Abstract

The neglect of traditional religious architecture, such as the Tuha Mosque, Meunasah, and Balee e-beut, is a significant and concerning phenomenon in Acehnese society. Rapid modernization and the massive influence of global media have been a force in this neglect. The purpose of this study is to conduct a thorough investigation on the reasons behind the neglect of Aceh's classical houses of worship. The qualitative approach involved a comprehensive analysis of relevant literature and a number of direct observations of architectural sites and interviews with cultural figures. The research findings reveal that the neglect of Aceh's classical houses of worship is the result of many complex and interconnected factors. Society's preference for Middle Eastern architectural styles and the strong currents of modernization have been important forces underlying the neglect of classical worship spaces. At the same time, the scarcity of goods and materials appropriate to the needs of classical architecture and the skills of carvers (utoh) have become objective realities that have caused classical architecture to be unable to be rehabilitated, let alone to be built. In line with this alarming condition, it is urgent to take concrete steps in the form of initiatives to promote appreciation of local wisdom and classical cultural identity, a commitment to applying a cultural identity-oriented approach in the construction and preservation of new houses of worship.

Abstract

The Historically, the Javanese palaces relied on boats for transportation, like the Kyai Rajamala boat used by the Surakarta palace. At the time, Paku Buwana IV used the boat to cross the Bengawan Solo river. Kyai Rajamala boat’s canthik is a decorative element on the end bow of the Surakarta palace's boat. Apart from being a decorative element on the boat's end bow, the Kyai Rajamala boat’s canthik is also an heirloom used to ward off bad luck. Because the Kyai Rajamala boat’s canthik has a high value for life, it is critical to communicate the Kyai Rajamala boat’s canthik through easily accepted media. One medium that can convey the beauty of the Kyai Rajamala boat’s canthik is the batik textile art, which can be used to meet basic human needs. Clothing is not only a means of covering the body; it can also be used to convey messages. The Kyai Rajamala boat’s canthik was reinterpreted and dyed with remasol into handmade batik.

Abstract

This article aims to analyze the work of the 2016 Indonesian Press Photo Award Photo of the Year entitled "Tinjau Titik Api," using the "Three Visual Layers" theory. Photo of the Year 2016 was chosen because it has the advantage of good visual value and high news value, especially for people in the news. The three visual layers analysis includes optical, cultural, and photographic meaning. The optical aspect is for the non-blind eyes, the cultural aspect includes known visual appearances and unknown visual appearances, and the photographic aspect has a functional appearance, personal appearance, and subjective appearance. The research method is qualitative analysis because its implementation is based on visual analysis to find meaning from photos depicting three figures who are symbols of the strength of the Indonesian state, namely, the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, TNI Commander General Gatot Nurmantyo, and Chief of the Indonesian National Police General Badarudin Haiti, who is inspecting the location of forest and land fires, in Geronggong Village, Ogan Komering Ilir Regency, South Sumatra. Data analysis involves: Scrutinizing relevant and irrelevant information, reducing data, compiling codes against findings data, and verifying codes as a reference for discussion and conclusion. The research results show that the 2016 Photo of the Year contains meaning that shows the Indonesian government's commitment to dealing with forest and land fires in Sumatra. The photo has advantages in terms of visual value which is reflected in the composition, depth of focus, and expression of the president, and in terms of news value, it is superior in terms of character value, as well as another advantage in the closeness of the photographer to the object of the event.

Abstract

This study explores the creative process of the collaborative artwork Painting in Dance, which merges dance and painting through an innovative, real-time interaction between a dancer and a painter. Employing an art-based autoethnographic approach, the research documents personal experiences and reflections to reveal how spontaneous movement and Action Painting techniques inform each other. Data were collected through visual documentation, self-interviews, and personal journals, and analyzed thematically and narratively. The findings identify four key stages of collaborative creativity: exploratory contemplation, improvisation, expressive collaboration, and final touches. These stages transform the dancer’s body into an active medium for painting. This study contributes a novel model of interdisciplinary artistic creation, demonstrating how integrating dance and visual art can produce dynamic, multisensory performances and inspire new pedagogical approaches in contemporary art education.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the meaning of symbols on the keris that depicts the identity and character of the Nusantara society. Keris as one of Indonesia's original cultural products in the field of tosan aji has multiple functions. Keris leaves its function as a weapon and puts forward a message language for certain conditions and situations. Keris is a part of the heritage of the ancestors of the Indonesian society filled with knowledge. The knowledge in keris that stands out is the symbol system that is also present in it. This knowledge is a form of thinking of the people of the archipelago in implying their culture. The approach used in this research is the Nusantara Aesthetic approach which states that every work presented, especially in the Archipelago, always prioritises the aspects of guidance and spectacle. Keris as a cultural work of the archipelago does not only prioritise the aspect of beauty(spectacle) but also becomes a cultural work full of teachings and outlook on life(guidance) through the symbol language system presented. The symbol system in the keris then becomes a form of culture that is passed down from generation to generation as a depiction of the identity and character of the Nusantara society.
