Abstract

Abstract    This research examines the psychological effects of language manipulation in George Orwell's Animal Farm using Van Dijk's sociocognitive approach. The study explores how language, through strategic manipulation, reinforces social control and psychological subjugation of characters at three levels: micro, meso, and macro. Using in-depth text reading and analysis methods, this study identifies linguistic structures, character interactions, and ideological constructions that contribute to the psychological effects on animals. At the micro level, word choice and sentence structure shape individual perceptions, instilling fear and encouraging obedience. At the meso level, social interactions between characters display emotional manipulation tactics that reinforce collective loyalty and obedience. The macro level highlights ideological changes in social structures, where language systematically conditions characters to accept unjust hierarchies as natural. These manipulative techniques cumulatively suggest that language functions as a tool of psychological control, influencing both individual cognition and collective behavior.

Abstract

This study examines the use of grammatical cohesion elements in oral narratives on podcasts, focusing on their contribution to the cohesiveness of oral discourse. This study focuses on its contribution to the cohesion of spoken discourse. It aims to identify and analyze the distribution of cohesion elements-reference, conjunction, substitution, and ellipsis-in the UR Cristiano. The analysis of the data shows that reference is the most frequently used cohesion element, accounting for 59% of the total occurrences, indicating its dominant role in connecting parts of the narrative and clarifying the flow of the conversation. Conjunctions followed with a significant percentage of 21%, assisting in the logical progression of ideas. Substitution and ellipsis appear with lower frequency, at 5% and 15% respectively, but still contribute by reducing repetition and enriching text variety. The findings highlight the multiple functions of grammatical cohesion elements in constructing cohesive oral narratives. This research provides insight into the structural strategies used in podcast discourse and confirms the importance of cohesion in easing listeners' understanding. Keywords: grammatical cohesion, oral narration, podcasts

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of lexical cohesion in spoken discourse, particularly within the digital sports media context of CBS Sports Golazo’s UCL Today Moments playlist. Lexical cohesion, as defined by Cutting (2005), encompasses devices such as repetition, synonymy, superordinate terms, and general words, which contribute to the coherence and clarity of spoken interaction. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzed five episodes from the playlist, totaling approximately 45 minutes of conversational data. The findings reveal that repetition is the most frequently used cohesion device (37%), followed by general words (25.9%), synonyms (24.1%), and superordinate terms (13%). These patterns highlight how speakers naturally employ lexical cohesion to emphasize meaning, avoid redundancy, and maintain discourse continuity in informal, spontaneous settings. The study also underscores the functional significance of lexical cohesion in managing the flow and coherence of talk show interactions. By focusing on two-way digital conversations, this research fills a gap in previous studies that primarily addressed one-directional or written discourse, offering new insights into how lexical cohesion operates in real-time, dialogic communication.
