Abstract

Abstract. As one of the coastal ecosystem, coral reef ecosystem is a magnificent marine ecosystem, where their species richness and composition play an important role for the ability of coral reef ecosystem to respond to the fishing activity and other stressors, where fishing has impacted the fish community, target or non-target reef fish species. The dynamic of reef fish resources, especially the target species, become one of the aspects that must be considered in the management and utilization of the fisheries resources in the coral reef ecosystem and their surrounding area. The purpose of the study was to analyze the dynamics of the target fish in the coral reef fishing activity at the coastal area of Ternate Island, from the growth, mortality and exploitation ratio aspect. The research was conduct from April to August 2018 in the coastal area of Ternate Island. The data sampling was growth parameters data through length and weight measurement. Total sample measure along the research time was 6245 sample (consist of seven family and 11 species). The result shows that the target fish have asymptotic length (L∞) range from 263.16–483.16 mm, with growth coefficient (K) ranging from 0.61–0.92 per year. The theoretic age at length 0 (t0) ranges from minus 0.0825–0.1669 year (equal to 30-61 day). The fishing mortality rate (F) is lower than the natural mortality rate (M), which resulting the exploitation rate (E) for the target fish mostly under 50%, which indicated that the utilization of the reef fishes in the coastal area of Ternate Island is still under-exploited.Keywords: Exploitation rate, Growth parameters, Length-weight relationship, Mortality rate, Stock assessment

Abstract

The coastal area of East Lampung Regency is one of the main centers for whiteleg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) aquaculture in Lampung Province. However, the area’s shrimp production has highly fluctuated. For example, in 2019-2021, the production decreased from 10,504 tons to 5,903 tons. This study aimed to evaluate the land suitability, water and soil quality of shrimp ponds located in the coastal of East Lampung Regency which use two types of farming technology: traditional and semi-intensive or intensive. The measured parameters included: (1) physical suitability parameters: land height from sea level, land use, distance from the beach and river; (2) water quality parameters: temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and phosphate; and (3) soil quality parameters: pH and types of sediment. The level of land suitability was determined using the geographic information system (GIS) approach, in which a weighted overlay method was employed. The suitability classification of water and soil quality was based on the standard in the Decree of the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Number 75/2016. The results showed that 491.45 ha was categorized as highly suitable (S1) and suitable (S2) and 9,662.61 ha as marginally suitable (S3) for traditional farming. For semi-intensive or intensive farming were located in the S1 and S2 of 11.61 ha and S3 category of 10,416.58 ha. Water and soil quality varied in each research site but generally still met the required standard, only the water salinity of the semi-intensive/intensive did not meet the required standards of whiteleg shrimp farming. The study concludes that the location of the ponds in S3 land and the inappropriate salinity directly affect the success and stable production of shrimp farming in the area.

Abstract

The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is a protected marine biota in Indonesia. Molecular identification of sperm whales from the Sawu Sea (East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia) was carried out using the 16S rRNA gene. This study aims to validate the species of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) in Indonesia using the partial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene. The specimens used were tissue specimens from laboratory collections taken from Sawu Sea waters in 2014. The three samples were validated as Physeter microcephalus with 100% similarity. The base composition is dominated by the base thymine (31.7–31.8%) with a GC content of 42.7–42.8%. The genetic distance for the same species was 0.0015, while the highest genetic distance for Orcaella brevirostris was 0.2128. Molecular identification using the 16S rRNA gene and COI has validated the species of a sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) in Indonesia so that this genetic data can be used as a basis for sperm whale resource management and conservation.
