Abstract

As the product of culture and the background of human activities, architecture that constructs place-identity are in a state of constant modification. This paper explores the dynamic development of architecture of a vernacular landscape since the time when external power of colonialization introduced new ideas, techniques and construction methods to the more traditional know how. A case study in Bali is analyzed through historical research involving document and policy analysis, in depth interview with key informants, observation and building surveys. The result shows that prior to colonization era, the island was developed based on local building codes called Hasta Kosala-Kosali that is written on traditional lontar leaf manuscripts. New political system as well as business interests are two main factors influencing the transformation of architectural-identity of the island in the colonial and post-colonial era to date. The physical identity is among the main charms of the Island of Bali. In order to maintain the attractiveness of the island, the public and private sector should work together with the community in establishing policies regarding the physical development of Bali. Keywords: Architectural identity, tradition, post-colonialism, hasta kosala-kosali

Abstract

As a setting of life and cultural products made by humans, settlements always undergo transformation along with the dynamics of their inhabitants’ lives. The dynamics of occupants, in addition to being impacted by the development of local knowledge, changes in the way humans respond to climate, and cultural transformation, are also influenced by external factors. External factors that influence settlement transformation can arise in the form of urbanisation, changes in social and political systems, economics, and technological development. In traditional societies, natural threats are predictable and conquerable. The transformation of settlements can take place in the same frame, promoting natural considerations, or in a different frame with the existence of new ideas and knowledge and technology coming from the outside. To be able to understand the transformation of traditional settlements and their transformations in relation to disaster vulnerability, this paper evaluated the causing factors, patterns, and consequences resulted from the transformation of settlements. For this reason, urban morphological studies are applied as an evaluation method. The results of the evaluation of settlement transformations reveal that traditional settlements are farther away leaving natural-harmony patterns at the root of their existence. Economic approach has replaced the cosmological-based settlement. It is recommended that natural site characteristic should be taken into consideration in order to avoid natural disaster in the future. This means that the traditional approach is still relevant in contemporary situation. Keywords: Traditional settlements; transformation; disaster vulnerablity

Abstract

Every place on the planet has unique characters that make it distinguishable from other sites. Place-identity is the term widely accepted to explain this phenomenon. It is argued that the place-identity could not only strengthen the sense of belonging of the locals to a place and improve social cohesion but, in the age of global tourism, it could also increase the attractiveness of the place to visitors. Therefore, it contains economic values if managed in a proper way. But places are transforming. The dynamics of contemporary activities where tradition is seen as outdated, new government system, new economic activities, and new actors and their roles challenge the stability of place-identity. Unfortunately, the transformation of a place may benefit some actors but may trouble other groups.  Some places, however, maintain their place-identity for the social and economic values it holds. Collaboration among different actors in managing the transformation of such place could maintain the place-identity of a place which ensures its attractiveness to visitors, sustains its economic values amidst rapid changes.  The collaboration confirms no one is left behind.  The case study research conducted in Sanur showed that the sustained place-identity could economically benefit all actors.

Abstract

The Teges Subak group and the Subak Putungan group face problems in controlling pests and diseases in rice and secondary crops. In rice plants farmers are very disadvantaged by attacks of pests and diseases that cause rice plants to become puso (empty grains and red stems). The attack of pests and diseases causes rice production to decrease by more than 50%, which is very detrimental to farmers in Subak Teges and Subak Putungan. The main objectives of the program to implement appropriate technology to the community of these farmer groups are (1) To help farmers in integrated pest and disease control technology, (2) Providing productive rice planting techniques, (3) Providing training in the manufacture of locally based plant-based pesticides, (4)Providing techniques for making biological pesticides based on Trichoderma sp, Metharizium sp, and Glyocladium sp, (5) Providing techniques for the application of vegetable and biological pesticides to rice plants, (6) Training farmers in the technique of monitoring pests and diseases in the field. The method used is counseling, training and mentoring. The expected outcome of this community-based application of appropriate technology activities is; 80% of farmers understand and are skilled in making vegetable and biological pesticides, 90% of farmers understand and are skilled in implementing integrated pest and disease control technology and 90% of farmers understand and are skilled in monitoring pests and diseases in the field, farmers are able to produce 50 liters of vegetable pesticides themselves, farmers are able to produce50 kg of their own biological pesticides, attacks of pests and diseases have decreased by 75%.

Abstract

This physical product continues to transform, shaped by and shape its inhabitants. City transformation is a necessity as a response to changes and the dynamics of the people who inhabit it. The transformation is also a testament to the city's resilience to the various events it experienced during its lifespan. In this paper, the reactions and changes of the city and its inhabitants to the COVID-19 pandemic are evaluated. At the initial stage, various literature that discussed architecture and urban design responses to the pandemic were examined. Next, I will evaluate my personal experience when I was diagnosed as a patient exposed to the virus. In the third stage, the evaluation is continued with the development of the city before the period until the time of the pandemic. Denpasar is selected as a case in point. From there, reflection on urban design and architecture is carried out to see the components of settlements that help or hinder the spread of the virus. In the last stage, the elements that have changed during the pandemic will be analysed. The results of the analysis show that the outbreak of the virus that has caused so much chaos has prompted, even forced, many human activities to be readjusted. Traditional architecture and settlements provide examples of physical forms that are adaptive to various disasters. However, that does not mean we have to go back to the past because life continues into the future. The ability of a city to fulfil its own needs in several respects, especially the fulfilment of basic needs, the use of technology to make people connected to each other and with their physical settings, and accessibility to health facilities are important keywords in addition to improving the quality of the urban environment in general. Keywords: architectural transformation, covid-19 pandemic, urban resilience

Abstract

The Revitalization Policy for Traditional Market Buildings often leads to mismatches between the designed space and its actual use. Many market facilities remain underutilised, while new informal spaces emerge in inappropriate locations. This highlights the need to reassess the design process and understand how revitalization policies impact Traditional-Modern Market planners. This research investigates the influence of existing policies on resolving design issues when modernising traditional market buildings. Using multiple case studies, specifically Badung Market and Banyuasri Market in Bali, the research collects data from design drawing archives provided by consultants and government agencies. These archival studies are compared with observations of user behaviour. Additionally, interviews with space planners, including two architectural consultants and four government officials from the Industry and Trade Service and the Public Works Service, were conducted. The qualitative analysis aims to construct the "conceived space" envisioned by the planners and identify factors causing the gap between planners and users. The findings reveal that not only the Traditional Market revitalization policy but also decisions by other authorities significantly affect space production. Factors influencing space production in public buildings like Modern-Traditional Markets include regulations, public policies, and regional vision and mission
