Abstract

One of the influential factors in shaping professional health workers is the learning process during education. The professional attitude of pharmacy students can be modified with innovative learning methods. Inquiry-Based Learning (IBL) emphasizes students' involvement in systematically, critically, and logically gathering information so that they can formulate their findings. This study aims to determine the effect of IBL on pharmacist professional study program education students taking Pharmacy Communication and Health Promotion courses. This study employed quasi-experimental research with a group Pretest-Posttest Design. The study subjects were 40 students of the Pharmacist Professional Education Study Program. The students got learning interventions with IBL method. IBL stages consist of IBL orientation, problem formulation, hypothesis formulation, data collection, hypothesis testing, conclusion formulation, and learning evaluation. Assessment instrumentation included pretests, posttests, reports, and student satisfaction questionnaires. Pretest and posttest data were statistically analyzed with SPSS. The implementation of IBL resulted in an increase in mean scores from 59.82 on the pretest to 92.83 on the posttest. There is a statistically significant difference between these results (Asymp. Sig 0.000). The proportion of student reports rated as excellent 70%, good 20%, and sufficient 5%. Student satisfaction with the learning method reached an average of 93.94%. Inquiry-based learning increases the knowledge of Pharmacist Professional Education Study Program students in the Pharmacy Communication and Health Promotion courses.

Abstract

Secondary metabolite content and extract characterization can be influenced by the solvent used in the extraction process. The content of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of Labisia pumila leaves can be influenced by solvents. This research aims to determine three extracts' antioxidant activity and total phenolic content using different solvents. Fresh L. pumila leaf samples were cleaned with running water and then dried using a drying cabinet. The dried leaves are then powdered and extracted using distilled water, 70% ethanol, and 96% ethanol. Extraction with distilled water using the infusion method and ethanol using maceration. Next, the solvent obtained was evaporated using a rotary evaporator and oven until a dry extract was obtained. Total phenolic content was determined using the UV-Vis spectrophorometric method with the Folin-Ciocalteu reagent. The standard used is error-free. Antioxidant activity was determined using the DPPH method with a UV-Vis spectrophotometer, then the IC50 value was calculated. The research showed that the total phenolic content of the distilled water extract was 6.437 ± 0.177 w/w GAE, the 70% ethanol extract was 8.377 ± 0.079 w/w GAE, and the 96% ethanol extract was 17.387 ± 0.621% w/w GAE. Antioxidant activity is known to have an IC50 value of distilled water extract of 59,716 ppm, 70% ethanol extract of 50,543 ppm, and ethanol extract of 43,520 ppm. The conclusion of the research is that of the three extracts, it is known that the antioxidant activity is the strongest, and the total phenolics are the highest in the 96% ethanol extract.

Abstract

Sea pandan (Pandanus odorifer) is used in traditional medicine in India. Sea pandan is efficacious in treating pain, parasites, digestive, liver, and cognitive disorders. Sea pandan is found in coastal areas in South Kalimantan. Sea pandan contains flavonoid compounds that have the potential to be antimicrobials. This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of sea pandan leaf extract. The study began with sample preparation, which included washing the leaves, drying them using an oven, refining the particle size, extracting 70% ethanol, and evaporating the solvent until a thick extract was obtained. Total flavonoid levels in sea pandan leaf extract were determined using the colourimetric method using quercetin standards. Antimicrobial testing was conducted using the diffusion method at concentrations of 30%, 40%, and 50% against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. The positive control used was chloramphenicol. The determination of the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values ??was carried out using the dilution method. The results showed that sea pandan leaf extract contains phenolics, flavonoids, saponins, steroids, and tannins. The total flavonoid content in sea pandan leaf extract is 10.01% w/w equivalent of quercetin. The antimicrobial activity of sea pandan leaf extract against Staphylococcus aureus bacteria is 10.15 - 25.36 mm, while against Escherichia coli in the range of 8.15 - 23.16 mm. Ethanol extract of sea pandan leaves at a concentration of 50% is included in the very strong category in inhibiting Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Ethanol extract of sea pandan leaves has an MIC value of 7.5% on Staphylococcus aureus and 15% on Escherichia coli. MBC of sea pandan extract is 15% on Escherichia coli bacteria. This study concludes that the ethanol extract of sea pandan leaves has antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (bacteriostatic) and Escherichia coli (bactericidal).
