Abstract

Changes in forest cover from forest to non-forest systems alter habitat structure and resource availability, thereby affecting the functional composition of bird communities. This study aimed to identify and compare the structure of avian feeding guilds along a forest successional gradient in the lowland forest of Manokwari. Bird surveys were conducted using repeated point counts acrosssix habitat types representing early (mixed shrub and agricultural habitats), intermediate (mixed plantation and young secondary forest), and late successional (old secondary and primary forest). Species were classified into feeding guilds based on their primary food. Guild species richness and relative abundance were calculated, and the effects of habitat succession on guild abundance wereanalysed using a negative binomial generalized linear mixed model. A total of 55 species belonging to 15 feeding guilds were recorded. Aerial frugivores contributed the highest proportion of species richness (21.82%), whereas insectivore–nectarivore showed the highest relative abundance (21.67%), followed by arboreal frugivores (20.77%) and nectarivores (20.31%). Bird abundance was markedly higher in intermediate and late successional habitats than in early successional habitats, indicating greater trophic resource availability in more structurally complex vegetation. The GLMM revealed significant effects of habitat succession (Wald χ² = 48.32, p < 0.001) and feeding guild (Wald χ² = 331.93, p < 0.001) on bird abundance, demonstrating a functional shift in trophic guild dominance along the successional gradient. These findings highlight the importance of intermediate and late successional forests in maintaining functional diversity and supporting key ecosystem processes in tropical lowland forests.

Abstract

In Indonesia, peri-urban landscapes are rapidly developing and characterized by mosaics of natural, agricultural, and developed areas. This study investigated the effects of environmental differences across an urbanization gradient on bird community structure and the composition of ecomorphological traits within the tropical peri-urban landscape of Bogor, Indonesia. Field surveys were carried out between September and February from 2020 to 2023 in five habitats: secondary forest, plantation, riparian, built-up area, and farmland. Habitat conditions were characterized using Leaf Area Index (LAI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), land-cover composition, and vegetation measurements. Bird communities were evaluated through standardized point-countsurveys and the calculation of diversity indices. Relationships between habitat variables and bird ecomorphological traits were assessed using Generalized Linear Mixed Models (GLMMs) and modelbased fourth-corner analysis. In total, 19,637 individuals representing 77 species and 35 families were recorded. Species richness was greatest in secondary forest and lowest in farmland, while the Shannon–Wiener index declined from 3.136 to 2.218 along the gradient from less disturbed to more modified habitats. Tree species richness emerged as a key predictor of several ecomorphological traits. Structurally complex habitats favored arboreal, frugivorous, nectarivorous, and cavity-nesting birds, whereas farmland and built-up areas were dominated by generalist, aerial, and omnivorous species. These patterns indicate that vegetation simplification may drive ecological filtering and functional homogenization. Therefore, in tropical urban environments with rapid urbanization, conservation should emphasize the preservation of remnant trees, enhancement of multilayered vegetation, and restoration of riparian corridors to boost habitat variability and connectivity for bird conservation.

Abstract

Habitat edges modify environmental conditions and species interactions; nonetheless, their impact on bird communities in tropical plantation landscapes is still not well comprehended. This study examined bird community responses to edge formation in sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) plantations in Kediri, East Java, Indonesia. Bird surveys were conducted using point counts across sengon interior, agroforestry edge, and pineapple plantation edge. Species diversity was compared using Hutcheson’s t-test, and feeding guild was analyzed using PERMANOVA. A total of 30 bird species from 20 families and 2,338 individuals were detected. The sengon interior supported the highest species richness (26 species) and diversity (H′ = 2.463), compared with 22 species (H′ = 2.335) at the agroforestry edge and 22 species (H′ = 2.162) at the pineapple edge, though not significantly different (p > 0.05). The lowest encounter rates occurred in the interior (75.3 ± 6.9 individuals/hour), and higher rates occurred at the agroforestry edge (81.2 ± 9.5) and the pineapple edge (79.7 ± 7.4). Feeding guild differed among habitats(PERMANOVA, p = 0.003), although pairwise comparisons were not statistically significant (p = 0.100–0.106). Arboreal insectivores prevailed at the agroforestry edge (22.7%), aerial insectivores at the pineapple edge (18.2%), and both guilds were equally dominant in the interior (19.2%). These results indicate that sengon plantation areas maintain ecological importance for supporting both taxonomic and functional aspects of bird diversity in agricultural environments. Preserving habitat quality and supplementary habitat resources in neighboring areas might further strengthen the ecological function of sengon plantation patches in bird conservation.
