Abstract

Until recent decades, the effort on diminishing students’ feeling of anxiety and less self-efficacy toward the writing activities in academic writing course still becomes a great concern for the teachers or practitioners of writing skill especially when dealing with students from multilingual society. These students, who learn English as a foreign language, often demonstrate the influence of their first language when composing a writing, even in a simple paragraph. Facing this situation, the teachers are forced to give attention more to students’ grammatical composition, and as a result of this most of the students give excessive attention only to revise the grammatical mistakes. Based on this situation, they develop “mental block” towards writing and have less interest in writing. To deal with this situation, many studies suggest that teachers need to foster students’ motivation since it is as crucial as developing students’ writing skills through practice. Hence, this paper aims to describe the effectiveness of giving journal writing task and providing comments to students’ writing in the task as a simple but useful way to ignite students’ motivation in writing. The object of the research is the students of academic writing course in Faculty of Cultural Studies of Mulawarman University Samarinda. List of questions were given to the students after they experienced the task to figure out how much the task and the comments influence students’ motivation in writing

Abstract

This article discussed the representation of Chinese society as portrayed in IP Man 4: The Finale movie. Furthermore, the representation of the Other towards the Chinese character using Macfie's representation theory, while Murphy's characterization theory was used to analyze the struggle waged by the Chinese society. The reasons the researcher chose this movie, because (1) IP Man 4: The Finale movie is one of the movies that have just aired in 2020, (2) no one has analyzed this movie using representation theory, and (3) also until now there are still many cases where there are still superiority and inferiority between East and West that still exist and cannot be solved. In this research, the research design used was qualitative by using a qualitative descriptive analysis approach. This research reveals that the representation of Chinese society in IP Man 4: The Finale movie is aberrant, despotic, inferior, passive, feminine, backward, and inauthentic. The findings show that the struggle of Chinese society was characterized by three significant ways, namely: The past life (the character's past story), the character's speech (conversation and mind), and mannerism (reaction or action). By looking at representation theory, we can understand that the term oriental culture aims to prevent the East from not getting a negative connotation. This term is not a justification for blaming something that inaccurate statement, but rather an effort to keep the Eastern nation honorable and dignified.

Abstract

Collaborative learning is an activity to work in small groups or teams that allows students to develop mutual cooperation in learning. This study aims to highlight the effectiveness of collaborative learning in improving student academic achievement. It was carried out with a quantitative method and the pretest-posttest experimental design was applied. There were sixty students participated in this study. To assess students’ achievement, online grammar pretest and posttest were distributed. In addition, collaborative learning questionnaire was administered to elicit students’ responses towards collaborative learning. Based on paired-samples t test result, it was found that the pretest and posttest mean scores were significantly different (t(59) = -5.977, p < .05).  This indicated that there was a higher mean score of posttest after the implementation of collaborative activities. Most students responded that collaborative learning activities improved academic performance and team work helped them to receive input from their peers as well as provide better result in completing the tasks than working individually.  It is recommended that various collaborative activities should be designed to motivate university students in learning grammar.
