Abstract

The local community’s culture has been recognized as playing an essential role in achieving food security. This study attempts to demystify a cultural tradition among an Indonesian agriculture society, called Mekambare, that plays such a role in sustainable agricultural management. It was conducted in East Kolaka Regency, an area dominated by lowland rice farmers. Framed in a qualitative method, this study used observation, in-depth interviews, and document studies as techniques of data collection. The results showed that Mekambare played a crucial role in forming social solidarity among lowland rice farming communities. Through Mekambare, farming communities build mutual cooperation and support one another in overcoming challenges related to supplying food demands. This social solidarity is manifested in the exchange of food commodities, social support, and the dissemination of traditional knowledge in agricultural management. With Mekambare, the lowland rice farming communities maintain the balance of the agricultural ecosystem by utilizing natural predators, utilizing organic fertilizers from livestock manure, and implementing integrated weed control. This research can make a positive contribution to efforts to achieve sustainable food security and the welfare of farming communities in East Kolaka Regency.

Abstract

This Community Service Activity (PKM) was carried out in the form of a workshop with the theme of Optimizing Farmers' Social Capabilities in Food Disaster Mitigation in Matang Danau Village, Sambas Regency. The background of this activity stems from Indonesia's condition as an agrarian country that still relies on agriculture, especially rice, as the backbone of food supply. Although national rice production in January–June 2025 increased significantly to 19.16 million tons, food security still faces major challenges due to climate change, crop failures, and food distribution inequalities. The purpose of this activity was to increase farmers' understanding of the concepts of national and family food security, as well as to identify and optimize their social capabilities for food disaster mitigation. The workshop was held on August 23, 2025, and was attended by 30 participants consisting of farmers. The methods used included a pre-test, material delivery, group discussions, social capability mapping, and a post-test to measure the increase in participants' knowledge. The evaluation results showed an average score increase from 52 on the pre-test to 82 on the post-test, or an increase of 30 points (57.7%). In addition, participants successfully identified four main pillars of social capabilities in Matang Danau Village, namely social capital, local knowledge, social institutions, and social solidarity. Group discussions revealed various practices such as mutual cooperation in repairing irrigation systems, rice barns, the use of terajoong, and the tradition of sharing grain during crises. In conclusion, this workshop succeeded in increasing participants' understanding and awareness that social capabilities are an important force that can be mobilized to deal with the risk of food crises. Recommended follow-up actions include the establishment of a Resilient Food Farmers Forum, the revitalization of village granaries, the strengthening of the role of youth and women, and ongoing assistance from the government and universities. Keywords: food security, social capabilities, farmers, disaster mitigation, Matang Danau Village

Abstract

Packaging design is a crucial aspect of product development because it plays a significant role in enhancing product appeal and expanding market reach. However, many businesses, particularly micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), still face limitations in comprehensive packaging design. This community service activity aims to improve the graphic design skills of members of the Putra Farm Company Farmers Group in Tambun Raya Village, Central Kalimantan, through training on the use of the Canva application in creating product packaging designs. The method used was a participatory approach through the stages of problem identification, training material development, training implementation, evaluation, mentoring, and documentation. The training results showed a significant increase in participants' ability to use Canva, with all participants able to produce product packaging designs independently. Improvements were also seen in their understanding of the importance of packaging in marketing and the competitiveness of local products. This activity has had a positive impact on market expansion and increasing the selling value of the farmer group's products. This program demonstrates that utilizing simple and accessible graphic design technology like Canva can be an effective solution to support the economic independence of rural communities.

Abstract

This article reviews border issues related to threats, dynamics, problems, and nationalism of the Indonesian people living on the border of West Kalimantan. The dynamics and complex problems on the Indonesia-Malaysia border have created various conflicts and struggles for citizenship in both countries. In addition, kinship in the two countries has a different impact on nationalism, as people on the border in the PLBN zone are more controllable from a socio-economic point of view. Meanwhile, people living in non-PLBN zones tend to have many problems, such as poor welfare and infrastructure development. As a result, the Indonesian people, bordered by the Non-PLBN zone, seem to prefer a country that provides welfare. This study uses the civic engagement and securitization theory to analyze how these issues occur in the Indonesian-Malaysian border community. This study shows a critical review of the picture related to threats, dynamics, nationalism, and strategies of local communities at the border. In the case study, issues concerning the dynamics of local border residents in Indonesia are themes that deserve more attention from various parties, from academics to practitioners. Therefore, with empirical evidence from this study, it is hoped that researchers, academics, practitioners, and politicians will be able to respond wisely to cross-border dynamics
