Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the inheritance of vowels in the Karo language or Bahasa Karo (hereafter, BK) from Proto-Austronesian (PAN), and BK words that show the retention or inheritance of certain vowels, such as /a/, /i/, /u/, and //. The method involved comparing the phonological elements of BK with the equivalent elements in PAN by using the theory of comparative historical linguistics, including searching for inherited vowels in the penultimate and ultimate positions and observing the retention patterns that occur. The data were derived from 200 Swadesh words and three interviewers. Vocal retention occurs more frequently in the penultimate position than in the ultimate position. This shows how phonological positions affect vowel stability during language transition. These findings conclude that certain phonological components, particularly vowels, have a greater tendency to persist in specific environments. BK has preserved a significant portion of the original PAN vowel inventory, exhibiting less vowel reduction and merger compared to adjacent languages. The retention of vowels in BK indicates a phonological conservatism relative to the more dynamic vowel alterations observed in other Austronesian branches. This study also found a close relationship between PAN and BK in the inheritance of phonological elements of linear vocal of /a/,/i/,/u/,/e/, and one nonlinear vowel sound of /o/. Another important result is the transfer of the vowel /u/ from PAN to BK in the ultimate position shows a pattern of retention or direct inheritance.

Abstract

Live streaming sessions on online platforms, focusing on two different genres of games: Clash Royale and DreadOut. Using descriptive qualitative research with content analysis, the study identified and categorized swear words into six types: sexuality, insults, animal-based terms, personal background, intellect-based terms, and English swears. The analysis revealed that the frequency and types of swear words varied depending on the game's nature. In Clash Royale, animal-based terms were predominantly used, while in DreadOut, English swears were more prevalent. Overall, the most frequent swear words across both videos were related to animal-based terms, and English swears, suggesting that gamers adapt their language based on emotions and game environments. The study sheds light on the dynamics of language use in online gaming communities and highlights the role of swear words as expressions of emotion and intensity during gameplay. Further research could explore the psychological and social implications of swearing in gaming contexts and strategies for promoting responsible language use among gamers.

Abstract

This study explores how hoaxes spread on TikTok by focusing on the use of language and hashtags as tools to influence public perception. Through the analysis of viral videos from 2025, the research uncovers how strategies like impersonating authority, emotional appeals, and simplified narratives are used to make false information feel convincing. Hashtags such as #fyp, #beritahoax, #deepfake, and #indonesiagelap play an important role in increasing visibility and shaping the tone of the content. These hoaxes often appear relatable, urgent, or credible—even when they are misleading. The findings show that TikTok’s algorithm, combined with the strategic use of language, makes it easy for misinformation to spread and influence how people perceive certain issues. The study highlights how easily misinformation can circulate in emotionally driven digital spaces and why digital literacy is essential to help users recognize and respond to manipulative content.

Abstract

This study uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the role that language plays in the formation of linguistic identity between Brunei Darussalam and Medan, Indonesia. It investigates how speakers adjust across multilingual and cultural borders, drawing on Decolonial Linguistics (Kelley, 2020) and Linguistic Identity Theory (Pavlenko & Norton, 2020). Self-interview data from a qualitative introspective case study highlight significant variations in pragmatics (kita, jua), pronunciation (A/E sounds), and vocabulary (kereta, lalu). Although these differences first led to misunderstanding, they eventually promoted linguistic awareness and identity negotiation. The results demonstrate that the speaker preserved cultural roots while creating a hybrid language identity that combined aspects of Indonesian and Bruneian. The research emphasizes autoethnography as an introspective method for comprehending the intersections of language, power, and belonging in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of using ChatGPT on students' writing skills, especially simple sentences in English. The background of this study is based on students' still low ability to write sentences with correct structure and grammar, especially in the use of Simple Present Tense. This study used a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design of the pretest-post-test control group design. The research sample consisted of two eighth grade classes at MTsS YMPI Tanjungbalai, namely class VIII-1 as the experimental class learning using ChatGPT and class VIII-2 as the control class learning using conventional methods, each consisting of 30 students. Data were collected through writing tests given before and after the treatment. The results of the analysis showed that the average post-test score of the experimental class was higher than the control class, and the t-test produced a significance value of 0.000 <0.05. This indicates a significant difference between the two groups. Thus, it can be concluded that the use of ChatGPT has a positive and significant effect on improving students' ability to write simple English sentences, especially in understanding the basic structure of Subject-Verb-Object and the application of Simple Present Tense.
