Abstract

 AbstractThis study was aimed to find out the correlation between students? interest in speaking and their speaking achievement at MAN 2 Filial Pontianak. There was two problems that need to be discussed in this research, first was how strong the correlation between students? interest in speaking and their speaking achievement. Second, how much was the contribution of students? interest through their speaking achievement. The researcher used purposive sampling technique to choose the sample. There were 21 students of the eleventh grade. Class B was chosen as the sample of this research. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and speaking score rubric. The researcher used Pearson product moment to calculate the data of students? interest and speaking achievement. The result showed that there was significant or positive correlation and indicating a medium correlation. The contribution of students? interest through their speaking achievement was in the amount of 35.6%. Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of self-talk strategy in teaching writing recount texts to Year – 8 students of SMPN 18 Pontianak in Academic Year 2017/2018. The population of this research was all of Year – 8 students of SMP Negeri 18 Pontianak in Academic Year 2017/2018. The writer took the sample by using cluster random sampling to determine the participant of research which is consisted of 36 students. The data were collected by using measurement technique and the tool of data collection was written test. Referring to the research findings, the data showed that the effect size of treatment was 2.208. It was categorized as a strong effect (ES > 0.8). Thus, the writer positively recommends the teacher to use self-talk as a variation of strategy in teaching process, especially in the teaching writing recount texts.Key Words: Self-Talk Strategy, Recount Texts, Writing.

Abstract

 AbstractThe aim of this research was to know how retelling stories by using picture series improved students? speaking skill at the tenth grade students in Class X IPA 1 of SMAN 5 Pontianak in academic year 2017/2018. The research was conducted through Classroom Action Research in three cycles. The subjects of this research were the tenth grade English teacher and 36 students in class X IPA 1. The researcher used observation checklist, field note and speaking performance test as tools to collect the data. The result showed that presenting the materials and modelling retelling stories by using picture series improved students? ability in using appropriate vocabulary, in using correct simple past tense and in using correct pronunciation. Modelling retelling stories by using picture series improved students? ability in reducing pauses and hesitation as they learnt the model to speak fluently. Moreover, presenting the materials, presenting the picture series and modelling retelling stories by using picture series improved students? activeness, students? confidence, students? enthusiasm, and students? interest. In conclusion, retelling recount stories by using picture series improved students? speaking skill.  Keywords: Retelling Stories, Picture Series, Speaking Skill.

Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this research is to investigate the effectiveness and the effect size of using Guessing Game in students’ writing skill on descriptive text. This research was conducted to the seventh grade students of MTS N 01 Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015.  In this research, a pre-experimental design was used by the writer and the sample class VII C which consisted of 40 students. The writer used the measurement technique to collect the data and the tool of data collecting was written test. The result of data analysis, the writer found out that the effect size of the treatment was 1.47 and it was qualified as very strong effect. In conclusion, the effectiveness of the use of Guessing Game is very strong to improve the students’ writing skill on descriptive text.   Keywords: Guessing Game, Writing skill, Descriptive Text Abstrak: Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menginfestigasi keefektifan dan seberapa efektifnya penggunaan Guessing Game di keterampilan menulis siswa pada teks deskriptif. Penelitian ini dilakukan pada siswa kelas VII dari MTS N 01 Pontianak pada tahun ajaran 2014/2015.Dalam penelitian ini, penulis menggunakan desain pra-eksperimen dan kelas VII C yang terdiri dari 40 siswa sebagai sampel. Penulis menggunakan teknik pengukuran untuk mengumpulkan data dan alat pengumpulan data adalah tes tertulis. Hasil dari data analisis, penulis menemukan bahwa ukuran efek dari penanganan adalah 1,47 dan itu memenuhi syarat sebagai efek yang sangat kuat. Abstract

  Abstract: The aim of this research was to find out the effectiveness of 3-2-1 strategy in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text to the tenth grade students of SMA Santo Fransiskus Asisi Pontianak in academic year 2014/2015. The research method was a pre-experimental research with one group of pre test and post test design and the sample was clas X B which consists of 30 students. The research found that 3-2-1 strategy was effective in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text to the tenth grade students of SMASanto Fransiskus Asisi Pontianak. It is based on the data calculation that  the degree of the effectiveness was 1, 01 and it was categorized as high. In conclusion, the effectiveness of 3-2-1 strategy in teaching reading comprehension on narrative text to the tenth grade students of SMA Santo fransiskus Asisi pontianak in academic year 2014/2015 can be categorized as high.   Keywords: Reading Comprehension, Narrative Text, 3-2-1 Strategy Abstrak: Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui keefektifan dari strategi 3-2-1 dalam mengajarkan pemahaman membaca teks narratif pada siswa kelas X SMA Santo Fransiskus Asisi Pontianak pada tahun pelajaran 2014/2015. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah metode pre-experimental dengan model satu grup dari pre-test dan post-test dan sampel dari kelas X B yang berjumlah 30 siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 3-2-1 strategi efektif dalam mengajar pemahaman membaca teks narratif pada siswa kelas X SMA Santo Fransiskus Asisi Pontianak. Hal tersebut di buktikan dengan perhitungan data  bahwa tingkat dari keefektifan adalah 1,01 yang tergolong kategori tinggi. Jadi, keefektifan dari 3-2-1 strategy dalam mengajarkan pemahaman reading pada teks narratif pada siswa kelas 10 SMA Santo Fransiskus Asisi Pontianak pada tahun akademik  2014/2015 di kategorikan sebagai tinggi.   Kata kunci: Pemahaman Reading, Teks Narratif, 3-2-1 Strategy

Abstract

Abstract This study aimed to prove whether Treasure hunt game is effective for teaching preposition to the seventh grade students of SMPN 6 in The Academic Year of 2014/2015. The design of this study was pre-experimental design with one group pretest-posttest design. The population of this study was 234 students. The sample was chosen by using cluster random sampling technique. Moreover, the technique to collect the data was measurement technique. Then, the tool of collecting data was written test. It was found that Treasure hunt Game is effective in teaching preposition to the Seventh grade students of SMPN 6. The effectiveness of using Treasure hunt game can be seen based on the researcher finding that the value of t-test was 9.83 which meant bigger than the number of t-table 2.037 in the area of paired sample in 5% of 33 degree of freedom. The researcher concluded that the use of treasure hunt gamewas effective for teaching preposition of place in describing things to the students of SMPN 6 in The Academic Year of 2014/2015. The researcher suggests that the teacher could include treasure hunt game in teaching process as a reference of method that may be used to teach preposition. Keywords:  Effectiveness,Preposition, Treasure Hunt Game

Abstract

AbstractThis research investigated whether or not using animated learning video as teaching media was effective in teaching vocabulary. This was a pre-experimental research with one group pre-test and post-test design. The population was the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Ambawang and the sample was the VII A which consists of 17 students. The data were collected using objective tests and analyzed by t-test and effect size formula. The obtained t-value (12.57) was bigger than the critical value of r (1.746) by the degree of freedom 16 meaning that animated learning video increased the students’ vocabulary. The effect size was categorized as high effect since the ES value (2.76)was bigger than the reliability coefficient of the test (0.8). So, based on the research findings, the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected, while the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states that “Teaching vocabulary by using animated learning video is significantly effective” was accepted. To conclude, the use of animated learning video is highly significantly effective to teach vocabulary to the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Sungai Ambawang in Academic Year 2017/2018. Keywords: Animated Learning Video, Vocabulary, Teaching Media

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menyelidiki mengenai seberapa efektif dari pengajaran penulisan teks deskripsi dengan menggunakan gambar tanpa kata. Metode yang digunakan adalah pre exsperimental dengan rancangan penelitian satu grup pre-test dan post-test. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah kelas VII B yang berjumlah 31 siswa. Data penelitian dikumpulkan dengan memberikan pre test sebelum diberikan perlakuan dan post test setelah dilakukan perlakuan dalam bentuk test menulis deskripsi teks pada 31 siswa. Data dianalisa dengan menggunakan rumus tingkat efektifitas. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mengajar menulis teks deskripsi dengan menggunakan gambar kata tingkat efektifitasanya adalah tinggi. It was a pre-experimental method with one group pre-test post-test design. The sample was Year-VII students Class B, numbering 31 students. The data were collected by giving pre-test before the treatment and post-test after the treatment in the form of writing descriptive text to 31 students with the same test item. The data were analyzed by effect size formula. The results of data analysis showed that the effective size of teaching descriptive text writing skill by using wordless pictures is high. Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out the most causing factor of undergraduate students’ difficulties in writing thesis in the English Education Study Program of FKIP Tanjungpura University Pontianak. Descriptive research design was used in this research. 28 students were chosen as the sample and selected by using purposive sampling. The data was collected by using questionnaire with 31 items designed on a five-point likert-type scale to capture students’ opinion about the causing factors of their difficulties in writing thesis. Data analysis shows that basic knowledge of thesis main components factor has percentage 27.68%, process of consultation factor has percentage 26.04%, psychological factor has percentage 25.25%, while economic factor has percentage 21.03%. Therefore, it is concluded that basic knowledge of thesis main component factor is the most causing factor of students’ difficulties in writing thesis.   Keywords: factors, difficulties, thesis     Abstrak: Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan faktor yang paling menyebabkan mahasiswa Prodi Bahasa Inggris FKIP Universitas Tanjungpura kesulitan dalam menulis skripsi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif. 28 siswa dipilih menjadi sample menggunakan sample purposif. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan angket yang berjumlah 31 item didesain berdasarkan 5 poin skala likert untuk menangkap opini mahasiswa mengenai faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan mereka kesulitan dalam menulis skripsi. Data analisis menunjukan bahwa faktor pengetahuan dasar dari komponen utama skripsi mendapat persentase 27.68%, faktor proses konsultasi mendapat persentase 26.04%, faktor psikologi mendapat persentase 25.25%, sedangkan faktor ekonomi mendapat persentase 21,03%. Oleh karena itu, disimpulkan bahwa faktor pengetahuan dasar dari komponen utama skripsi adalah faktor yang paling menyebabkan mahasiswa kesulitan dalam menulis skripsi.   Kata kunci: faktor, kesulitan, skripsi

Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of this research is to find out the effectiveness of the use of 3H strategy (Here, Hidden, and in my Head) in teaching reading comprehension to the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Pontianak in academic year 2013/2014. This research was conducted as a quasi-experimental research with the non-equivalent control group design. The sample of this research were class VIIIB as the experimental class and class VIIID as the control class. The data were collected through pre-test and post test by using the essay test consisting of twenty items and were analyzed by using Effect Size (ES) formula. The finding shows that the effect of treatment is 1.53 (> 1.00) or categorized as strong effect. It indicates that the use of 3H strategy is effective in teaching reading comprehension. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa efek dari penggunaan strategi 3H adalah 1.53 (>1.00) atau dikategorikan memiliki efek yang kuat.
