Abstract

This study analyzes the temporal trend and activity composition of vegetative forest and land rehabilitation (RHL) in the catchment area of Lake Limboto for 2021–2025. A quantitative descriptive approach was applied to secondary data from the BPDAS Bone Limboto 2025 database, strengthened with year-on-year change rates, the coefficient of variation, concentration ratios, and the Herfindahl-Hirschman index to assess the program portfolio structure. The total area of vegetative RHL over five years reached 693 ha, with an annual mean of 138.6 ha and a coefficient of variation of about 79.9%, indicating a dynamic, phase-based implementation rhythm. The highest achievement occurred in 2022 (340 ha; 49.06%), while the two leading years (2022–2023) accounted for 74.31% of the total. By composition, core RHL planting dominated (262 ha; 37.81%), followed by watershed rehabilitation (200 ha; 28.86%) and the Community Nursery/KBR (183 ha; 26.41%); these three pillars formed 93.07% of the portfolio, with an effective number of activities of 3.33. The annual composition revealed a tiered pattern from seedling provision toward larger-scale planting. Spatial interpretation of the activity map showed interventions concentrated on the buffer hill belts to the north, west, and south of the catchment, consistent with an upstream-priority logic. The findings emphasize that RHL evaluation should consider temporal continuity and compositional balance, not only area achievement.

Abstract

Abstract

Background: This study was conducted at Lombongo Nature Tourism Destination, Bone Bolango Regency, Gorontalo Province, Indonesia. This study developed a sustainable management strategy for Lombongo Nature Tourism Destination to overcome the fragmented tourism management and the poor integration among the 4A components (attraction, accessibility, amenities and ancillary services). This study aimed to examine how these components interact within a structured system to support destination performance. Methods: A mixed-method explanatory approach was applied, involving 47 stakeholders through questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Interpretive Structural Modeling (ISM) to identify hierarchical relationships among key sustainability elements. Findings: 9 key elements formed a hierarchical system. Sustainable policy, institutional capacity, community participation, and green infrastructure serve as the foundation. Linkage elements, such as technology, environmental education, and biodiversity conservation, act as adaptive connectors. Dependent elements of green funding and the circular economy emerge as system outcomes. This confirms that sustainability depends on integrated and structured governance rather than isolated components.  Conclusion: To achieve long-term effectiveness, sustainable tourism management in Lombongo requires a hierarchical and system-based approach that prioritizes governance, integration, and ecological conservation. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study uses ISM to transform the 4A framework into an integrated, system-based management model, moving beyond descriptive analysis toward structural and governance-oriented tourism modeling. The proposed model provides a practical governance framework that can assist policymakers and destination managers in prioritizing sustainable tourism interventions through integrated institutional, environmental, and community-based strategies.

Abstract

Use of state-owned land along river setbacks is a common phenomenon in densely populated urban areas. This study analyzes how communities utilize state land on the banks of the Jeneberang River and their motivations for settling there, which may trigger tenurial conflicts. The research was conducted in Bontoala and Taeng Villages, Pallangga Subdistrict, Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, using a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, field observations, and document review. Findings show that residents use the riparian zone for housing, small-scale enterprises (scrap collection, kiosks, livestock), and everyday social activities. The main motivations to reside in the area are economic factors (access to low-cost/abandoned land), locational advantages (proximity to Makassar and strategic for livelihoods), and socio-cultural factors (family inheritance, traditions, and community ties). However, this illegal use has implications for environmental degradation, declining river quality, and the emergence of potential horizontal and vertical conflicts over land tenure legality. The study underscores the need for regulatory measures and sustained public outreach to prevent conflict escalation in river setback areas.

Abstract

The Marisa watershed with an area of 248.43 km2 is one of the watersheds in the Paguyaman Watershed. The upstream area of the Marisa Taluduyunu River in Marisa District empties into the coastal waters of the south coast of Pohuwato Regency. Almost all the riverbanks are used by local communities for traditional gold mining. Some of these mining businesses are managed traditionally using mercury, and the waste produced without being managed is directly thrown into the environment. This research aims to analyze the impact of illegal mining on land and the Marisa watershed. The method used to analyze the data is descriptive qualitative based on field observation data and literature studies. Observations from various mining locations show that the removal of the topsoil causes the soil to be unproductive for plant growth around the mining location or site. River pollution is also one of the impacts that can be seen at mining locations. Gold ore processing, especially if the amalgamation process uses mercury, spreads mercury to environmental components, especially water quality and aquatic biota. The water quality that is most affected by mining and gold ore processing activities includes increased concentrations of suspended solids and mercury concentrations. The impact of traditional gold mining activities greatly affects the water quality components, namely, total suspended solids and dissolved mercury concentration. The concentration of total suspended solids poses a risk of harm to aquatic organisms. Concentrations of dissolved mercury metal have the potential to reduce the quality of fishery products.

Abstract

Several factors cause damage to the watershed areas, such as changes in land cover, erosion, sedimentation, and the increase of critical land, which occurs almost throughout the Biyonga sub-watershed area. Another factor contributing to the damage of the Biyonga sub-watershed is the management of the Biyonga sub-watershed itself. The Biyonga sub-watershed is one of the priority sub-watersheds within the Limboto watershed. One proposed solution is to map the stakeholders involved in the management of the sub-watershed. This study aims to analyze the stakeholders involved in the management of the Biyonga sub-watershed. Stakeholder analysis is crucial to determine the implementation of policies and programs in the Biyonga sub-watershed area based on changes in the biophysical and socio-economic conditions of the watershed. Data collection methods include interviews and focused discussions. The analysis used in this study is stakeholder analysis and policy implementation analysis. Based on the analysis results, there are nine stakeholders involved in the management of the Biyonga watershed. These stakeholders include key players such as the Bone Bolango Watershed Management Agency (BPDAS), Sulawesi River Basin Agency II (BWS), Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda), Provincial Environmental and Forestry Service (DLHK) of Gorontalo, Environmental Service of Gorontalo Regency, Public Works and Public Housing Service (PUPR), and Forest Management Unit VI of Gorontalo. Meanwhile, the subject stakeholders consist of the community, NGOs, and universities.
