Abstract

Teaching English as a foreign language in Indonesia has grown significantly. English is a prominent discipline at the university level. University students face problems in learning English. Some factors influence the success of learning, and one of them is motivation. Motivation is essential in education, and some research has investigated it. The study has shown that motivation is divided into intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Hence, this paper aims to critically review students ‘motivation in learning English in higher education in Indonesia. Four articles related to students' motivation were reviewed based on some steps: identifying the topic, the purpose of the study, determining resources, choosing the articles, reviewing the articles, and writing the summary. The results showed that every article found two types of motivation: intrinsic and extrinsic. The student's motivation at each university is different; it can be seen that the result of motivation is different. The most dominant motivation from the four articles is extrinsic motivation. The students’ external factors significantly impact learning. Besides, intrinsic motivation plays important factor too, and it has a good impact on learning. Therefore, identifying the student’s motivation can help the teacher design the teaching method to make successful learning.

Abstract

Writing a thesis necessitates the presentation of a compelling and well-written argument. The thesis should situate the research within the broader field of study and promote some contributions to the field. A student-writer needs to compose a thesis that reports and justifies the research conducted. This study explores how one undergraduate student-writer at an Indonesian university stages meanings to develop a thesis—as a macro genre, with sound and engaging arguments by using available linguistic resources. It employs tools of text analyses offered by Systemic Functional Linguistics to examine primarily the interpersonal zone of the arguments. This zone is crucial for a writer to stage meanings to engage with others and others’ knowledge in the field of study, utilizing sound arguments as she takes her stances in the academic community. The analysis focused on two key textual features: the organization of meanings to accomplish the social function of the thesis and the utilization of evaluative language resources to engage with others in the literature. This study involved a single respondent, an undergraduate student-writer, as its focus. The analyses indicate that this novice writer employs various linguistic resources to structure her texts in intricate ways. While her argument at the macro-level (the thesis) is structured relatively similarly to the typical thesis, significant differences emerge in her micro-level structure. This study revealed additional deviations in her use of linguistic resources for negotiating arguments at the sentence level (micro-level) and below level, including phrase and word levels.

Abstract

Numerous studies discuss assessment in academic texts, there remains a significant gap in the literature regarding the specific role of assessment resources in expressing attitudes within the discussion section of high-quality journal articles. This study explores the utilization of attitudinal expressions (the systems of Affect, Judgement, and Appreciation) in the discussion sections of high-quality journal articles. Employing a mixed-methods research approach, the study integrates qualitative and quantitative analyses to better understand evaluative linguistic practices in academic writing. Data were collected from five high-quality discussion sections published in 2024 in Q1 Scopus journals, including TESOL Quarterly, CALL-EJ, English Teaching & Learning, Australian Review of Applied Linguistics, and Asian-Pacific Journal of Second and Foreign Language Education. The qualitative analysis involved thematic coding and iterative development to identify and categorize attitudinal expressions, while the quantitative analysis utilized statistical techniques to measure the frequency and distribution of these expressions. Results indicated that the Judgement system was the most frequently used category (59.60%), followed by Appreciation system (37.50%) and Affect system (4.80%). The Affect system was primarily used to convey feelings and emotional responses, the Appreciation system was to convey evaluations of the research’s impact and significance. The findings suggest that academic authors strategically use evaluative language to assert research significance and engage critically with literature. Pedagogically, this study highlights the importance of teaching advanced academic writing skills, particularly the use of evaluative language, to enhance students’ ability to communicate their research effectively.

Abstract

This study observes the implementation of differentiated instructions (DI) with literary works to enhance students' engagement and reading comprehension in eighth-grade EFL classroom settings. The investigation employed an exploratory sequential mixed-method design with quantitative data collection through pre-tests and post-tests to assess students' reading comprehension, and a questionnaire was used to measure engagement. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews with the teacher to gain insights into DI with literary works implementation. The findings showed significant enhancement in students' engagement and reading comprehension after implementing DI with literary works. The questionnaire results indicated high levels of engagement, with mean scores of 3.32 for behavioral engagement, 3.34 for emotional engagement, and 3.10 for cognitive engagement, suggesting that students were actively involved in the learning process at multiple levels. Furthermore, the pre-test and post-test results showed a notable increase in reading comprehension, with the mean pre-test score at 66.17 and the mean post-test score at 77.46, reflecting an 11.29-point improvement. Moreover, the teacher's reflection highlighted its effectiveness in fostering a student-centered classroom, though the approach required considerable preparation and effort. This study implies that teachers need additional support and training to effectively design and implement DI in their classrooms. Furthermore, this research contributes to the integration of literary works as a medium for differentiated learning, so it provides a novel approach to enhance students' engagement and reading comprehension.

Abstract

The practice of ESP learning in maritime colleges is heavily depended on the coursebook. This study evaluates the coursebook 'Bahasa Inggris untuk Perwira Kapal Niaga' used by nautical cadets at Politeknik Bumi Akpelni. Using Daous and Celce-Murcia (1979) checklist, this study attempt to assess the alignment of coursebook content with International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards and the principles of English as an International Language (EIL). Using a qualitative research approach, the study combined content analysis of the coursebook focusing on aspects such as linguistic accuracy, relevance of topics, integration of language skills, and intercultural elements with interviews involving lecturers, officers, and cadets. The findings reveal that while the coursebook incorporates several IMO standards, such as the language and the content, more EIL principles must be covered, particularly regarding linguistic diversity and adaptability in real-world scenarios. For instance, the coursebook lacks exposure to varied English accents, non-native speaker interactions, and culturally diverse communication contexts that cadets may encounter in multinational crews. Interviews highlighted the book"™s strengths in providing foundational maritime terminology but noted its limitations in fostering practical cross-cultural communication skills. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating EIL principles with IMO standards in maritime English education to enhance the communicative competence of future seafarers. The recommendations, including revising the coursebook to incorporate more interactive and culturally diverse exercises, can significantly improve cadets"™ preparation for global maritime operations. This research contributes to the ongoing discourse on improving maritime English education and curriculum development.
