Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the types of causes of frustration and defensive behaviours on Josephine’s character of Crooked House novel. There are two theories used to answer these questions such as frustrations and defensive behaviours by Krech et al. and characterization by Reaske. This study uses narrations and dialogues as the data which are taken from Crooked House novel by Agatha Christie. The results of this study find that Josephine experiences two types of causes of frustrations and conducts three types of defensive behaviours. The causes of frustrations are Josephine’s biological limitations as twelve years old girl and her social environment of living only in the Crooked House. In order to persist her existence after receiving the hard blows from her frustrations, Josephine conducts three forms of defensive behaviours which are aggression, autism, and identification. The conclusions show that Josephine’s desire to learn ballet plays the biggest role for her to experience frustrations events and due to this unfulfilled desire too that she performs the most extreme form of defensive behaviour of killing people in the Crooked House.

Abstract

This research analyzes anxiety and defense mechanism by Sigmund Freud in The Farewell Film. The objective of this study is to describe how anxiety and defense mechanism portrayed through Wang as the main character in the film. This research uses qualitative design. The data are dialogues and scenes that are related to anxiety and defense mechanism. The data are analyzed by using Freud’s theory and the process of data analysis is using Miles and Huberman’s theory. Based on the result of this study, the researchers make two points. Two theories are presented by the main character. Anxiety was displayed by the character. Billi's grandmother, who was diagnosed with cancer, could not live much longer. Defense mechanisms include regression, rationalization, sublimation, and repression. Due to her anxiety, Billi applied various defenses attitudes unconsciously. Unconsciously, Billi suppresses his discomfort in many ways, including having fun, thinking rationally, and carrying out useful social activities. The second reason is that Billi uses the defenses to maintain her relationship with her family as well as to counter anxiety. As a result, Billi suppressed her id in order to maintain good relations with her family by suppressing her personal interests. Keywords: Anxiety, Defense mechanism, Psychoanalysis

Abstract

This research discusses the needs of a character named Brianna Jackson in On the Come Up novel by Angie Thomas. The theory applied for the study is the hierarchy of needs theory proposed by Maslow and characterization theory by Kenan. Under the umbrella of qualitative research, this study uses the psychological criticism approach to find out whether Brianna is able to fulfill all her needs and her character portrayal based on how she fulfills her needs. Living as a struggling sixteen year-old girl always challenges Brianna to attain even her most basic needs. The analysis reveals that Brianna manages to satisfy her physiological need, safety need, love and belongingness need, and esteem need. However, her self-actualization need is failed to be fulfilled due to some of Brianna’s actions being unfit as a self-actualizing person. Out of fifteen required characteristics in self-actualization, there are only five of them that are found in Brianna. The other eight characteristics were unfulfilled since they contradicted with Brianna’s behavior. Meanwhile, the other two were not reflected. Nonetheless, the exploration of her actions in fulfilling her needs also unveils the way Brianna’s character is portrayed in the novel. It turns out that Brianna is an argumentative, impulsive, confident, and determined character who always tries her best in securing her needs no matter how hard things get for her.

Abstract

This research analyzed the conversation of the characters using adjacency pairs and insertion sequences. The purposes of the research are to identify the types of adjacency pairs and to find out the types of insertion sequences in the Big Hero 6 film. The approach used in this research is conversation analysis, specifically using the adjacency pairs theory of Paltridge and the insertion sequence theory of Levinson. This research is classified into descriptive qualitative research, while the data are words and sentences in the conversation. Based on the result of the analysis, the researchers found seven types of adjacency pairs in the film. The seven types are complaint-apology, greeting-greeting, offer-acceptance, assessment-agreement, blame-denial, request-agreement, and question-answer sequence. This research also found two types of insertion sequences which are request-question-answer-acceptance and repair sequence. The result of the research showed that Baymax can adapt to the human environment with their limited language by hearing explanations given by the other characters in the film. This research revealed that the use of adjacency pairs can make the conversation clearer and insertion sequence can help to understand the meaning of the expression in words by the explanation.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aimed to analyze the personality dynamics of Phil Burbank, the main character in the film The Power of the Dog, through the lens of Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalysis theory on the concept of the tripartite principle of the psyche: id, ego, and superego. The 2021 film The Power of the Dog, written and directed by Jane Campion, and its script were used as the primary data source. This research employed a qualitative method and a psychoanalysis approach to examine how these three components of personality interacted within Phil Burbank. Phil Burbank was portrayed as a dominant masculine figure who harbored deep and complex inner conflicts, based on the categorization of the situation, identified in Phil’s aggressive behaviour and his need to dominate those around him, reflecting unsublimated unconscious drives. The ego was observed in his attempts to conform to social norms and preserve his masculine image despite internal conflict with his desires. The superego was manifested through moral judgments and efforts to uphold internalized morality, shaping his attitudes and worldview. The results indicated that the id was the most dominant structure with eight data, followed by ego with four data, and superego with two data. Concluded from this research was the idea that Phil’s inability to reconcile his desires (id), his social façade (ego), and his moral conscience (superego) led to his self-destruction. This psychological imbalance was reflected in emotional instability, toxic relationships, and ultimately, his death.
