Abstract

Introduction: Cervical cancer is a malignant tumor originating from primary squamous epithelial cells and it is one of the several types of cancers that affects more to women. Methods: This research uses descriptive analytic with case- control. The sample was 52 patients who divided into 26 patients with cervical cancer and 26 patients with non - cervical cancer were outpatient and inpatient at Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital Dr. Mohammad Hoesin Palembang during the period September 2016 -November 2016. This study uses primary data in the form of interviews. Data was analyzed by univariate and presented in a frequency distribution table. Furthermore, using bivariate analysis to determine the relationship and OR. Result: From 8 risk factors studied, there is sygnificancy correlation between pathological vaginal discharge (p= 0,0005 OR= ˆž), parity (p= 0,0005 OR= 22,7), age (p= 0,0005 OR= 19,2), oral contraception usage for a long time (p= 0,0005, OR= 12,4), age of the first intercourse (p= 0,006, OR= 6,1 ), and the husband’s occupation (p= 0,05 OR= 3,6) with the incidence of cervical cancer. While, there are two risk factors that don’t have a sygnificancy correlation between smoking (p= 1,0) and changing sexual partners (p= 1,0) with the incidence of cervical cancer. Conclusion: The results of this research identified  risk factors that significantly related to cervical cancer incidence was the age, the age of first sexual intercourse, parity, long-term oral contraceptive use, a history of vaginal discharge, and the husband's occupation.

Abstract

Background: Habitual consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is linked to elevated blood glucose and increased body weight. Medical students often experience high stress, which may increase SSBs consumption. This study aimed to examine the associations between SSB consumption, fasting blood glucose, body mass index (BMI), and waist circumference among medical students. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in October 2022 using a total sampling method involving 184 first-year students at the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Sriwijaya, Palembang, Indonesia. SSBs consumption was assessed using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQ-FFQ). Fasting blood glucose was measured by  glucometer after an overnight fast. Body height, weight, and waist circumference were measured using a stadiometer, digital scale, and tape measure, respectively. Physical activity was assessed with the International Physical Activity Questionnaire–Short Form (IPAQ-SF). Associations were tested using Kruskall Wallis, independent t-test, and chi square as appropriate. Results: Most students consumed SSBs 3–4 times per week and in amount >495 mL. The volume of SSBs consumption was associated with BMI (p=0.02), fasting blood glucose (p<0.001), and waist circumference (p<0.01). Similarly, the frequency of SSBs consumption was associated with fasting blood glucose (p=0.04) and waist circumference (p<0.01), but not with BMI (p=0.16). Conclusion: Consumption of SSBs among students is high. Frequent and high-volume consumption of SSBs is associated with elevated fasting blood glucose levels and the nutritional status, whereas higher volume is associated with increased BMI. Reducing SSB intake and promoting healthier beverage choices may support a sustainable healthy lifestyle in young adults.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is fundamental to the development of English language proficiency, as it underpins the acquisition of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. In Indonesia, many junior high school students face challenges in expanding their vocabulary due to passive and repetitive learning methods. This study examined the effectiveness of the Board Race Game in improving vocabulary mastery, with a focus on nouns and adjectives. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design was used, involving 22 seventh-grade students from a junior high school. Data were gathered through a pre-test and post-test, each comprising 20 multiple-choice questions. The results showed a marked improvement in vocabulary scores, with the average increasing from 67.73 to 82.50. Statistical analysis using a paired sample t-test indicated a significant difference, and the effect size was calculated at 1.09, demonstrating a strong effect. These findings suggest that the Board Race Game is an effective tool for enhancing vocabulary learning.

Abstract

The canteen is one of the supporting facilities on campus. The availability of nutritious menus is of great assistance in meeting the nutritional needs of the academic community in support of its learning activities. However, not all campus canteens meet the criteria for healthy canteens. Students' input is required for the establishment of a healthy canteen, especially regarding the menu. This study aims to explore the canteen menu preferences of medical students at Universitas Sriwijaya to develop a healthy canteen. This study is an observational survey, and Google Form is used to collect data through an online questionnaire. The majority of the 646 samples (72.4 %) were females, lived within the family house (52.8 %), had meals from the canteen (70.1 %), were likely to buy ready-to-eat food (65 %), and spent their daily pocket money between IDR 20,000 to 30,000 (34.1 %). A part of them was pleased with the former canteen's menu, including flavor, presentation, menu variants, accessibility to desired menus, pricing, and nutrition content. The majority of students prefer to purchase the main menu (85.1 %), drink without added sugar (74.8%), get the seller's predetermined food portion (54%), and select a canteen that regulates unhealthy menu limitations (46.9 %), which provides a complete menu list with prices and nutritional content (49.8 %). Most students prefer menus that fill them up, no added sugar drinks, predetermined menu portions, limiting menus that are considered unhealthy, and clear nutritional content and price information on the menu list.

Abstract

Exclusive breastfeeding is essential for maternal and infant health, yet its coverage remains low in several regions. This community service activity aims to evaluate the effectiveness of community-based counseling in improving knowledge among Posyandu cadres and pregnant women. The activity involved 11 cadres and 32 pregnant women in Ilir Barat II using pretest, counseling, discussion, simulation, and post-test approaches. Results showed an increase in participants' knowledge scores, with the cadres' median pretest score improving from 12 (8–18) to 18 (14–19), and pregnant women’s scores rising from 8.6 (2–15) to 17 (13–20). The PRECEDE-PROCEED model was applied to identify predisposing factors through IPTEKS-based education, enabling through simulations, and reinforcing through cadre support. Community-based counseling proved effective in enhancing participants' knowledge, though the changes were not entirely significant. This program has the potential to be replicated in other areas to improve exclusive breastfeeding coverage in Indonesia.
