Abstract

Abstract

The Revitalization Policy for Traditional Market Buildings often leads to mismatches between the designed space and its actual use. Many market facilities remain underutilised, while new informal spaces emerge in inappropriate locations. This highlights the need to reassess the design process and understand how revitalization policies impact Traditional-Modern Market planners. This research investigates the influence of existing policies on resolving design issues when modernising traditional market buildings. Using multiple case studies, specifically Badung Market and Banyuasri Market in Bali, the research collects data from design drawing archives provided by consultants and government agencies. These archival studies are compared with observations of user behaviour. Additionally, interviews with space planners, including two architectural consultants and four government officials from the Industry and Trade Service and the Public Works Service, were conducted. The qualitative analysis aims to construct the "conceived space" envisioned by the planners and identify factors causing the gap between planners and users. The findings reveal that not only the Traditional Market revitalization policy but also decisions by other authorities significantly affect space production. Factors influencing space production in public buildings like Modern-Traditional Markets include regulations, public policies, and regional vision and mission

Abstract

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic significantly impacted Peliatan Traditional Village, Ubud, which relied heavily on tourism. The drastic drop in visitors triggered economic hardship and affected community health. Recognizing untapped local potential, this program introduced herbal plant cultivation and biopore technology as sustainable alternatives for improving health and livelihood. Objective: To build community capacity in cultivating herbal plants and managing household organic waste through biopores, thus supporting long-term health, economic resilience, and environmental sustainability.Method: The program involved 30 PKK (Family Welfare Movement) members through education on herbal plants, cultivation techniques, health applications, and hands-on biopore construction. Pre- and post-tests, along with field mentoring, were conducted to assess impact.Result: Participants’ knowledge increased by 35%. All created biopore holes at home, and 20% harvested compost within three months. The initiative also sparked interest in continuing herbal cultivation independently. Conclusion: Education on herbal use and biopore application proved effective in enhancing health awareness and environmental practices. This program represents an initial step toward post-pandemic village resilience based on local resourcesKeyword: COVID-19; community service; herbal plants; health; bio pore

Abstract

At the time this paper started being written, the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic had been taking place for more than a year. To date, it has caused fear in society because the number of deaths it causes is nearly 3 million people, the effectiveness of the vaccines being developed is uncertain and there is no convincing drug available. As a result, the virus having hit almost all countries and regions around the world has affected the way humans behave and will have an impact on the architectural design and urban spaces in which humans live. This paper explores the possible criteria for architectural design and urban design in response to a pandemic, particularly in Bali. Plural society serves as the characteristic of the island whose inhabitants have traditional activities mixed with modern trends. The mixed society has a rich tradition of communal living with social activities involving large masses of people. To produce post pandemic design criteria, this study critically reviewed recent publications including peer-reviewed articles, journals, and expert’s blog posts. In the next stage, the results of the review were used to evaluate activity patterns and fostered environment at several locations in Bali. The locations observed included traditional houses in Ubud, urban houses in Denpasar, offices, and traditional markets. Secondary data were organised into several themes. Meanwhile, field observations were focused on the possibility of implementing Health protocols in different places as well as community compliance in complying with them. This study found that during the period of limiting community activities due to the pandemic, health, safety and environmental hygiene had received the attention of all groups. The study also revealed that the built environment tried to make many adjustments. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of these adjustments is questionable. For this reason, further research that will produce new built spaces needs to be carried out. It will result in the need for more detailed design criteria as a mechanism to prevent the spread of the virus.
