Abstract

The tricolored langur (Presbytis cruciger) is not only geographically restricted but is also believed to strongly depend on specific habitat types, particularly wetland ecosystems in northern Borneo. Despite its limited range and potential vulnerability, no comprehensive habitat assessment has been conducted within its distribution area. This study aims to model the habitat suitability of P. cruciger in the Danau Sentarum landscape using environmental variables derived from direct encounter data collected between 2021 and 2023, and analyzed using MaxEnt. Habitat suitability modeling revealed that 95.94% (228,658 ha) of the total study area (238,329 ha) was classified as unsuitable habitat. The remaining areas were categorized as marginally suitable (7,080 ha), suitable (1,977 ha), and highly suitable (614 ha). Highly suitable areas are concentrated in peat swamp forests, riparian forests, and lowland secondary forests located within 1 km of lake edges, extending into the hilly zones of the Danau Sentarum landscape. Among the environmental predictors, land cover contributed the most to the model, though it showed low permutation importance. In contrast, proximity to fire hotspots demonstrated high permutation importance, indicating an avoidance behavior towards fire-prone areas. The species preferred elevations ranging from 100 to 200 meters above sea level, with 8–25% slopes, and proximity to swamp forest and lake ecosystems. These results highlight the species' strong association with wetland ecosystems and underscore the importance of conserving these habitats to ensure its survival.

Abstract

The cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) utilizing landfill sites for foraging is not a new or rare phenomenon. However, to date, there is no scientific data on the presence of cattle egrets in landfill areas on a national scale. This study aimed to determine the abundance dynamics of cattle egrets at the Jatibarang landfill. Data collection on individual count dynamics was carried out using the Concentration Count method. Initially, this method involved identifying strategic areas to facilitate counting individual birds in each Active Zone. Bird censuses were conducted from 06:00 to 18:00 WIB using hourly photographic documentation. Data on the dynamics of cattle egret abundance in each Active Zone were tabulated using Microsoft Excel 2016, and graphs were produced to show the average number of individuals during the study. The results showed that the abundance dynamics varied among Active Zones, influenced by the status of waste disposal activities, which affected the availability of abundant food. The distribution patterns and utilization levels of cattle egrets in the three Active Zones differed due to variations in waste conditions, influencing the number and types of insects (larvae and adults). Active Zone 1 was intensively used by cattle egrets, with numbers reaching between 140 and 1505 individuals.

Abstract

Changes in plankton community structure can be an indicator of environmental changes due to oil pollution.. Oil pollution occurs along the coast of the Tambling Wildlife Nature Conservation (TWNC) area. This research aims to determine the plankton structure community including: abundance, diversity index, evennes index and dominance index in the TWNC area. There are 4 classes of phytoplankton in aquatic areas, namely Cyanophyceae, Chlorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, and Dinophyceae. There are 7 classes of zooplankton in waters, namely: Protozoa, Rotifera, Crustacea, Nematoda, Polychaeta, Gastropoda and Diptera. Phytoplankton ranged 708,694 – 14,295,651 cells/m3, diversity index 0.38 – 1.64 (medium), evennes index 0.14 – 0.75 (medium to high) and a dominance index 0.29 – 0.88. Zooplankton abundance ranged 6000 – 142,609 cells/m3, diversity index 0.9 – 1.77 (medium), evenness index 0.5 – 0.91 (medium to high) and dominance index 0.19 – 0.58. The presence of plankton in the TWNC area is not influenced by oil waste contamination because at the time of the research no exposure to oil waste was found..

Abstract

The Greater Bird-of-Paradise (Paradisaea apoda) is a bird that performs a courtship display (lekking) to attract females during the mating season. The objective of this study was to examine the display behavior of adult and sub-adult males on lek trees as a learning process by a sub-adult and identify the lek trees. The research was conducted in the Tunas Timber Lestari Ltd. Production Forest in central mainland Papua, in a non-breeding season. After a lek tree was found, a video recording was conducted. Analysis was performed from the video. The lek tree was an emergent species with a dense canopy. An adult male was observed to perform a dance display in front of sub-adult males, even in the absence of females. When adult males performed display, the sub-adult were observed the adult males in an upside-down position. The sub-adult also danced, but not as complete as the adult, suggesting that there was a learning process by the sub-adult. This study revealed that the sub-adult/young males of the bird-of-paradise has the ability to dance inherit from their fathers, and then perfect the dance through practice and watching adults. The lek tree surely need to be protected for the survival for this species.

Abstract

Banggai cardinalfish (Pterapogon kauderni) is a commercial ornamental fish originated and endemic to Banggai Islands of Indonesia. The objective of this paper was (a) to examine the sequence and the reasons to include Banggai cardinalfish into CITES Appendix II by USA and again by European Union, (b) to explain the responds (policy and actions) by Indonesian Government, and (c) to analyse the impact of the international and national policies related to CITES decisions. Basically, USA and EU claimed that the exploitation of Banggai cardinalfish for export was over-harvested and unsustainable, and thus they proposed to include the species into CITES Appendix II. The Government of Indonesia considered that the species has been appropriately managed in accordance to sustainable yield, and thus this species no need to include in the CITES Appendix II. To ensure its sustainability, the Government has issued a number of activities and interventions, among other, imposing limited access to harvest area, establishment of breeding operations, study of its natural population as well as development of a national action plan. After a long process involving various institutions, Bangai cardinalfish was decided not to be included in CITES Appendix II. Conservation measures, however, need to be continued by Indonesian Government to make sure that the population and the trade of Banggai cardinalfish will be sustainable in the future.

Abstract

Kaledupa Atoll is one of the areas designated as a marine protection zone and local use zone in Wakatobi National Park. Spatial information on the benthic habitat of Kaledupa Atoll is very limited so that this information is expected to be a support in strategies and efforts to conserve marine biodiversity. This study aims to map the benthic habitat of Kaledupa Atoll using a pixel-based and object-based guided classification method/OBIA with a support vector machine (SVM) algorithm. The data used is the Sentinel-2 satellite image with a spatial resolution of 10 x10 m which was acquired on November 4, 2019. Observations of benthic habitats were carried out directly at the study site by placing quadrant transects and taking points on the dominant or homogeneous habitat area. The transect used is 100 x 100 cm2. Image classification uses thematic layer input from field data. The results of the classification of benthic habitats are grouped into six classes. Based on the OBIA method, benthic habitats can be mapped with an accuracy rate of 78.1%, while the pixel-based classification has an overall accuracy of 61.8%. Classification of benthic habitats with the SVM algorithm using the OBIA method provides better information than the pixel-based method.
