Abstract

In Malay Archipelago, Malay is associated with Islam. Malay people who migrate to Malay Archipelago centuries ago have embraced Islam as their faith. Islam is spread across Malay Archipelago peacefully. Those who spread Islam in this region didn’t destroy the principles of local communities. Some local traditions were even used to spread Islam. Therefore, Islam in the faith and practice of Malay people still contains local elements, including magic—known by Malay people as ilmu. Ilmu is closely related with belief, ideas, and lifestyles of the practitioners. As a tradition, Ilmu strengthens local beliefs and practices. The arrival of Islam has changed the dialectic ilmu of Malay people. In the dialectic process between local tradition and Islamic elements, there is contestation. This paper describes the relation of a form of contestation between local elements and Islam in the Ilmu of Malay people. The dynamics of the contestation are ongoing. The competition is sometimes won by local elements, so its strengthened. But, sometimes local elements are defeated and fully replaced by Islamic elements. However, some Islamic and local elements are found to exist side-by-side.

Abstract

Fair educational opportunities for all members of Indonesian society are the subject of this article. Improving educational equity requires a systemic approach, rather than focusing on a single area. All the way up to the calibre of the teachers, the state of the school system, and the curriculum in light of the changes brought about by the rise of industry 4.0. By taking a fair view of each region's circumstances, the government can work toward educational equality. In addition, local and state governments, as well as the federal government, must work together to achieve educational equality. Nowadays, in a democratic society, everyone has the right to an education. An adequate education is a fundamental human right, as stated in Article 146 of the Constitution of 1945 of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study used the experimental method with quasi experimental design, specifically, non-equivalent control group design. There were two groups, namely, experimental group in which it was given treatment by using PBL and control group in which it was given no treatment. For collecting the data, both groups were given speaking test and self-confidence questionnaire. For speaking, the data were collected using speaking test which was evaluated by two raters using analytic rubric consisting of five elements, namely accent, grammar, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Meanwhile, students’ self-confidence was evaluated using a ready-made-self-confidence questionnaire which measured (1) language use anxiety, (2) causal attribution, (3) perceived L2 competence, and (4) self-efficacy. Both data were analyzed by using t-test to see the difference in means (1) between pre- and post-test of students’ speaking achievements and of their self-confidence, and (2) of post-test of speaking achievements and of their self-confidence between the first and the second group. Regression analysis was also given to see the contribution of PBL to the variables in questions. The results showed that (1) there was a significant difference both in speaking achievement (t=8.828, p<.000) and self-confidence (t=7.968,p<.000) of the experimental group after being taught using PBL, (2) there was also a significant difference between experimental and control groups both in speaking ability (t=2.307, p<.027) and self-confidence (t=3.595, p<.001) , (3) the contribution of PBL to the students’ speaking achievement was 99.7%  and to self-confidence was 92.7%. In conclusion, PBL could be considered as an effective method in teaching speaking and in increasing students’ self-confidence.

Abstract

Due to its geographic location bordering directly with neighboring countries, the border in West Kalimantan as the outer limit of the state of Indonesia is one region that has not received attention, especially attention with regard to activities in the economic field. Cross Border Trade and Market in the Border area, for example, is so much economic activity along the border there is a transaction involving the people who come from two different countries and have different legal systems. In the perspective of legal anthropology, it is probably legal system that applies to communities in the border area showed such legal pluralism, if not addressed carefully, it did not rule out the trade problems that occur in communities in the border area will be sticking to the issue between countries, because of differences in existing law. Therefore, efforts to create a model that would be able to accommodate the parties-such as community, nation and state of Indonesia-Malaysia would need to be pursued, so the problem is not a legal issue to drag on the interests of each party.
