Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the factors influencing individuals to be involved in informal sectors in Indonesia. The factors include gender, marital status, age, education, migration, employment type, working hours, and income. Analyzing SAKERNAS 2020 data released by BPS using logistic regression method, this study found that all these factors have a significant influence on the employment sector (both informal and formal). The subjects’ characteristics such as being female, having particular marital status, aged over 40, educated at the senior high school level or lower, non-migrant status, involvement in agricultural business, working more than 8 hours a day, and earning a monthly income of 5 million rupiah, were found to influence individual preference of working in informal sectors. The study showed inequalities and gaps among individuals working in informal sectors in Indonesia, highlighting the need for the policymakers’ intervention to provide stimuli that can improve the welfare of informal economic actors and provide them with social protection.

Abstract

Disasters, both natural and non-natural, can cause a severe impact on every life aspects in a country, including the economic aspect. In Indonesia, as a reaction of deteriorating economic conditions caused by disasters, households are often forced to adjust the declining of their real income by taking out their children from school thereby they can send them to work as a household buffer to shocks. This paper aims to analyze the impact of the natural disaster damage on the number of child labor and the differences of these impacts between urban and rural areas. By using cross section data from the fifth wave Indonesia Family Life Survey collected in 2014, we find that there is a positive relation between the natural disaster damage and the number of child labor, and then a significant difference between impacts in urban and rural areas. Policy implications of the findings are provided.

Abstract

This research analyzes the effect of pre-employment training and general training on the income of female informal sector workers in East Java. This research uses a multiple linear regression analysis method with data obtained from the results of the 2023 National Labor Force Survey (SAKERNAS). The research results show that pre-employment training has a positive but not significant effect on income, while general training has a positive and significant effect on income. The conclusion of this research shows that these findings are in line with human capital theory which states that investment in training can increase skills and income. Based on the findings of this research, the government is advised to improve the quality and sustainability of existing training programs and provide post-training assistance to ensure optimal application of skills. For further research, it is recommended to explore other factors that can influence workers' income and analyze the effect of training on opportunities to get a job.

Abstract

Labor productivity is a major factor in measuring economic growth in a country. According to Human Capital theory and Efficiency Wage Theory, one of the factors that affect labor productivity is education, health, and wages. However, this is not in line with the phenomenon that exists in DIY Province, where with a high level of education and health still makes DIY province as the province with the lowest productivity level in Java Island. This study aims to analyze the effect of education, health, and wages on labor productivity of districts/cities in DIY Province. This research uses an associate quantitative approach with secondary data obtained from the Ministry of Manpower of the Republic of Indonesia and the Central Bureau of Statistics of Yogyakarta Special Region, 2013-2023. Data analysis used multiple linear regression (panel data) and processed with e-views. The results of this study show that education and wage variables have a positive and significant impact, while health variables have a negative and insignificant effect on labor productivity. However, all three variables have a significant effect partially.

This study aims to determine the influence of Physical Special Allocation Funds and Regional Expenditures in the Education Sector on increasing Economic Growth and the Quality of Human Resources, focusing on the education sector as one of the main pillars of development. The methodology used in this research is panel data regression analysis by combining cross-section data from 38 districts/cities with time-series data for three years, namely from 2020 to 2022. The findings of this research show that special physical allocation funds have a positive and significant effect on economic growth and the quality of human resources. In contrast, regional spending in the education sector has a considerable influence, with a negative correlation between financial development and the quality of human resources. The implications of this research provide policymakers insight regarding optimizing public funds' use to support equality. Abstract

Abstract

Despite the industrial sector's critical role in Indonesia's economy, many workers remain trapped in low-welfare categories, influenced by factors such as insufficient access to digital resources, urban-rural disparities, and persistent gender and marital status inequalities. Understanding the determinants of labor welfare in this sector is essential to effectively addressing these disparities. This research examines labor welfare in Indonesia's industrial sector and identifies the key determinants by analyzing individual characteristics. The study uses generalized ordered logit, categorizing three welfare groups: those who are poor and earn below the minimum wage, those who are not poor but earn below the minimum wage, and those who are not poor and earn above the minimum wage. Data from the Survei Sosial Ekonomi Nasional (SUSENAS) provides a comprehensive foundation for the analysis. The findings reveal that internet utilization, urban residency, and age significantly increase the likelihood of being in the highest welfare category, with internet users, urban dwellers, and older workers having higher probabilities of better welfare outcomes. Gender also plays a role, as men are more likely than women to be in the higher welfare categories. Married individuals, conversely, have lower odds of being in higher welfare categories, while education shows no significant impact on welfare status. These findings suggest that enhancing internet access and digital inclusion across the workforce could significantly improve labor welfare, particularly for industrial workers. Additionally, targeted policies addressing the unique challenges of married workers and promoting regional economic equity could ensure broader and more inclusive improvements in worker well-being.
