Abstract

This paper presents a novel Modified Multilevel Inverter (MMLI) topology to reduce Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in photovoltaic (PV) systems. Unlike conventional Cascaded H-Bridge Inverters, the proposed MMLI achieves higher output voltage levels using fewer switching components by optimizing the arrangement of voltage sources and switches. A Boost converter integrated with Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) further enhances power conversion efficiency and system stability. This specific configuration has not been previously explored, offering a more effective solution for THD mitigation. Simulations conducted in MATLAB/Simulink demonstrate the inverter’s performance, with the 5-level MMLI achieving a THD of 28.99% and the 9-level configuration reducing it to 18.15%. These results confirm the superiority of the proposed topology in improving power quality and reducing system complexity. Moreover, the design eliminates the need for external filters, making it a cost-effective and practical option for grid-connected PV applications.

Abstract

The detection of high impedance faults (HIFs) plays a crucial role in modern active distribution systems to prevent risks like equipment failures, fire incidents, and disruptions in service, while maintaining a stable power supply. HIFs are challenging to detect due to their low-magnitude and fluctuating fault currents, often falling below the detection thresholds of conventional protection mechanisms. These undetected faults can result in significant safety hazards, economic losses, and compromised system reliability. This study presents an enhanced HIF detection method leveraging differential energy indicators derived from positive-sequence current components during fault events. The proposed approach improves fault detection accuracy and discriminates HIFs from nonfault transients, including load switching, capacitor switching, and nonlinear load effects. The method was validated through simulations on adapted IEEE-13 and IEEE-34 bus systems distribution networks with high distributed generation (DG) penetration. Results demonstrated faster response times (

Abstract

olar energy, accepted as an alternative energy source, is attracting commercial interest and scholars and researchers for improving efficiency and lowering the losses within the system. One of these significant losses is due to partial and complex shading. This study concentrates on reducing losses to enhance the efficiency of solar systems. Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPTT) uses several alternative algorithms for efficient operations. We have selected four algorithms supporting MPPT, namely P&O, PSO, Adaptive cuckoo, and Dragonfly. These algorithms are applied on photovoltaic (PV) systems in four different scenarios: uniform irradiance, partial shading, complex partial shading, and multiple local maximum power points. According to this study, results show that the algorithms' performance vary significantly based on these scenarios. It has been shown that PSO has the longest tracking time compared to other but tracks the maximum power best when exposed to uniform irradiance. In contrast, DFO takes the shortest tracking time and performs best in I-V curves but do not have a maximum power point at the knee. Both adaptive cuckoo and PSO perform well in tracking the global maximum power point, particularly in partial shadings. The study provides insights into the strengths and weaknesses of each algorithm in different scenarios and can guide the selection of an appropriate algorithm for a given PV system.

Abstract

The PLN officer in charge of recording kWh meters is sometimes unable to photograph them because men discovered that the houses were unoccupied and their fences were locked. Due to these circumstances, the calculation of the current month’s electricity consumption is equated with the previous month, and customers can be harmed. The purpose of this research is to take a physical photo of the kWh meter showing the electrical power consumption and send it to WhatsApp. Firstly, it needs to set the timer on the DS3231, which determines the date for activating the esp32-cam to take kWh meter pictures and upload them to the server. Next, esp8255 downloads those photos from the server. Finally, esp8255 sends them to the WhatsApp application. In this study, the results were obtained in the form of an Internet of Things (IoT)-based smart home device system. The WhatsApp application is a notification media, taking pictures of analog kWh meters in 3–5 seconds with throughput, reliability, and availability values of 189 bps, 96%, and 95.97%, respectively.
