Abstract

Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) caused by dengue virus transmitted by Aedes aegypti (Ae. Aegypti) that lives and breeds in clean water. The aim of the study was to analyze the difference of the longevity and development of Ae. aegypti larva in the difference pH of domestic sewage water. This experimental used post only control group design to analyze population of Ae. aegypti instar III larvae which was bred in the Entomology Laboratory of the Faculty of Public Health, Diponegoro University, Semarang, Central Java. The number of tested larvae was 25 per media with six replications. Thus, the total number of larvae was 750. Data were analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and followed by Mann Whitney test. The result showed that Ae. aegypti larva could survive and breed to be mosquitos in the domestic sewage water with various pH levels. There was significant difference between the number of larvae transforming to pupa (p=0.002), pupa to imago (p=0.001), and the number of survival imago until second week (p<0.001) in the domestic waste water with various pH levels. Other findings revealed that people tended to wash away larvae they found in the water, but still used the water for daily live. As a result, the larvae bred in the domestic sewage water. Therefore, elimination breeding place (EBP) program needs to be socialized to make people aware of either domestic waste water or domestic clean water.

Abstract

Semarang, the capital city of Central Java Province, is one of the endemic areas in Indonesia with increasing case fatality rate in the last three years. Accordingly, the educational intervention is fundamentally requested. The aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of health education intervention on the community knowledge improvement and its implication for reducing the rat populations. The study was performed using field experiment with pretest and post test designs. A total of 55 cadres and housewives joining on the various education program at Sumurboto Village, Banyumanik Sub district, Semarang was used as research subjects. The health education interventions introduced in the study were counselling and mentoring. ,Data were analyzed using paired t-test. The results revealed that the knowledge of the subject research significantly increased and the rat populations significantly decreased after being given the educational intervention. The rat species identified in Sumurboto Village were Rattus norvegicus, R. tanezumi, R. exulans and Suncus murinus. The knowledge score before and after the intervention was 80.87 and 88.83 respectively. Meanwhile, the rat populations measured by trap success method reduced from 8% to 6% after the intervention. Nevertheless, the rat population in Sumurboto Village is considerably relative high indicating that the village possessed a high risk on leptospirosis attack. It is strongly suggested that the health education intervention in the community should be regularly maintained in order to accelerate the knowledge of leptospirosis and reduce the rat populations.

Abstract

Rats are widely distributed disease spreaders and settlement pests. Species of rats often found include Rattus norvegicus, R. tanezumi and Mus musculus. Phosphine as a fumigant is commonly used to control pests with no residue, especially related where there are placed the commercial products . The research objective was to determine effect of phosphine gas fumigant (hydrogen phosphide (PH3)) on rat death. The study sample was species of rats, i.e. M.musculus, R.tanezumi, and R.norvegicus. This study was used 4 dose variations (0, 4, 6 and 8 tablets) with 6 replications per unit treatment. Each treatment (dosis) needed 1 rat . The results of different test analyzed that significance value was 0.0001 (p=0.0001), indicating that there were differences in average time span of M. musculus, R. tanezumi and R. norvegicus death to treat of phosphine dose variations. Based on Probit analysis, the data showed that The fastest LT50 and LT99 were at a dose of 8 tablets for 90.5 and 114.9 minutes, and LT50 and LT99 were at the lowest dose of 4 tablets in 148.1 and 188.1 minutes, respectively. The higher dosage of phosphine was treated, the higher gas concentration was produced, so that it could kill M. musculus, R. tanezumi dan R. norvegicus quickly. The mortality might be generated by cell damages that occurred inside the body of rats.

Abstract

Sendangmulyo Village is one of the DHF (Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever) endemic areas in Semarang City. Previous studies reported that Aedes spp. active biting at night (nocturnal biting activity) in some areas in Indonesia. This indicates that changes in the blood-sucking behavior of Aedes spp mosquitoes can have an impact on dengue transmission. This research is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional study design. The study was conducted in 64 houses. The mosquito field collection was carried out using the resting mosquito collection method at 18.00-06.00 WIB. Observations of environmental parameters were also carried out to determine the temperature and humidity of the environment around the breeding grounds of Aedes spp. The results showed that there was a change in Aedes spp's blood-sucking activity from 16.00-17.00 WIB to 18.00-20.00 WIB. The distribution of Aedes albopictus in Sendangmulyo Village was 18% of the total Aedes spp. mosquitoes collected with a Resting Rate (RR) value of 0.98%. The average temperature and humidity in the area were 28.6 °C and 77.2%, respectively. This change in blood-sucking activity in Aedes spp has the potential to increase the risk of spreading DHF in Sendangmulyo Village. Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever vector control efforts need to be improved. Upaya pengendalian vektor DBD perlu ditingkatkan.

Abstract

The prevalence of DM in Riskesdas in 2018 according to the Perkeni consensus in 2015 is higher than according to the Perkeni consensus in 2011, the prevalence was10.9%. The disease can develop into diabetes nephropathy, Increased prevalence of diabetic nephropathy directly proportional with an increase in diabetes prevalence. Diabetic nephropathy is a microvascular complication in diabetics that develops around 30% in patients with type I DM and about 40% in patients with type II DM. Turmeric extract has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects to prevent the bad development of diabetes nephropathy. This study looked at the effect of giving a combination of noni and turmeric extract on histopathology of alloxan-induced renal rats. A total of 25 mice were divided into 5 treatment groups, namely the PI group (250 mg / kgBB extract dose), PII group (500 mg / kgBB extract dose), PIII group (750 mg / kgBB extract dose), positive control group (glibenklamid) and negative control group (without extract and glibenklamid). The study used Post Test Only Group. The highest percentage decrease in blood glucose in the PI group was 56.11% and the lowest decrease in the PIII group was 24.12% with p = 0.012. The results of the study were not based on the number of extract doses. The measurement results of rat body weight and glomerular diameter were not affected by blood glucose level with p = 0.700 for body weight and p = 0.187 for glomerular measurement results.

Abstract

Aedes albopictus is the secondary vector that played an important role in the transmission of Dengue Haemorrhagic Fever (DHF). Previous research has examined the exact radiation dose in producing Ae. albopictus sterile males, which is a dose of 60 Gy. Before being applied in the field, a semi-field trial phase is actually needed. This study aims to determine the competitiveness of Ae. albopictus sterile male mating with a semi-field test. This study is a field experiment and used males radiated until becoming a sterile mosquito. Subject mated to fertile female and divided into 3 groups of samples, the control group (10 normal males and 10 normal females), the test group (10 sterile males and 10 normal females) and the combination group (10 normal males, 30 sterile males, and 10 normal females). Treatment was performed with 3 replications. Tested mosquitoes were placed into the special tent of bugs (bugdoom) with condusive environmental conditions of Ae. albopictus mosquitoes. The results of study showed that there was significant differences (p ≤ 0.0001) the level of sterility of eggs. The test insect group produced the highest sterile eggs 100% compared to the other groups. Value of Mating Competitiveness (C index) Male Sterile Mosquito Ae. albopictus of 0.34. This showed that for TSM applications in actual conditions, it is required 3 times of the population size of sterile males from the normal male population in the field.
