Abstract

The issues discussed in this research were: (1) How was the reading ability of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 172 Jakarta before the implementation of digital comic media, (2) How was the reading ability of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 172 Jakarta after the implementation of digital comic media, (3) Whether there was a significant difference in reading ability between the group taught using digital comic media and the group that used conventional learning media, and (4) How effective was the application of digital comic media on the reading ability of grade VII students of SMP Negeri 172 Jakarta in the academic year 2025/2026. The research employed a quantitative approach using a Quasi-Experimental Design with Pre-test and Post-test Control Group Design. The population of this research was the seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 172 Jakarta, totaling 288 students across eight classes. The sample was selected through cluster random sampling, consisting of Class VII-1 as the Experimental Class and Class VII-2 as the Control Class, with 36 students in each class. The instrument used to collect data was a multiple-choice reading test of 50 items administered as both pre-test and post-test, focusing on recount text comprehension in accordance with the Kurikulum Merdeka framework. The experimental class was taught using Digital Comics media designed through Google Chrome and Canva, while the control class was taught using conventional lecture methods with textbooks. The normality of data was verified through the Shapiro-Wilk test, and hypothesis testing was conducted using the Independent Samples t-Test through SPSS. Based on the analysis of data, it can be concluded that: (1) Before the implementation of digital comic media, the mean score of the experimental class in the pre-test was 58.94, indicating that students' reading ability was below the Minimum Mastery Score (KKM) of 80; (2) After the implementation of digital comic media, the mean score of the experimental class in the post-test increased substantially to 84.72, representing a 43.72% improvement and surpassing the KKM, whereas the control class only reached a mean post-test score of 68.25, reflecting a moderate improvement of 20.96%; (3) The result of the Independent Samples t-Test showed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000, which is lower than the significance level of 0.05, indicating that there was a statistically significant difference in reading ability between the experimental and control classes; (4) Digital comic media was proven to be highly effective in improving the reading comprehension of seventh-grade students of SMP Negeri 172 Jakarta, as the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the initial proficiency of Widya Dharma University’s PPG (Pre-Service Teacher Education) alumni as a basis for planning Continuous Professional Development (CPD). The method used is quantitative descriptive analysis supported by qualitative data collected through an online questionnaire administered to the alumni. The results indicate that the levels of pedagogical, professional, social, and personal competencies fall into the moderate category; however, gaps exist in certain indicators. Major weaknesses were identified in higher-order thinking skills (HOTS)-based learning abilities, reflection through action research (PTK), and scientific practices such as publications and presentations at broader forums. Qualitative data revealed that alumni have a greater need for practice-based PKB activities, such as workshops and learning communities. These findings underscore the importance of designing PKB that is contextual, collaborative, and oriented toward the real needs of novice teachers.

Abstract

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of integrating Project-Based Learning (PjBL) supported by Canva on procedural writing skills among eighth-grade students at SMPIT Muhammadiyah An Najah Jatinom. The research aimed to enhance student engagement, motivation, and writing performance by using digital tools in a bilingual Islamic education context. The results showed significant improvements in students' writing, with the percentage of students meeting the minimum mastery criterion increasing from 28% in the pre-test to 82% in Cycle II. The study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) with iterative cycles of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through qualitative methods (observations, interviews, field notes) and quantitative methods (writing tests). The findings confirm that PjBL and Canva effectively support multimodal literacy, foster collaboration, and enhance writing skills. The study contributes to educational practice by offering a model for integrating digital tools into PjBL, particularly in bilingual classrooms. Future research should explore the long-term effects and the application of this approach to other genres of writing and educational settings.

Abstract

Reading is one of the crucial language skills for learners, especially when they are learning English. English learners can usually read texts well, but many of them cannot understand the content of the text. This study aims to determine how to implement metacognitive strategies to learn reading skills. Results showed that students had a good awareness of metacognitive reading strategies. However, it did not affect students' reading comprehension test results much. This is because several other factors, such as interest, background knowledge of students, and teachers' role, also significantly influence students' reading comprehension. This study used a case study approach to its analysis. This research demonstrates the efficacy of self-planning, self-monitoring, and self-evaluation as three phases of metacognitive strategy execution. These steps are accomplished via friendly conversation with the pupils. Five pupils in particular shown exceptional levels of motivation, success, self-awareness, and independence in their reading comprehension and other academic endeavours.
