Abstract

This study analyses the boarding school management strategy in developing student character at State Islamic Senior High School (MAN) 2 Tanjung Pura. Character education is a crucial response to globalisation's moral crisis and challenges. In Islamic education, the boarding school system is a strategic platform for consistently and sustainably nurturing moral and spiritual values. The research collected data through observation, interviews, and documentation using a descriptive qualitative approach. A total of 32 students and 15 staff members participated in the study. Data were analysed through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing stages. The findings reveal that character development is carried out through empathetic parenting, exemplary behaviour from teachers and caregivers, and senior student mentoring programs. Students and staff reported that these strategies foster discipline, independence, and responsibility. Supporting factors include consistent role modelling and structured daily routines in the dormitory. However, challenges such as the adjustment period for new students and a shortage of mentors still exist. This study supports the idea that Islamic boarding schools' humanistic and participatory management strategy creates a positive educational environment that encourages holistic character formation. These results are in line with previous research by Hasan (2021), Suryani (2020), Ma’arif (2019), Zuhri (2018), and Fadhilah (2017), who also found that well-managed dormitory systems significantly influence student moral development.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of the madrasah principal’s leadership in shaping students’ social character at MTsN 4 Mandailing Natal. The research addresses the problem of how leadership practices influence the development of core social values in students, aiming to explore the strategies and impacts of principal-led character education. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observations, and analysis of school documents. The findings highlight the principal’s role as a role model, policy maker, and facilitator in embedding Islamic values across educational practices. Key social character traits, politeness, responsibility, discipline, compassion, and cooperation—are nurtured through religious activities, student empowerment, and collective engagement within a spiritually enriched school culture. This research contributes to understanding leadership-based character education and offers practical implications for educational leaders in Islamic contexts.

Abstract

Character education plays an essential role in shaping students' character in line with the Rahmatan Lil' Alamin student profile within Islamic educational institutions, particularly madrasahs that integrate religious values into daily learning practices. However, its implementation still faces challenges related to consistency, value integration, and effectiveness within the boarding school environment, requiring a comprehensive analysis of planning, implementation, and evaluation processes. This study aims to analyze the planning, implementation, evaluation, as well as supporting and inhibiting factors of character education at MA Al-Azhar Ash-Syarif North Sumatra. This study employs a qualitative field research design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving key informants, school activities, and institutional records. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that character education planning is conducted comprehensively through needs identification and value integration in madrasah programs. Implementation occurs within the boarding school ecosystem through habituation, role modeling, and supervision. Evaluation is carried out using assessment instruments, classroom observations, digital report cards, and feedback from students and parents. Supporting factors include a strong religious culture, adequate infrastructure, and solid institutional management, while challenges include the influence of digital technology and variations in parenting patterns. The study concludes that the implementation of character education at MA Al-Azhar Ash-Syarif North Sumatra is effective in realizing the Rahmatan Lil' Alamin student profile through a structured, sustainable system. The study contributes theoretically to character education in Islamic boarding school contexts, while practically providing insights for strengthening integrated character education systems and highlighting the need for institutional support in managing digital influence and parental involvement.
