Abstract

The availability of the lesson plans as organized guidance for teachers is critical in achieving the objectives of English Language Teaching (ELT) in policy decisions, curriculum planning, and classroom implementations. However, it is unavoidable if teachers experience difficulties generating lesson plans, necessitating specific strategies to deal with the situation. This study aims to examine the challenges faced by state Islamic secondary school English mentor teachers in implementing lesson plans and the strategies they utilized to overcome those challenges. This study employed a qualitative research design utilizing data purposively gathered from the semi-structured interviews involving five English school mentor teachers from State Islamic Secondary School No. 4 in Banda Aceh. The findings revealed that teachers’ most significant challenges in implementing lesson plans were time constraints, format changes, administrative burdens, and students’ lack of interest. The study also found out that attending the MGMP (Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran, or the Teachers Professional Development Forum), using a guidebook, asking for advice from colleagues, and using the internet as a learning resource are common strategies the teachers used in overcoming their challenges. It is expected that the impact of this study provides a practical and critical reflection to develop a more realistic and workable ELT lesson plan implementation for mentor teachers amidst their demanding roles and increased administrative responsibilities. This study also recommends that university/faculty administrators and lecturers be more attentive to courses related to lesson plan design, such as English Curriculum Design, English Course Design, and Micro Teaching.

Abstract

This study was designed to discover the types of conversational implicature and the non-observance maxim of cooperative principles expressed by the characters in the Kingdom of Heaven movie script by William Monahan. The theory of Grice was applied to analyze the conversational implicature, and the qualitative approach is used to explain the conversational implicatures. After analyzing the movie, we discovered particularized implicatures as the most frequent conversational implicatures in the movie script with 14 occurrences, followed by six occurrences of generalized implicatures. The finding also revealed that the frequent use of flouting maxim of quantity occurred more frequent with 14 out of the total 20 excerpts, with violating maxim found only three times in the movie script. From this study, both findings suggested the reason behind the frequent use of flouting maxim compare to violating maxim in conversational implicature is because the speaker assumes that they will be in a safe position, and then expect the hearer to understand their points, as the speaker did not intentionally manipulate or mislead the hearer.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study investigates the categorization of cultural materials and the sense of the culture of two "Bahasa Inggris 2017 updated edition" English textbooks for grades X and XI in senior high school in Indonesian secondary education. This study examines which cultures are exemplified in the textbooks and how they are characterized. The study's design follows a qualitative descriptive design through content analysis. Both the "categories of culture" approach of Cortazzi and Jin (1999) and the "sense of culture" approach of Adaskou, Britten, and Fahsi (1990) were used in the present study. The data showed that the Bahasa Inggris tenth-grade textbook focused more on source culture instead of the target culture and international culture. Nonetheless, in the Bahasa Inggris eleventh-grade textbook, the target culture is more dominant than the source and international cultures. In both books, the pragmatic sense dominated the aesthetic, semantic, and social sense. This study also uncovered an imbalance in the number of cultural categories exhibited. This study proposes that writers of EFL textbooks should accommodate a balanced representation of source culture, target culture, and international culture, as well as provide an excellent four-cultural sense in the textbooks.ABSTRAKPenelitian ini menyelidiki kategorisasi bahan budaya dan pemahaman budaya dari dua buku teks bahasa Inggris "Bahasa Inggris 2017 edisi terbaru" untuk kelas X dan XI di sekolah menengah atas dalam pendidikan menengah di Indonesia. How to Cite: Akmal, S., Nashriyah, Fauza, N., Chamisah, Syahabuddin, K. Abstract

In order to implement educational policies during the Covid-19 emergency period, the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia released Circular Letter 4 of 2020 on March 24, 2020. Universitas Islam Negeri-Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh has also been affected by Covid-19, and they have decided that all academic activities and faculty services be completed online by all students. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of student academic services during Covid-19 and the factors that hinder and facilitate that effectiveness. In this study, we used a descriptive qualitative methodology with in-depth interviews conducted with the purposively selected informants. The findings demonstrated that, despite the availability of online resources, the effectiveness of student academic services during the Covid-19 pandemic was still insufficient. Goal attainment, integrity, and adaptation are three examples of service effectiveness metrics that have not been met. Despite this, service providers continue to work on enhancing their offerings, particularly in light of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Abstract

Banda Aceh is the provincial capital of Aceh and has been declared as an economic mobility and education center. This period was marked by the establishment of several public and private schools, as well as public and private universities. Education is a process of learning that aims to develop a generation to be more reliable and capable. Facilities and infrastructure are critical components of education. An essential educational facility for both students and educators is the library. As a public institution, the library must comply with applicable rules and regulations namely UU No. 25 of 2009. The purpose of this study is to establish public services at the UIN Ar-Raniry and USK libraries. This research employs a qualitative approach. The findings indicated that the two libraries were extremely capable of providing services to these public institutions. Numerous supporting aspects contribute to the creation of satisfactory service. Additionally, there are various obstacles to the implementation of public services. Minor errors that occur in each institution are a constant source of progress that must be developed over time. This study concludes that public services provided to UIN Ar-Raniry and USK libraries have begun to show results in compliance with UU No. 25 of 2009. However, further efforts are required on the side of the library's internal and external stakeholders to ensure that the implementation of future services sincerely achieves the law's standardization

Abstract

Teachers’ practices and beliefs about instructional media are crucial in teaching English, as they can motivate students’ enthusiasm if teachers use them engagingly. Despite their importance, teachers’ practices and beliefs regarding instructional media in Islamic secondary schools in Indonesia have received less attention. The purpose of this qualitative study was to discover how teachers used instructional media and their beliefs towards employing it to teach English. We gathered information from two female English teachers at selected Islamic junior high schools in Aceh, Indonesia through observations and interviews. The results revealed that teachers utilized photos, whiteboards, overhead projectors, and flashcards to teach English. In their English foreign language classrooms, they used instructional media to facilitate students’ learning by explaining the materials, and giving exercises. Teachers believed that instructional media could help boost students’ interest, facilitate the learning process, and promote the achievement of teaching and learning objectives. They specified that curriculum and topic lessons are essential factors to consider when selecting instructional media for teaching English. They alleged that students’ feedback, participation in seminars or workshops, self-discovery, and new curricula could all have an impact on their beliefs. Future research should look into potentially more comprehensive accounts of teachers’ practices and beliefs about instructional media in varied secondary school contexts as well as how engaged students in more interactive classroom activities.

Abstract

The Ombudsman of the Republic of Indonesia oversees public services, particularly timely responses to reports. Since 2018, the Aceh Representative of the Indonesian Ombudsman handled 150 reports. It is interesting to investigate how well the Ombudsman dealt with these reports. This study examines the effectiveness of the Aceh Representative of the Indonesian Ombudsman in handling reported maladministration cases using a qualitative approach. The research data were gathered through interviews and document reviews by referring to Steer’s (1976) formulation of organization effectiveness, which includes productivity, adaptability, communication, job satisfaction, and human resources. The productivity, communication, and flexibility indicators are adequately effective, although not directly involved in handling cases. The handling is limited to coordinative meetings with local authorities assigned to resolve the problems. However, the findings also reveal that job satisfaction indicators are ineffective, as evidenced by the absence of community satisfaction survey findings to assess their performance. Likewise, the results on the resource indicator were ineffective since the human resources were not allocated according to the Aceh Ombudsman’s workload. Therefore, this study provides a meaningful contribution to improving the quality of services in maladministration handling by the Aceh Ombudsman Office in the future to cases reported by the citizens.
