Abstract

This study aims at improving students' communication skills through a communicative approach. The communicative approach makes use of real-life situations that necessitate communication. The teacher sets up a situation that students likely encounter in real life. This study implemented classroom action research. This study found that students' communication skills improved significantly from the first and second cycles. This can be seen from the improvement in the student's achievement of the maximum score in the second cycle. This research implies that it is hoped that the communicative approach can be maximized in English classes so that students can communicate in English meaningfully and effectively.

Abstract

The code of conduct established by a specific community and accepted as necessary for a peaceful living environment is known as politeness. Being courteous involves more than just acting appropriately; it also involves communicating with proper language. A speaker might lessen the undesirable outcomes by employing politeness techniques. This study intended to examine the many forms of linguistic politeness that language teachers use in classroom communication. In this study, descriptive analysis was combined with a qualitative research design. The study's findings suggested that there were specific basic rules for language politeness and positive and negative politeness techniques for putting them into practice. Therefore, teachers are expected to continually use polite forms of language to create a conducive learning environment

Abstract

The present study which made use of an ex-post facto research with correlation design was intended to figure out the significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking skills of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 4 Mengwi in the academic year 2024/2025. The samples of the research consisted of 63 students which were chosen by means of cluster sampling method with lottery system. The data were collected through administering the research instruments which were in the form of questionnaire and role-play. The obtained data were statistically analysed by using Normality Test, Homogeneity Test, Pearson product moment correlation and T-test. Then the result of correlations is 0.93, which means the data > 0.05, it showed that the data was had high correlations. The results of the data analysis clearly revealed the alternative hypothesis was accepted. In other words, the research findings confirmed that there is significant correlation between self-confidence and speaking skills of the eighth-grade students of SMP N 4 Mengwi in the academic year 2024/2025.

Abstract

Speaking skills as a medium to develop and broaden horizons. Speaking skills, which are classified as productive language skills, are not only a medium for conveying various kinds of information and for expressing themselves. Speaking skills also apply media to broaden students' knowledge and insight into various fields of life. This study made use of a classroom action research design with two cycles of learning activities to improve students' speaking skills through BEST strategy. Data were collected through pre-test, post-test, and questionnaire. The results showed that the speaking skills of the students improved significantly from the first and second cycles when compared to the results of the pre-test. Therefore, the BEST strategy is considered effective for teaching speaking skills. This study implies that teachers should consider using BEST strategy in their classroom to build up students' speaking skills.

Abstract

The growing use of digital formative assessment often overlooks cultural contexts, particularly in multicultural nations like Indonesia. Anchored in culturally responsive pedagogy, this study addresses the gap between global digital assessment tools and locally relevant educational practices. This study aims to examine students' experiences of integrating local wisdom into digital formative assessment through Wayground in Indonesian elementary schools. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and classroom observations with students who consistently used Wayground for formative assessment activities integrating local wisdom. The data were thematically analyzed. Findings indicate that incorporating local wisdom promotes meaningful learning by linking academic content to students' daily experiences. Students reported heightened engagement and motivation, diminished assessment anxiety, and more favorable emotional responses when cultural contexts were recognizable. Culturally contextualized feedback supported reflection and deeper learning. Furthermore, integrating local wisdom strengthened identity affirmation and cultural pride, demonstrating that digital assessment can promote character development alongside cognitive growth. This study concludes that culturally integrated digital formative assessment enhances learning, engagement, and identity development. It is recommended that educators incorporate local wisdom into digital assessment design, that policymakers align digital assessment initiatives with cultural preservation, and that future research employ mixed-methods designs across diverse contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the implementation of Game-Based Learning (GBL) as an innovative strategy in Indonesian language learning through a theoretical review. The method employed is a literature review examining various articles, journals, and theses related to the implementation of GBL. Data were collected through a systematic literature search in academic databases such as Google Scholar, SINTA, GARUDA, and university repositories. The findings indicate that GBL enhances students’ motivation, engagement, and learning outcomes. Media such as Kahoot!, Wordwall, Genially, Classcraft, and project-based games effectively support reading, writing, speaking, and text comprehension skills. GBL also promotes the development of 21st-century skills (4C), namely critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication. However, its implementation faces challenges, including limited teachers’ digital literacy, technological readiness, potential distractions, and unequal access to devices. Overall, GBL has strong potential to improve the quality of Indonesian language learning when systematically designed and supported by adequate teacher competence.

Abstract

This study investigated the use of speech actions by English as a foreign language (EFL) high school teachers and their usefulness in improving classroom communication. Data were gathered from 20 EFL high school teachers through interviews and classroom observations. The study found that speech actions are essential for regulating classroom activities and improving students' language skills. The data analysis found that teachers with higher levels of English proficiency could employ a broader range of speech acts, and teachers' communicative styles influenced the types and frequency of speech acts used. The findings imply that teacher training programs should prioritize the development of successful communication skills, such as speech acts, to improve teacher effectiveness in the classroom. The study emphasizes the relevance of excellent communication skills in language education and the need for continual training and professional development to improve teacher effectiveness. These findings have significant implications for language teacher education programs and the development of practical communication skills among language teachers.
