rate of damage to the pancreas of diabetic mice, with the best culture being L. plantarum from Lemea Betung bamboo shoots

Abstract

Hybrid cultivar is one of the best alternative to increase national hot pepper production. However, lacking of local hybrid cultivars resulted in the dependency on imported expensive seeds. The objective of this research is to study heterobeltiosis potential and yield of hybrids generated from crosses of several hot pepper lines. Nine parental lines and their 19 hybrids were evaluated in field experiment at the Pasir Sarongge Experimetal Station of IPB, Cipanas, West Java, in a randomize complete block design with 3 replications. The results indicated that several crosses showed a high potential heterobeltiosis. The cross of CI034 x CI026, CI042 x CI025, dan CI042 x CI026 showed heterobeltiosis value of more than 100%. Most of the crosses revealed an excellent yield for medium fruit type the yield was about 1 kg per plant (CI034 x CIO06), and for large fruit type was 1,8 kg per plant (CI042 x CIO06), in average, which were higher than the yield of Hot Beauty, a commercial hybrid cultivar.   Key words: Heterobeltiosis, Hot pepper

Abstract

ABSTRACTInformation on combining ability and heterosis are desirable to determine the best parents in chili pepper hybrid variety development. To estimate general and specific combining abilities and  heterobeltiosis of backcross lines selected for CMV tolerance, eight selected lines were crossed to three CMV tolerant lines in a Line x Tester method and the crosses were evaluated in a CMV inoculated condition. The results showed that general and specific combining abilities varied tremendously among crosses and traits. Generally, specific combining ability (sca) variances were higher than general combining ability (gca) variance indicating that interaction of non-aditive predominance the inheritance of traits under study. Amongs lines evaluated, there was no a general combiner line for vegetative growth. However, lines S1B3A-29-13-47 and S1B3B-12-13-2 were the best general combiner for a breeding program to improve total number of fruits and fruit weight per plant, respectively. Crosses of S1B3C-16-22-34 x C1042, S1B3B-49-40-6 x C1043, and S1B3C-34-18-9 x C1042 were consedered the most prospective crosses as indicated by high value of sca, i.e., 130.53, 102.01 and 61.93, with heterobeltiosis estimate of 146.06, 26.05 and 24.31, respectively. Keywords: capsicum annuum, heterobeltiosis, GCA, SCA

Abstract

[GENETIC VARIABILITY AND HERITABILITY OF 10 ACCESSIONS OF BIRD’S EYE CHILI (Capsicum frutescens L.) GROWN ON COASTAL LAND]. Cultivation of bird’s eye chili (Capsicum frutescens L.) on saline coastal land in Indonesia faces several environmental constraints. Efforts to increase bird’s eye chili productivity in saline land are by planting varieties that are adaptive to stressed environmental conditions. This research aims to evaluate performance, estimate genetic diversity and heritability of agronomic traits in 10 bird’s eye chili accessions in coastal land in Kuala Alam, Bengkulu. The research was conducted using a one-factor Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 10 accessions as treatments and three replications. The results showed that the characters of plant height, stem diameter, flowering date, dichotomous height, fruit length and fruit diameter had wide genotypic variation. Broad phenotypic was shown by all characters. High heritability values were obtained in the characters of plant height, stem diameter, flowering date, dichotomous height, number of dichotomous points, fruit length and fruit diameter. The characters of number of leaves, leaf greenness, number of fruits per plant and fruit weight per plant have medium heritability values. The number of stomata and stomatal density characters have low heritability values. Accession Bangka 2 has superior performance in the characters of plant height, stem diameter, flowering date, dichotomous height, number of dichotomous point, fruit length, fruit diameter and fruit weight per plant. Accessions with superior performance and characters that have high heritability values with a wide genotypic and phenotypic range are used as elders in plant breeding programs. These findings form the basis for the development of superior bird’s eye chili varieties that are adaptive to saline land. Full text pdf
