Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is essential in learning activities at school and real life. Until now, students' abilities in solving mathematical problems vary, especially in solving non-routine problems, such as jumping task problems. These differences can be influenced by several factors, one of which is the adversity quotient. This study determined the mathematical problem-solving ability according to Polya's stages to solve jumping task problems based on students' adversity quotient. This study was conducted by involving 22 students in one of the junior high schools (SMP) in Malang Regency as research subjects. In this study, the researcher acted as the main instrument assisted by the Adversity Response Profile (ARP) questionnaire, problem-solving question sheets, and semi-structured interview guidelines. This study began with the provision of a questionnaire. Continued by working on test questions and selecting three students to conduct interviews. This study found that climber students tend to be more able to solve problems according to Polya's stages tactically and effectively, and have better verbal skills. Students have also been able to understand the issues contained in the jumping task questions. However, all students tend to skip the stage of re-examining the process and answers.

Abstract

Critical thinking is a fundamental competence in 21st-century education, particularly in mathematics, where students frequently encounter contradictory information that requires logical reasoning and reflective judgment. This study explores the stages of critical thinking among junior high school students when solving contradictory mathematical problems. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving two eighth-grade students from SMP Negeri 01 Sumber Pucung, Malang, who were selected based on their skeptical responses to illogical mathematical tasks. Data were collected through open-ended tests and interviews, then analyzed to capture reasoning patterns and problem-solving strategies. The findings revealed three distinct stages of mathematical critical thinking: (1) Initial Stage (interpretation), where anomalies are sensed; (2) Tracing Stage (analysis), where contradictions are identified; and (3) Global View Stage (evaluation and inference), where holistic reasoning and alternative solutions are proposed. Subject 1 demonstrated conceptual awareness, cognitive flexibility, and evaluative rigor, while Subject 2 showed procedural accuracy but limited inferential precision. These findings suggest that contradictory problems can serve as effective instructional tools for balancing procedural and conceptual reasoning. Practical implications highlight the need for integrating contradictory problems into mathematics instruction to promote metacognitive reflection. Future research should expand participant diversity, employ longitudinal and experimental designs, and explore affective dispositions influencing students’ critical engagement.

Abstract

Online learning experiences have been associated with reduced learning outcomes and limited student engagement in argumentation. To address this issue, the focus on teaching materials becomes crucial, especially in promoting differentiated learning to accommodate pandemic-induced learning losses. A prime candidate for enhancing argumentation skills is the study of quadrilaterals within mathematics. Mastering the quadrilateral concept and its argumentative structure is pivotal for students. Hence, the creation of student worksheets employing differentiated learning principles is imperative. This research aims to develop valid, practical, and effective quadrilateral worksheets with a focus on adversity quotient differentiation. The ADDIE model guides the development process through Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation stages. Rigorous evaluation, including expert validation (83.8% very valid), field trials (91% very practical), and N-Gain score analysis (0.73, indicating effectiveness), underscores the quality of the developed worksheets. In conclusion, the adversity quotient differentiated quadrilateral worksheets has been successfully crafted to enhance students' argumentation skills. It is deemed valid, practical, and effective in improving learning outcomes. This initiative holds potential for addressing the challenges posed by online learning and contributes to students' academic development.

Abstract

Integers are an important topic in mathematics that students must understand well. However, in practice, many students face difficulties in understanding integer operations. One way to address this issue is by using a number line manipulative that employs Dienes' steps. This research is qualitative, with a case study approach. The subjects consisted of three 6th-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The three subjects had varying mathematical abilities: high, medium, and low. The learning activities used six steps of Dienes. The instruments used were observation sheets, interview guidelines, and a test consisting of eight questions related to the addition and subtraction of integers. Data collection techniques followed the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of the study indicate that learning using Dienes' steps with integer manipulatives successfully addressed students' difficulties in performing integer operations, especially in problems involving operations with two adjacent signs.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of social arithmetic in students' social life. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach that aims to identify students' errors in solving HOTS type social arithmetic problems with the Polya procedure. The subjects of this study were grade VII students of SMP Taman Siswa Malang. Data were obtained from the results of the HOTS type social arithmetic test as many as 2 items in the form of descriptions. The results of this study are errors in the stage of understanding the problem of 30.10% and are included in the fairly high category, errors in the stage of planning problem solving of 28.28% which are included in the fairly high category, errors in the stage of carrying out problem solving plans of 06.26% and are included in the very small category, and errors in the stage of re-checking the solutions obtained of 28.68% and are included in the fairly high category. The causes of errors made by students are quite diverse, one of which is that students forget to write down information known from the questions, students are unable to analyze the existing information, students are not careful when calculating, and students are not used to re-examining what has been done.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to describe the types of errors that students make in solving absolute value equations and inequalities using Newman's theory (NEA). The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. Questions were given to 30 students of class X SMA Negeri 1 Sumberpucung. The data collection techniques in this study were the results of students' written tests and the results of interviews related to the results of students' written tests. Based on the results of the research conducted, it is known that there are no students who experience reading errors on all questions while encoding error in answers are the mistakes that most students make. This happens because when students make mistakes in understanding, students will automatically make mistakes in understanding, transforming, processing skill and encoding error. The mistakes that students make are based on their lack of understanding of the concept of absolute value. Because if students understand the existing concepts correctly, they will be able to solve various existing problems. So that teachers are advised to provide meaningful learning for students so that students do not easily forget the concept of a material. From this research, it can be concluded that the types of errors that students make are understanding, transforming, processing skill and encoding error.
