Abstract

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women and is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. This underlines the importance of preventive strategies to reduce the risk. Harnessing natural products like tea could be an alternative preventive strategy. In this study, the chemopreventive potential of roselle flower tea (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) enriched with cinnamon oil (Cinnamomum burmannii) and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) was evaluated. The tea was formulated using a stirred boiler tank and tested for its cytotoxicity against T47D cells using the MTT method. The cytotoxicity test showed that with the addition of cinnamon oil and lemongrass, roselle tea had more significant cytotoxic activity against T47D cancer cells than pristine roselle tea. Adding 5 g of cinnamon and lemongrass oil vapor for 15 seconds into the tea showed the highest cytotoxicity, with an IC50 of 730 μg/mL. This value is almost three times higher than without adding cinnamon oil and lemongrass. In conclusion, adding cinnamon oil and lemongrass to the roselle tea formulation can increase cytotoxic activity against T47D cancer cells, indicating its potential as a natural anti-cancer agent. Keywords: Chemopreventive, Cinnamon, Lemongrass, Roselle Tea, T47D Cells.

Abstract

Abstract

Breast cancer is a deadly disease for women. It is crucial to take preventive measures, one of which involves using natural ingredients as chemopreventive agents. Clitoria ternatea flowers, cinnamon, and lemongrass oil have been proven to have cytotoxic activity in several studies. This research aims to analyze the effect of adding cinnamon and lemongrass oil vapor to C. ternatea flower tea on the cytotoxic activity of T47D breast cancer cells. Cytotoxic activity testing was carried out colorimetrically using the MTT (3- (4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) 2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay method. The results of the research showed that there was a decrease in the IC50 value of C. ternatea flower tea with the addition of cinnamon and lemongrass oil vapor. The IC50 value of C. ternatea flower tea without additional ingredients was the most potent with 14159 μg/mL, compared to 15 g addition of cinnamon with 1164 μg/mL; meanwhile, for 15 seconds of evaporation time for lemongrass, it was at 331 μg/mL, respectively This research shows the potential of C. ternatea flower tea with the addition of cinnamon and lemongrass oil vapor as a chemopreventive agent against breast cancer cells.

Abstract

Global demand for fossil energy continues to increase, affecting both the environment and energy availability. This study aims to describe energy crisis and its impacts, the adoption of renewable energy (RE), and the educational challenges in addressing these problems in Indonesia.  The Systematic Literature Review method was conducted using the Harzing’s Publish or Perish application for Scopus and Google Scholar indexed articles with the keywords “energy crisis,” “renewable energy,” “energy education Indonesia,” and “impact of fossil energy”, covering publications from 2017 to March 2025. A total of 116 articles met the eligibility criteria. The results indicate that the environmental impacts include increases in CO2 emissions driven by urbanization, industrialization, and transportation. Globally, RE adoption remains at only 1%. The use of renewable energy in Indonesia is relatively low, at 11.31% of the available energy supply. Indonesia’s educational strategies include establishing specialized schools for the development of RE, curriculum support, and implementing project-based learning. These strategies must be replicated and further developed by other institutions. Through these efforts, Indonesia is expected to become more aware of the limitations and impacts of fossil energy and better able to utilize the availability of RE.
