Abstract

Crude palm oil is considered a strategic export commodity for Indonesia because of its contribution to the domestic economy and development so the government will always ensure that agreements related to CPO are included in the discussion of international trade agreements, including the IndonesiaEFTA CEPA. However, the agreement related to CPO in Indonesia-EFTA CEPA received an unfavorable response from several national NGOs in Switzerland who are members of The Swiss Palm Oil Coalition. They urged the government of Switzerland to exclude CPO from the free trade agreement. This research aimed to find out the involvement of NGO in Indonesia-EFTA negotiations on palm oil using the conceptual framework of economic diplomacy. The research method used in this paper is descriptive qualitative. The data collection methods used are interview methods, document-based methods, and internet-based methods with data analysis techniques consisting of data reduction, data presentation, and verification and conclusion drawing. Based on the results of the research, it can be concluded that the form of NGO involvement in the palm oil negotiations in the Indonesia-EFTA CEPA can be divided into two, namely NGOs as consulting partners, and NGOs as pressure groups. Abstract

This paper mainly tries to explore the new Model of Indonesian Economic Diplomacy to Non-Traditional Market by Setiawan & Sulastri (2020) with a study case of increasing vegetable oil export to Brazil. Brazil is one of the main targets of Indonesia’s export-development policy to non-traditional markets. The main concern of this paper is how economic diplomacy plays a role in reacting to the declining trend of vegetable oil exports as Indonesia’s leading export product to Brazil during 2016-2020. This paper is a descriptive qualitative research using simple trade calculations to justify Indonesian exports orientation. This paper found there are at least 6 driving factors for the implementation of economic diplomacy, 3 prominent actors for conducting economic diplomacy and 8 processes of economic diplomacy. Indonesia has successfully increased the export trend of vegetable oil to Brazil in the period of 2017-2021, however specific economic diplomacy efforts to encourage vegetable oil exports were identified as minimum.

ASEAN as a region has a huge opportunity to increase cooperation in the food sector, considering there are still large opportunities to add value to products. ASEAN is a region that produces various food commodities and also has various research and development centres for agricultural commodities. However, even though it has great opportunities, there are several challenges in realizing this dream, including infrastructure challenges and pandemic challenges.

Abstract

China's foreign policy towards Afghanistan in the 2014-2023 period has changed in a more proactive direction. Moreover, when the Taliban succeeded in taking power in Afghanistan, China decided to maintain its concession with the country that had replaced the regime that has shown a significant change in its foreign policy towards Afghanistan, after previously freezing diplomatic relations with the country when the Taliban's first occupation occurred in the 1996-2001 period. Therefore, this research is held to determine the reasons for China's foreign policy changes towards Afghanistan from 2014 to 2023, in terms of political-economic analysis. The theory used is foreign policy, using the Goldmann model and the Holsti model approach to identify changes in China's foreign policy towards Afghanistan. The method used in this research is explanatory with data sources obtained through interviews and literature study. In the data analysis stage, the authors sort out information that is relevant to the research topic, followed by the process of presenting data and drawing conclusions. The final results of this research show that Xi Jinping is the main actor behind changes in China's foreign policy towards Afghanistan since 2014. Securing China's economic interests in the development of Gwadar Port, a significant energy infrastructure project in BRI cooperation, became one of the main considerations for Xi Jinping to change China's foreign policy towards Afghanistan.

Renewable energy is one of the issues that is the focus of every country, not only developed and developing countries. The energy transition is the focus of state policy in creating renewable energy. SDG 7 is one of the references for each country to oversee the energy transition policy towards renewable energy. One of the efforts made in helping each country to achieve the SDG 7 target is through international cooperation. One form of international cooperation that pays attention to renewable energy is the G20. Through the G20, it is hoped that there will be a collaboration between countries in efforts to achieve SDG 7 targets. Therefore, this article aims to analyze the opportunities and challenges faced by the G20 in implementing commitments to achieve SDGs7. Literature studies originating from official documents, journal articles, and internet sources are used to further analyze the opportunities and challenges facing the G20. The results of the study show that the G20 cooperation provides opportunities for member countries to be able to work together in achieving SDG 7, but the different characteristics and resources between developed and developing countries are a challenge in the energy transition process towards renewable energy.

Abstract

The rapid change in the information technology in the age of Industry 4.0 requires the government to produce an innovative and competitive industrial policy in order to push for an independent economic development. Amids the trend of industry 4.0, states are faced with a challenge of advancing national industries, such as the energy, food and beverage, automotive, electronics, chemical, textile and textile products industries. Using literature review over a number of cases of industrial policies in East Asia, this article argues that a national interest-based industrial policy can be seen as an implementation of the so-called state defense. This is because industrial policy is the product of the thoughts of individual policy-makers who are also the citizens to whom the obligation of state defense applies. Thus, rather than simply asking the general individual citizens to do state defense, the state, represented by the individual policy-makers should also think of their policy in terms of state defense, that is the defense of public interest.

Abstract

Special Economic Zone (SEZ) has been one of the main drivers of economic development in many developing countries. One of the success stories of these SEZs is China. The giant country began its SEZs at the beginning of the 1980s and in several years, these SEZs have branched out elsewhere in the country. The ability of these SEZs to attract investors and spur economic growth in neighboring regions leading eventually to overall China’s economic success cannot be separated from the strong commitment of the Chinese government to developing these zones. However, commitment turns out not to be the only factor for the success of SEZ program. The ability to devise strategic plan considering all factors including the socio-cultural and geostrategic variables is also the key to the success. What China has done to develop its SEZs can be an invaluable lesson for Indonesia who aspires to develop its own SEZs in order to spur regional growth.
