Abstract

Sanga Mandala is a concept that divide the layout of lowland Balinese house into nine zones. The intersection of two main axes, the ritual axis and the natural axis, forms the concept of Sanga Mandala. These axes have two poles called hulu/luan (mountain direction) and teben (sea direction). Along with times, the realization of Sanga Mandala in the form of buildings and zoning underwent a transformation in response to the increase in household members, modern mindset of the citizen, and tendency to follow contemporary trends. Changes to the zoning system that still follow the rules of traditional Balinese architecture are zones of sacred and ritual functions. With the development of modern mindset of the citizen, we can find those phenomena in Denpasar. This study aimed at examining the meaning of luan and teben on Balinese ethnic house layout in Denpasar. There is an interesting phenomenon that relates to the meaning of luan and teben in contemporary life. This study used interpretative naturalistic research method by emphasizing the empirical aspects of sensual, ethical, emic, logical, and transcendental. The results showed that there was a pattern of meaning on luan and teben in the conception of zoning, transformation of spaces and buildings, orientation of the building mass, as well as producing a pattern of meaning in zoning and ritual functions as the most important part in the residential space layout of Balinese ethnic houses in the midst of the development of Denpasar. DOI: https://doi.org/10.26905/lw.v12i2.4276

Abstract

ABSTRACT The concept of Banyan space (spaces under Banyan tree) possesses both secular and ritual values. Secular values are related to the use of space for socio-economic activities, such as trading to others and meeting with friends. Ritual values are related to activities that take place around the Banyan tree as an expression of belief on the tree’s “tenget” (sacred) values. Secular and ritual values create the concept of space on Banyan tree, based on the elements of space and the conception used of these spaces. A system of signs (signifier and signified) mark the values or meanings of “sekala” and “niskala” space. This research aims to find out the elements that create the “sekala” and “niskala” space by analysing the space system of signifier and signified. “Sekala” is tangible or visible space which can be perceived by five senses. “Niskala” is intangible or invisible space, yet it exists and Balinese Hindus believe in its presence. The research focuses on the system of activities from selected cases by purposive sampling using qualitative naturalistic method and approach. The results of this research emphasize that (1) there are elements (signifier and signified) that create the “sekala” and “niskala” space and (2) there are normative and scientific concepts of Banyan trees as the background for the creation of the “sekala” and niskala space. Keywords: sekala space, niskala space, secular and ritual values, signifier and signified space

Abstract

Abstract:. Beach spaces in Bali, for traditional communities are very important and are part of their ritual life cycle. Open space on the beach is very important because it can accommodate many religious, social, cultural and ritual activities. The many social levels of the community come together to use the area on the beach to carry out various kinds of activities, to produce spaces and areas that are architecturally formulated and their meanings. The communal space setting on the object of research is intended to find out whether communal space already exists or is newly formed after various activities are present. Or the space has never existed, even though there are indeed private spaces that have been acknowledged by users and providers of tourist accommodation that were present later. The method used is descriptive qualitative method by thinking logically, structured and creatively, by mapping activities based on time segments and interviews. Formulate problems by describing the problem into smaller and more manageable segments, identifying patterns, solving complex problems into small steps, organizing and making a series of steps to provide solutions, and construct data representations through simulation. Keyword: Public Space Conflict, Space Pattern, Meaning of Space.

Abstract

Spatial transformation and building layout of Balinese ethnic dwellings are influenced by the need for residential space and the occupants of the house. The increase in the number of family members in one dwelling impacts increasing the space for living. The development of architectural style as a trend is another factor that changes building layout. This change is a process from the initial state - the spatial and building layout concept of sanga mandala - towards contemporary architecture. These changes are characterized by architectural elements that are subject to change, and the elements that are persistent to change. This research aims to examine the meaning of dualism in the residents of ethnic Balinese residences as a transformation process. The method used in this research is qualitative content analysis, with demographic, economic, and architectural trends approaches and perspectives. The interpretation resulted from the occupants' perceptions of transforming the Balinese ethnic residence in Denpasar. This study's findings are the process of changing the spatial planning and architectural structure of Balinese ethnic houses based on the fundamental concept of dualism in a sanga mandala spatial layout through demographic, economic, and developmental approaches to Balinese architectural trends.
