Abstract

Malang is a thriving city and destination of migration from rural areas. Vehicle ownership is one indicator of prosperity, but it has a negative effect on city traffic. In 2017 the city of Malang was the third most traffic jam city in Indonesia. This study used the 2016 National Socioeconomic Survey and aimed to see the influence of urbanization and socioeconomic conditions on the preference of owning a vehicle. Income is considered as a budget constraint to the ability to buy a vehicle and is related to the socio-economic conditions of each person. This study used an ordered probit method to measure the level of prosperity with 4 levels of output; those who have no vehicle, who owned at least one motorcycle, who owned at least one car, and who owned at least one car and one motorcycle. The result of the study showed that migration has a negative effect on vehicle ownership. While age has no significant effect, other socio-economic factors have a significant effect. The highest level of vehicle ownership in Malang Raya was one motorcycle, which means that the community in developing cities like Malang Raya was classified as a middle class. This study might be used by the government of Malang to control the growth of vehicles, by considering population growth and socio-economic conditions, to reduce the congestion problem in Malang Raya.

Abstract

This study analyzes the determinants of early childhood well-being in female-headed households in Indonesia using data from the 2022 National Socioeconomic Survey (SUSENAS), covering 85,074 households with children aged 0–5 years. Using binary logistic regression, the analysis focuses on four key indicators: complete immunization, food adequacy, access to improved sanitation, and access to safe drinking water. The results show that children in female-headed households are significantly less likely to receive adequate and diverse food as well as complete immunization, compared to those in male-headed households. However, these households are more likely to provide access to improved sanitation and safe drinking water. Other influential factors include the household head’s education, home ownership, internet access, and residential location. The findings highlight that the gender of the household head plays a crucial role in shaping child well-being. Accordingly, gender-responsive policies are essential to address the structural vulnerabilities of female-headed households, by enhancing economic capacity, improving access to gender-sensitive services, and implementing targeted, data-driven interventions. Additionally, families, especially those led by women, are encouraged to strengthen their literacy in child health and nutrition and to utilize public services that support the fulfillment of children's basic rights.

Abstract

Labor productivity could be direct measurement of human capital quality as it shows the amount of output that the labor can prduce. McConnel and Brue (1995) define labor productivity as ratio between produced output and working hour at certaint level of wage. Our research try to analyze the labor productivity on manufacture sector and its explanatory variables by applying cross section data of medium scale industries on 1996 in Indonesia. The estimation result shows the positive significance of education level, the more educated labor will yield higher productiviy. We also try to internalize gender issue and we find the more female worker employed, the less productivity of labor force, and consequently will lowering the wage level. Those findings confonn not only Human Capital theory by Nelson-Phelps (1966), Lucas (1998) and Aghion and Howitt (1998), but also confonn the theory of wage discrimination based on gender as previously stated by Byron and Takahashi (1989) and Hansen and Wahlberg (1997).

Abstract

Introduction/main objective: Gender disparities in Indonesia’s labor market continue to be a pressing issue, with women more likely to be engaged in informal employment lacking job security and benefits. This study aims to examine the structural and spatial factors that contribute to women’s informal employment vulnerability. Novelty: While previous studies have highlighted gendered labor segmentation, few have investigated how digital access, household roles, and financial inclusion interact to shape informality risks among women across rural and urban regions. Contribution: This paper fills a theoretical and empirical gap by applying a gendered and spatially disaggregated analysis to informality, incorporating multidimensional indicators that reflect human capital, digital capability, care burden, and financial access. Research method: The study uses binary logistic regression on microdata from the 2022 National Labor Force Survey (Sakernas), involving 400,009 female workers, to estimate the likelihood of informal employment based on education, ICT use, household demographics, and credit access, across rural and urban settings. Findings/results: Results show that digital access and higher education reduce the probability of informality, while large household size, presence of young children, and house ownership increase it. Credit access is associated with higher informality, particularly in rural areas, indicating its role in supporting informal enterprises rather than formal employment transitions. Conclusion: Findings highlight the need for gender-responsive and regionally targeted policies that expand digital infrastructure, childcare support, and formalization-linked financial services to reduce women’s labor market vulnerability in Indonesia.

Abstract

Unemployment is one of the macroeconomic problems that is very difficult to overcome. In the period 2018 to 2023, the open unemployment rate in East Java Province soared due to the Covid-19 outbreak. In 2023, the open unemployment rate in East Java decreased. Despite the decrease from the previous year, the unemployment rate in East Java is still far from the ideal level. This is caused by various factors, such as the high growth of the labor force, the mismatch of skills with the needs of the job market, and others. This study aims to analyze the causes of the high unemployment rate in East Java Province and the efforts to overcome it. The data used is secondary data of 38 districts/cities in East Java Province which is then processed with panel data regression analysis method. The analysis shows that demographic transition and number of industries have a significant negative effect on unemployment in East Java. In contrast, education has a positive and significant effect on unemployment. This shows that the potential demographic bonus in East Java is well realized, especially when the labor market can absorb the growth of the labor force. Meanwhile, the high average length of schooling does not necessarily reflect the quality of educators or the suitability with the needs of the labor market.

Abstract

Urban poverty remains a persistent structural challenge, particularly amid increasing population mobility and unequal access to economic resources. This study examines the role of migration, access to capital, and household characteristics in shaping household poverty in Malang City. Using data from the 2024 National Socioeconomic Survey (Susenas), this research applies a quantitative approach with binary logistic regression to 830 household observations. The analysis incorporates migration status, access to capital, number of dependents, educational attainment, and employment status as key explanatory variables. The estimation results indicate that migration, access to capital, higher education, and formal employment are associated with a lower probability of household poverty, while a greater number of dependents significantly increases poverty risk. These findings highlight the importance of economic capacity and demographic characteristics in determining urban poverty vulnerability. The study underscores the need for targeted urban poverty reduction policies that emphasize expanded access to capital, workforce quality improvement, and enhanced support for households facing high dependency burdens.

Abstract

Stunting remains a chronic nutritional problem with a high prevalence in East Nusa Tenggara Province (NTT). This study aims to analyze the effects of health function expenditure function, female education levels, and protein consumption on stunting prevalence in NTT during the 2017–2023 period using district/city panel data. The results indicate that health function expenditure function and female education have a significant impact on reducing stunting prevalence, while protein consumption does not show a statistically significant partial effect. These findings emphasize that stunting reduction requires effective health service delivery and maternal educational capacity, rather than solely increased nutritional consumption. Optimizing health expenditure function and improving female education are therefore crucial strategies for accelerating stunting reduction in NTT.
