Abstract

Background: Diarrhea that could be caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli can be prevented by increasing hand hygiene using alcohol-based hand rub, but frequent use might cause skin irritation. Replacing alcohol with herbs could avoid this side effect. Cloves have been proved to have antibacterial properties. However, most researches used complex extraction methods that might not be applicable on a household scale. Objective: To prove that clove extracts have ability to inhibit and to kill S. aureus and E. coli. Methods: This is an experimental study by using post-test only control group design. Clove extract was obtained with simple aqueous maceration. Samples were Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 allocated into six groups: clove extracts at concentrations of 12.5%, 25%, 50%, 100% respectively; 70% alcohol as a positive control; and aquadest as a negative control. Each group was given 5 repetitions of intervention. MIC was measured with dilution method, while MBC with streak method. Negative controls were only used to monitor the quality of this work. Results: MIC of S. aureus was started at 50% concentration of clove extract, while MBC of S. aureus was started at 25 % concentration of the same extract. MIC and MBC of E. coli was both started at 25% concentration of clove extract. MIC and MBC of 100% concentration of clove extract were equal with 70% alcohol. Conclusion: Concentration of 100% clove extracts have similar ability with 70% alcohol to inhibit and to kill S. aureus and E. coli. Keywords: Clove Extracts, Escherichia coli, MBC, MIC, Staphylococcus aureus

Abstract

Community health problem(s) needs to be solved collaboratively among the health care team. Interprofessional Education (IPE) is implemented to facilitate health students to collaborate before they join in the working world. The purpose of this study was to identify the experience of students, lecturers, and family members in the implementation of IPE in a community setting. All (465) sixth semester medical, nursing, and nutrition students in the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Diponegoro participated in the IPE program. Each small group contains 4-5 students who worked together in the community setting to identify family health problems, implement interventions, and evaluate the results. Focus Group Discussion (FGD) was conducted to evaluate the implementation. Twenty-four medical, nursing, and nutrition students, eight lecturers, and five family members were involved in this study. FGD was conducted separately among groups. The implementation is divided into four phases, namely, preparation, process, evaluation, and benefit. Unclear competencies and roles-responsibilities of each student in the program was the most problem faced during preparation, while obstacles during the process were difficult to set a schedule among team members. Conducting an objective assessment of both methods and tools needs to be concerned in the evaluation phase. However, students, lecturers, and family members appreciated the program and preferred to sustain the program. IPE can be implemented in a community setting to solve health problems and it can facilitate students to collaborate in a team, but it needs to be settled including preparation, process, and evaluation.

Abstract

Soil transmitted helminth infections (STHI) are prevalent among elementary school children in Indonesia. The nutritional impairments that an infection can cause have their consequences for the children’s development and health. This study aimed to determine children’s knowledge and behaviour in relation to the prevalence of STHI among elementary school children in Jepara, a rural regency in Indonesia. The study intended to evaluate the effectiveness of the current elimination program for STHI in this area. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 132 children from eight elementary schools in Mlonggo, Jepara. The research population consisted of children aged eight to ten years old. During September and October 2018, the research population was obtained by consecutive sampling. Information about the children’s knowledge and behaviour regarding STHI was collected using a questionnaire. Stool samples were collected to determine STHI prevalence. Analysis was done using chi-squared and Spearman’s rho tests. Out of 132 children examined, no children had STHI. Scores on STHI knowledge were most often low (51.5%), while scores on behaviour were mostly average (67.4%). Statistical analysis showed that residence was significantly associated with the level of knowledge about STHI (P = 0.007). Additionally, gender (P = 0.002) and a previous STHI (P = 0.041) were significantly associated with the children’s behaviour concerning STHI. This study revealed inadequate knowledge and behaviour concerning STHI in elementary school children in Mlonggo, Jepara. Even though the prevalence of STHI was 0% in the study population, a proper health education program to teach children about STHI is still necessary.
