Abstract

The purpose of knowing and analyzing the influence of vocabulary mastery and reading interest on the Ability to Understand Narrative Text. The population observed in this research is the students of class VIII (Eight) SMP Negeri in Kecamatan Makasar East Jakarta. The sample numbered 60 respondents from 3 schools. The sample was obtained through a simple random sample, that is the researcher combined respondents in the population so that they would be measured in the same amount. This study has three variables divided into 2 independent variables (vocabulary mastery and reading interest variables) and 1 dependent variable (Understanding Narrative Text Skill variable). Data collection is done through multiple choice tests, questionnaires and written tests for all variables. Data acquisition was then analyzed using multiple correlation and regression techniques. Before performing a regression test, the test of analysis requirements must be achieved first, such as normality test and linearity test. The result of this research is 1) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery and reading interest together to the Ability to Understand Narrative Text of Junior High School Students in Kecamatan Makasar in East Jakarta. This is evidenced by the value of Sig. 0,000 <0.05 and F_ count = 29,769; 2) There is a significant influence of vocabulary mastery on the Ability to Understand Narrative Text of Junior High School Students in Kecamatan Makasar in East Jakarta. This is evidenced by the value of Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and thitung = 4.863; 3) There is a significant influence of reading interest on the Ability to Understand Narrative Text of Junior High School Students in Kecamatan Makasar in East Jakarta. This is evidenced by the value of Sig. 0.000 <0.05 and thitung = 4.438; . It shows that the ability to understand Narrative Text is highly controlled or influenced by their vocabulary mastery and reading interest. Abstract

The readability level of reading text in the English textbook entitled “Pathway to English” used by the eleventh grade students of State Islamic Senior High School in Tangerang. The objective of the research was to know whether the textbook is suitable to the ability of students, to know whether the reading texts are suitable to student and to know the readability level of reading texts in an English textbook entitled “Pathway to English” which is used by the eleven grade students of State Islamic Senior High School in Tangerang. Method of the research was descriptive qualitative method. The data analyzed through document study. The researcher has completed the following steps which she tries to describe, elaborate, and analyze the readability level of the textbook entitled “Pathway to English” a textbook for eleven grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang. From the writer’s analysis, reading texts in English Textbook entitled “Pathway to English” a textbook for eleven grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang which not readable with students for eleven grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang are: from sixteen reading texts, there are six texts that readable with state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang. The reading texts are text 2, 3, 4, 11, 13 and 16. It can be classified Flesch Reading Ease Score 50-59 the description of the style of the text is fairly difficult. There are six   texts from sixteen texts or 37.5 % texts at this level is readable with eleventh grade of state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang. Meanwhile, there are ten texts (62.5 %) from sixteen texts that not readable with state Islamic senior high school in Tangerang.

Abstract

Penelitian bertujuan untuk menganalisis dan menguji kebenaran hipotesis mengenai pengaruh persepsi atas Gaya Belajar dan Penguasaan Kosakata terhadap Pemahaman Teks Recount. Hipotesis penelitian yang diuji meliputi: 1) Pengaruh model Gaya Belajar terhadap Pemahaman Bacaan Teks Recount. 2) Pengaruh Penguasaan Kosakata terhadap Pemahaman Bacaan Teks Recount.3) Pengaruh Gaya Belajar dan Penguasaan Kosakata terhadap Pemahaman Bacaan Teks Recount. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode survei. Populasi adalah siswa kelas X SMA Negeri di Jakarta Selatan dengan besar sampel sebanyak 72 siswa, dengan teknik sampling yang digunakan yaitu random sampling. Instrumen penelitian yang digunakan yaitu tes butir soal Pemahaman Bahasa Inggris sebanyak 30 pertanyaan yang telah diuji homogenitasnya dengan besar Sig. = 0,00. Analisis data menggunakan analysis of varians (ANOVA) dua jalur/arah. Hasil pengujian hipotesis diperoleh kesimpulan sebagai berikut: 1) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan persepsi atas gaya belajar terhadap pemahaman Bacaan Teks Recount, hal tersebut dibuktikan dengan Sig. = 0.005 dan Fh = 15.907. 2) Terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan penguasaan kosakata terhadap pemahaman bacaan teks recount siswa SMA Negeri di Jakarta Selatan, hal tersebut dibuktikan dengan Sig. = 0.025 dan Fh = 9.122. 3) Terdapat Pengaruh yang signifikan Persepsi atas Gaya Belajar dan Penguasaan Kosakata terhadap pemahaman Bacaan Teks Recount siswa SMA Negeri di Jakarta Selatan, hal tersebut dibuktikan dengan Sig. = 0.000 dan Fh 10.358. Hasil penelitian ini berguna untuk meningkatkan kualitas pembelajaran dan meningkatkan pemahaman Bacaan Teks Recount di tingkat SMA.
