Abstract

This research discusses the shift of the Tae' language through a case study of language attitudes and language usage in the city of Palopo, South Sulawesi. The Tae' language, as the identity of the Luwu people, in this case, the city of Palopo, is rarely used as the daily communication language of the people of Palopo. The use of the language in the family environment, which should be the closest domain to the regional language, has also been replaced. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative method. This study uses the instrument Cohn et al. (2013) in the form of scoring and social factors that can contribute to attitudes. Data analysis of language attitude employing the concepts of Garvin and Mathiot which encompass characteristics such as language loyalty, language pride, and awareness of linguistic norms. Based on the analysis of the data, the researcher found that the Tae' language as the regional language of the people of Palopo or Luwu has experienced a shift. The people in the city of Palopo have a positive attitude towards the Tae' language, but its usage is still minimal, even within the family domain. The Indonesian language dominates the language usage among the people. The positive language attitude does not align with the positive language usage, and it can even be negative in its usage.

Abstract

Lexical bundles are essential for creating coherent academic writing and for forming high-quality research articles. Researchers have previously examined lexical bundles in a number of academic fields and sections. However, there is a lack of investigation on cross-disciplinary comparisons in research article abstracts. Thus, this study seeks to examine the utilization of lexical bundles (LBs) in abstracts across disciplines. The analysis used a corpus-based study design to investigate the frequency, structural patterns, and function distributions of lexical bundles in abstracts across disciplines categorized as soft sciences (Linguistics, ELT, Psychology) and hard sciences (Electronic Engineering, Medicine, Biochemistry). To guarantee the representativeness of high-impact research articles, 180 abstracts of research articles, 30 from each discipline were chosen from high-citation Scopus-indexed journals. A descriptive quantitative approach was employed within Biber's (2004) structural taxonomy and Hyland's (2008b) functional classification, along with other categories to provide comprehensive understanding of LBs manifestations. The results indicate significant disciplinary commonalities in LB usage albeit numerous noticeable variations. A bias for phrasal over clausal constructs was observed in the structural use of bundles in both the Hard and Soft Sciences, with noun phrase-based bundles being the most prevalent. In terms of functionality, research-oriented bundles predominated in both domains, with Soft Sciences preferring description bundles and Hard Sciences stressing topic bundles. This study sheds light on disciplinary conventions in abstract writing and emphasizes the significance of understanding the structural and functional differences in LBs in cross-disciplinary engagement and effective academic communication.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze lexical variation between Baduy and Priangan Sundanese and to explain how sociocultural factors shape lexical choices, language use, and speaker identity. A qualitative approach with a descriptive–comparative design was employed. Data were collected through observation, interviews, natural conversation recordings, and document analysis involving native speakers in Kanekes (Baduy) and the Priangan region (Bandung, Tasikmalaya, Garut, and Cianjur). The data were analyzed through data reduction, comparative data display, and lexical analysis using theoretical frameworks from contact linguistics and ecolinguistics to examine the influence of isolation, modernization, and language contact. The findings reveal that Baduy Sundanese preserves archaic vocabulary (e.g., kula, kakang), distinctive particles (mah, pan, teh), and specific semantic distinctions, such as the meaning of saung as a primary dwelling. In contrast, Priangan Sundanese reflects modernization and codification through the use of more standardized forms and stronger influence from Indonesian. Additional differences were observed in phonology (vowel lengthening), morphology (retention of traditional derivational forms), syntax (frequent subject/object omission), and levels of Indonesian interference. Sociocultural factors underlying these variations include the geographical isolation of the Baduy community, strong adherence to tradition, politeness norms, and the Priangan community’s openness to modern education and external contact. Overall, lexical choices function as markers of linguistic identity: the Baduy community demonstrates linguistic conservatism as a form of resistance to homogenization, whereas Priangan speakers exhibit adaptation to modernity. These findings contribute to studies on Sundanese variation, contact linguistics, and ecolinguistics, while supporting efforts to preserve endangered dialects.

Abstract

This study analyzes exclamatory constructions in Sundanese folktales (narrative genre), 9,005 tokens from 30 texts through corpus-driven and functional-typological frameworks. Findings reveal that directive particles (hayu), intensifiers (pisan, teuing), and interjections (duh, yeuh)—not generic emotional terms—dominate exclamatory usage, reflecting communal pragmatics. The particle hayu (7 instances), as in “Hayu urang buru embe!” (“Let’s chase the goat!”), merges mobilization with collective urgency through syntactic patterns: direct action, metaphorical appeals (“paganteng-ganteng tunangan!” = “most handsome fiancés!”), and elliptical structures. Intensifiers like pisan (29 instances) amplify affective states (“Haus pisan!” = “So thirsty!”), while reduplication (alus-alus teuing = “so beautiful!”) heightens emotive emphasis. Interjections (duh, yeuh) anchor climactic moments through performative incompleteness (“Duh, Gusti...” = “Oh, God…”). Hybrid interrogative-exclamatives (“Naha anjeun teu éra...?!” = “How dare you?!”) and imperative-exclamatives (“Kudu make akal!” = “Use your brain!”) blur grammatical boundaries, prioritizing cultural intent over syntax. These constructions challenge Eurocentric mood models, instead encoding communal ethics, moral critique, and oral tradition aesthetics. The study underscores exclamatives as cultural-linguistic acts vital to sustaining Sundanese narrative identity, advocating context-sensitive approaches in indigenous language pedagogy and folklore preservation.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate rhetorical strategies for employing interactive meta-discourse aspects in the introductions of highly cited Scopus-indexed research publications from two separate academic fields: applied linguistics and electrical engineering. The study analyzed thirty Scopus-indexed journal articles from each of the two fields. To achieve the research purpose, the researchers employ a descriptive quantitative design with comparative corpus analysis. This research used Hyland's (2005) taxonomy, which consists of five subtypes of interactive metadiscourse: transition markers, frame markers, endophoric markers, evidentials, and code glosses, as the theoretical analysis. The findings indicate that both disciplines employ these features to establish coherence and cohesion; notable disparities arise in their distribution and rhetorical roles. Applied linguistics articles demonstrate a greater utilization of evidential and coding glosses, indicative of their narrative and intertextual focus. In contrast, articles on electrical engineering prominently utilize transition and endophoric markers, which signify a procedural and experimental methodology. This study illustrates the importance of genre awareness and epistemic tradition in academic writing instruction across several fields.

Abstract

Research article introduction is crucial in justifying a research topic and presenting the significant contribution of a study to the advancement of knowledge. Prior studies have attempted to investigate research article introductions from various viewpoints. However, the way novice Indonesian authors rhetorically construct their introductions is still under-explored. This study aims to explore cross-disciplinary introductions with regard to rhetorical move structure and the linguistic realizations of the moves. Employing Swale’s (2004) revised CARS model, a corpus of 10 research articles from the fields of soft and hard science were analyzed. The findings revealed that the two disciplines were in agreement on the compulsory status of Move 1 Establishing a territory and Move 3 Presenting the present work and the conventional use of Move 2 Establishing a niche. However, discrepancies arose in the step level. Regarding the linguistic features, soft and hard science authors preferred using present tense and active voice in realizing the moves. In addition, a considerable number of metadiscourse such as hedges and boosters were observed in the introductions. This study concludes that novice Indonesian authors’ disciplinary expertise possibly influences the quality of their introductions.

Abstract

This study used narrative inquiry to reveal the identity construction process performed by an Indonesian EFL novice teacher through her personal experiences in a senior high school context that is still rarely explored. The interview results revealed that the teacher developed Johnston's framework based on the following three aspects of the teacher's identity: teacher-student relationship, professionalism, and religious beliefs. The results showed that the novice teacher always prioritized academic assistance for students in teacher-student relationships. In terms of professionalism, she saw it as service-oriented. Thus, she always strived to be a better teacher to her students. She also instilled religious values in her English classes. She believed instilling positive values could help socially responsible individuals. It is suggested that future research would use a solid and clear framework regarding the novice teacher's identity construction to make the research process more organized and extend some informative inputs in narrative inquiry research.
