Abstract

The Lubuk Lampam floodplain’s ecosystem is naturally affected by the fluctuation of the water surface. This ecosystem also receives anthropogenic substances such as nutrients and other chemicals, especially from the oil palm plantation and its industrial processing activities. The main objective of this research was to determine the trophic status of the floodplain using the trophic level index (TLI) and Carlson’s trophic state index (TSI). The water quality and the fish samples were collected and analyzed from 7 stations representing various types of floodplain habitat. The results showed that the trophic status of Lubuk Lampam was hypereutrophic (very nutrient-rich). This was also supported by the high increase of the body weight (“b” value more than 3) and the high gonadosomatic index (GSI) of the studied fishes, i.e. Osteochilus vittatus 2.53-6.81% (male) and 3.00-15.86% (female); Helostoma temminckii 0.28-3.33% (male) and 1.30-10.43% (female); and Channa striata 0.33-0.59% (male) and 0.21-2.73% (female).

Abstract

Aims: This study aims to assess the value sustainable development opportunity of the coral reef fisheries activities in Indonesia from the ecological, economic, and social aspect, with a case study of coral reef fisheries at the coastal area of Ternate Island, using the Sustainability Window (SuWi) approach. Methodology and Results: The data was collected from statistical data from relevant institutions and literature study, which consists of ecological, economic and social data, and analyzed using the Sustainability Window approach to determine the sustainability of the fisheries development. The result shows that the Sustainability Window of the coral reef fisheries in the research area tends to move towards sustainable development, where the national policy in catch fisheries management has an impact on the sustainable development and management of coral reef fisheries at the coastal area of Ternate Island. Conclusion, significance and impact study: The Sustainability Window of coral reef fisheries at the coastal area of Ternate Island tends to move towards sustainable processes, with the width of sustainability window that not too narrow to the coral reef fisheries activities at the provincial and national levels. This condition attaches strings to a precautionary approach in policy decision for the management process, and consideration to the effect that can result from the development policy, both at the provincial and national level. The use of Sustainability Windows approach can provide a new simple way for assessing whether the development has been towards a more sustainable direction or not.

Abstract

A drastic increasing in Sea Surface Temperature (SST) was happened in Andaman Sea including in Aceh region from April through end of May 2010. The recent escalations of SST have caused mass coral bleaching event in many places in the world including northern Aceh water of Indonesia. Bleaching survey was conducted in Northern Aceh to measure ecological impact of bleaching including bleaching index, coral cover and reef fish abundance. More than 35% bleached coral were died, with tremendous mortality of susceptible genera such as Acropora and Pocillopora. Coral bleaching has impact in declining coral cover in Northern Aceh significantly after coral bleaching and the evidence of loss Acropora in some area. Coral bleaching also impact to coral fishes, where fishes abundance especially coralivorous fishes has declining significantly betwen 2009 and 2011 also 2013. The 2010 bleaching event is one of the most severe events reported for Indonesia including in Northern Aceh.

Abstract

Kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) is one of the important economic commodities caught in the sea waters north of East Java. The utilization rate of kawakawa is quite high, so it is necessary to regulate the sustainability of kawakawa stock to maintain it. This study aimed to evaluate the status of kawakawa fish resources by estimating population parameters and spawning potential ratio (SPR) with a fish length approach, used as a biological reference point in determining fish stock conditions. 1995 data on the length of fish were collected randomly from February to June 2021 in Pasongsongan, East Java. The ELEFFAN method was used to determine population parameters: growth, mortality, and utilization rate. SPR analysis was carried out using population and biological parameters obtained from previous studies with the LB-SPR package. The results of von Bertalanffy's growth analysis for kawakawa from this study were written with the equation Lt= 60.9 (1-e-0.41(t-0.19)). The average kawakawa caught was immature gonads (Lc<Lm), fishing pressure was also still high, and recruitment in stock was disrupted. It can be seen that the relative fishing mortality ratio (F/M) = 2.51, exploitation rate (E) = 0.71, and SPR = 20%. Therefore, it is necessary to develop effective management for the sustainability of kawakawa stocks.

Abstract

Abstract. As one of the coastal ecosystem, coral reef ecosystem is a magnificent marine ecosystem, where their species richness and composition play an important role for the ability of coral reef ecosystem to respond to the fishing activity and other stressors, where fishing has impacted the fish community, target or non-target reef fish species. The dynamic of reef fish resources, especially the target species, become one of the aspects that must be considered in the management and utilization of the fisheries resources in the coral reef ecosystem and their surrounding area. The purpose of the study was to analyze the dynamics of the target fish in the coral reef fishing activity at the coastal area of Ternate Island, from the growth, mortality and exploitation ratio aspect. The research was conduct from April to August 2018 in the coastal area of Ternate Island. The data sampling was growth parameters data through length and weight measurement. Total sample measure along the research time was 6245 sample (consist of seven family and 11 species). The result shows that the target fish have asymptotic length (L∞) range from 263.16–483.16 mm, with growth coefficient (K) ranging from 0.61–0.92 per year. The theoretic age at length 0 (t0) ranges from minus 0.0825–0.1669 year (equal to 30-61 day). The fishing mortality rate (F) is lower than the natural mortality rate (M), which resulting the exploitation rate (E) for the target fish mostly under 50%, which indicated that the utilization of the reef fishes in the coastal area of Ternate Island is still under-exploited.Keywords: Exploitation rate, Growth parameters, Length-weight relationship, Mortality rate, Stock assessment

Abstract

The Medan Sea waters are part of the Indonesian Fisheries Management Area (WPPRI 571) and serve as a fishing ground for squid (Uroteuthis spp.) for small-scale fishers based in Belawan, Medan. Information on the condition of the squid fishery in this area is limited, so a scientific study is needed to determine the status of the fishery as a basis for determining the right management approach. This study aims to assess the current condition of the squid fishery in Belawan using the six domains of indicators in the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM): fish resources, habitat, and ecosystem, fishing techniques, economic, social, and institutional. Data were collected through various techniques including direct sampling of squid, in-depth interviews, questionnaires, and secondary data collection. The results showed that the highest value was owned by the fishing technique domain at 280 (good category) and the lowest domain fish resource domain with 168 as a poor category. The low score was due to a decrease in catches and a change in the fishing location. Meanwhile, the aggregate calculation results show that all domains of the Belawan-Medan EAFM are 195 (medium category). This means that some tactical decisions are needed in squid fisheries management in this region. Keywords: EAFM, Medan waters, Small scale fishery, Squid, WPP 571.
