Abstract

ABSTRACTLeachate is one of the inevitable consequences of the practice of solid waste disposal in open dumping that can cause environmental problem, especially water pollution. The biological methods have been proved as an efficient alternative for the treatment. Designing the best operational system for leachate treatment would require the determination of the biological kinetics that are valid only for a certain practiced process. Two types of open dumping leachates, which were taken from drought and rainy season, were used to determine the kinetics, Yg, Ks and b. The acclimated activated sludge was used in three batch reactors with different initial MLVSS concentration (1700, 500 and 400 g/l for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reactors). The parameters observed on this research were COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand), MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids) and MLVSS (Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids). The research shown that  value ranges from 0.058 to 0.372 (dˉ1), Yg value ranges from 0.6166 to 0.9114 (mg MLVSS/mg COD), Ks value ranges from 353.4 to 3362.1 (mg/l), and b value ranges from 0.1248 to 0.132 (dˉ1), for the dissolved oxygen of 2.7-4.6 mg/l and pH value around 7-9. The parameters of bioreactor design were calculated based on the 3rd reactor kinetic values for the influent flow rate (Q) of 20 m3/d, the mean cell-residence time (c) of 10 days and the MLVSS concentration of 3200 mg/l, with COD and BOD5 of 10 000 mg/l and 3800 mg/l, and COD and BOD5 effluent of 50 mg/l and 38 mg/l. The result of bioreactor design were as follows: reactor volume of 171 m3, the sludge production of 54.6 kg/d, the oxygen requirement of 96.1 kg/d, the power requirements for blower of 5.1 kW, and the reactor dimension of 4x7.125x6 m for depth, length and wide.Key words : leachate, activated sludge, kinetics parameter

Abstract

ABSTRACTCleaner production is currently considered as a strategic element in manufacturing technology. The application of cleaner production is focused on the reduction or elimination of environmental pollution in their sources, and in the same time in increasing the effectiveness and efficiency of the resource utilization in industrial processes. The objectives of this research were to produce and characterize membranes from natural polymers (cellulose acetate and chitosan), (ii) to test the performance of the produced membrane for cleaner production (wastewater reuse/recycling) in pulp and paper industry as a case study, and ( iii) to evaluate the technical and economical feasibility of the membrane application in the field. Results have shown that a relative high flux of 100 L/m2hr was achieved with the chitosan membrane, which is comparable with the flux of commercial available membranes. The flux of the produced cellulose acetat membrane was relative lower, namely app. 33 L/m2hr.  Turbidity, color and COD (chemical oxygen demand) of the wastewater could be reduced up to 80 - 96 percent, 77 - 99 percent, and 35 - 52 percent respectively, depending on wastewater characteristics, type of the membrane material, and the operating conditions. Based on the measured parameters it is possible to reuse or recycle the treated effluent of the pulp and paper industry by using the membrane filtration. Costs for the membrane material (polymer) were Rp 5.525,-/m2 for the cellulose acetate membrane and Rp 15.000,-/m2 for the chitosan membrane. The material cost for production of microbial cellulose acetate membrane seems to be too expensive, because one kg of dryed microbial cellulose self cost Rp 250.000,-, while commercial cellulose acetat cost only Rp 85.000,-/kg.Key words: cleaner production, membarne filtration, wastewater, pulp and paper industry

Abstract

ABSTRACTMuncar is one of a few major fish processing complex, which contributes significantly to the local as well as national economic development since most of the products is export oriented.  Majority of industry is characterized by the use of a relatively old type of machinery and facility and of improper waste control and management.  The fish processing as well as its related economic activity has now caused a serious environmental problem especially nuisance and water/coastal pollution.  The important environmental aspects identified include high process water consumption, less efficient use of energy and materials, and minimum implementation of industrial waste control and management.  In order to contribute to the government in establishing the framework of environmental management program in the area and in particular to assist the industry in improving its production and environmental performance, an integrated industrial pollution control strategy is proposed.  The strategy consists of input as well as output pollution control measures based on a comprehensive and reliable data of existing environmental performance.  The ultimate goal is to sustain and balance the environmental functions, namely economical, social and ecological functions.  The overall strategy exhibits a multi-year program implementation and involving many relevant government institutions and industries.  This paper describes the proposed strategy, which is now adopted by the government as a pollution control program of Muncar for the year 2007-2012.  At this present stage, the work focuses on potential implementation of input pollution control measures using cleaner production approach, such as waste prevention, reduction, reuse and recycle and their benefits to industry and environment. Keywords: cleaner production, fish processing, pollution control program, waste control and management.

Abstract

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to analyze the sugarcane agroindustry situational, human resources, and regulations to obtain new research on sugarcane agroindustry. The method carried out was by collecting 50 articles from 2002 - 2020 from indexed journals, theses, books. Articles were divided into three parts, namely sugarcane agroindustry with 14 articles, human resources with 19 articles and 17 regulations. In the VUCA era, we need skills, systems thinking skills, predictive abilities, and the ability to change quickly which is coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic conditions that accelerate the need for digitalization in the VUCA era. The results of the analysis show that the problem of lagging human resources in Eastern Indonesia is caused by a mismatch between labour users' needs and the availability of skills. The non-oil and gas processing industry sector provide the largest contribution to employment, one of which is the sugarcane industry. The sugarcane agroindustry problem was the large gap between supply of 2.17 million tons and demand of 6.6 million tons of which the shortfall of 4.43 million tons is met through imports of raw crystal sugar. The government's efforts to suppress imports by encouraging the private sector to establish new sugar factories outside Java and the expansion of existing sugar factories are accompanied by the preparation of human resources, so that a strategy for developing human resources that is competitive and able to adapt to the environment is needed. Keywords: eastern Indonesia, human resources, situational analysis, sugar cane agro-industry, strategy

Abstract

Dagger-tooth pike conger fish (Muraenesox cinerus) is known to have high edible portions and white meat, thus can be used as a surimi raw materials. However, the textural quality of this fish meat is relatively poor after washing process of surimi. This reserch was aimed to analyze the effects of TGase activator and STPP addition to increase the textural quality of surimi malong. The method used is a factorial experiment with the addition of activator TGase 0.2; 0.4 and 0.6 and STPP at concentrations 0; 0.2; 0.5 and 0.8. Parameters observed were texture profile analysis (TPA), water holding capacity (WHC) folding test, bite test, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results showed that the addition of STPP and activator TGase (Ca) has significant effect on increasing the hardness, fracturability, chewiness, gumminess, bite test and the folding test. Furthermore, microscopies structure (SEM) of malong surimi showed smooth and solid surfaces.
