Abstract

This study analyzes the relationship between social and ecological aspects of agricultural activities in Bonthula Village, Gorontalo Regency. Most of the community relies on maize cultivation as the main commodity, but diversification into perennial crops such as nutmeg, durian, rambutan, cloves, coconut, cocoa, and avocado is also practiced tomaintain soil balance and increase income. The community's ecological awareness is reflected in their understanding of the benefits of perennial crops in improving soil fertility, maintaining moisture, and preventing degradation caused by monoculture maize. The village government supports these practices through perennial crop seed assistance programs aimed at promoting ecosystem sustainability and improving farmers' welfare. This research adopts a descriptive approach with data triangulation from interviews, observations, and document studies. The analysis reveals that the integration of perennial crop diversification and local policy support positively impacts the socio-economic and ecological aspects of Bonthula Village. This community-based agricultural management model can serve as a reference for implementing sustainable practices in other regions facing similar challenges.

Abstract

E The integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles into e-procurement systems offers a pathway to achieving sustainable public procurement in Indonesia. This study explores relevant ESG criteria and formulates strategies to enhance the capacity of procurement personnel in implementing these principles. The findings highlight the importance of incorporating environmental criteria such as energy efficiency, eco-friendly materials, and waste management; social criteria like labor standards compliance, local MSME empowerment, and gender equality; and governance criteria including transparency, anti-corruption, and tax compliance. While e-procurement provides a digital platform to improve efficiency and transparency, challenges such as limited awareness, capacity gaps, and the absence of specific ESG guidelines hinder effective implementation. To address these issues, the study proposes strategic measures, including the development of ESG-based evaluation systems, comprehensive training programs for procurement personnel, and robust monitoring frameworks. These initiatives aim to align procurement practices with the principles of Sustainable Public Procurement (SPP), ensuring that procurement contributes to environmental sustainability, social equity, and better governance. By overcoming existing barriers and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, Indonesia can position itself as a leader in sustainable procurement practices. This research provides practical recommendations to integrate ESG into procurement systems, paving the way for a more accountable, equitable, and sustainable procurement framework.

Abstract

Rock mining along the Bone River, Bone Bolango Regency, contributes to infrastructure development but also has negative environmental impacts. This study aims to analyze the effects of mining activities on river environmental quality, particularly water discoloration, erosion, river widening, and material accumulation. Data obtained indicate that mining activities cause water pollution characterized by discoloration due to increased sediment and mining waste. Moreover, rock excavation accelerates erosion along riverbanks, resulting in land degradation that affects the stability of surrounding areas. Mining activities also trigger river widening, altering the river's natural morphology and increasing flood risks. The accumulation of mining residues around the river worsens conditions by obstructing water flow, causing sedimentation, and damaging aquatic habitats. The analysis highlights the need for better environmental management to mitigate the adverse effects of rock mining. Recommendations include implementing strict environmental policies, monitoring mining operations, conducting reclamation, and ensuring sustainable waste management. Additionally, involving local communities in river rehabilitation efforts can expedite environmental recovery and sustain ecosystem balance. This study is expected to serve as a reference for policymakers in managing mining activities sustainably and preserving the Bone River ecosystem.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the potential for developing Wind Power Plants (PLTB) in Gorontalo Province, focusing on wind speed in several strategic locations. The consistent and relatively high wind speeds in coastal and lowland areas of Gorontalo make the region highly suitable for developing wind energy as a renewable energy source. This research utilizes meteorological data to measure wind speed at four locations: Batudaa Pantai 1, Batudaa Pantai 2, Kwandang, and Sumalata. The analysis reveals that wind speeds range from 6.73 m/s to 7.08 m/s, with electricity generation capacity per turbine ranging from 146 kW to 170 kW. The total electricity capacity that can be generated by 30 turbines across these locations is 18.9 MW. This potential provides a significant contribution to meeting renewable energy needs in Gorontalo and Indonesia in general. However, the development of PLTB in this area requires further consideration of technical, economic, social, and regulatory aspects. Therefore, it is recommended to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study to assess the technical and economic viability, as well as the social and economic impacts on local communities. Additionally, government support in terms of policy and fiscal incentives will expedite the development of PLTB in Gorontalo, which in turn can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and supporting sustainable energy in the future.

Abstract

Access to adequate sanitation services and safe drinking water is a fundamental need that influences public health and sustainable development. This study analyzes the percentage of households in Gorontalo Utara Regency with access to adequate sanitation and safe drinking water from 2021 to 2023, linking it to WHO health standards. The results show an increase in access to adequate sanitation from 79.03% in 2021 to 81.80% in 2022, although there was a slight decline to 81.37% in 2023. Meanwhile, access to safe drinking water showed a more positive trend, rising from 86.23% in 2021 to 90.14% in 2023. This improvement reflects the success of government programs in enhancing basic infrastructure and raising community awareness. However, challenges remain in reaching approximately 10% of households still lacking access, particularly in remote areas. According to WHO, access to adequate sanitation and safe drinking water significantly reduces the risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, and typhoid. This study highlights the importance of sustainable approaches to improving service coverage, such as developing inclusive infrastructure, educating communities on the importance of clean and healthy living behaviors, and strengthening the role of local institutions. In conclusion, although Gorontalo Utara has made significant progress, sustained efforts are needed to achieve universal access to sanitation and safe drinking water, as mandated by the SDGs.

Abstract

Human Resource Development (HRD) is one of the main priorities in realizing the progress of a region. The Human Development Index (HDI) is one of the indicators used to measure the quality of HRD. This study aims to analyze the quality of HRD in Gorontalo Province using the HDI as the main indicator. Secondary data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) were analyzed to measure three dimensions of the HDI, namely health, education, and decent living standards during the period 2019-2023. The results of the study showed an increasing trend in the HDI across all regions, although at varying rates. Gorontalo City recorded the highest HDI value, reflecting better development quality compared to other districts. Meanwhile, North Gorontalo had the lowest HDI, although there was an increase from year to year. Further analysis showed that significant disparities in the dimensions of health, education, and per capita expenditure between urban and rural areas were major challenges. This study suggests the need for equitable development through increasing access to health services, quality education, and economic infrastructure to reduce disparities between regions. These findings are expected to contribute to more inclusive policy-making for HRD development in Gorontalo Province.

Abstract

System dynamic models have been recognized as an effective approach in projecting and designing sustainable urban waste management systems. This study aims to explore the potential of system dynamic modeling in urban waste management. This study uses a literature study method with a qualitative descriptive approach that refers to various relevant previous studies. The results of the literature study show that the system dynamic model is able to map the complex relationships between variables in the waste management system, such as population growth, waste production, waste processing capacity, environmental impacts, and others. In addition, the system dynamic model can project future waste management conditions and prepare the most effective policy scenarios. Through simulations of various policy scenarios, the system dynamic model can provide insight into the impact of each scenario, both in terms of technical efficiency, operational costs, and reduction of waste generation in landfills. In implementing policy scenarios, collaboration between the government, community, and stakeholders is also needed in optimizing waste management programs.

Abstract

Public Green Open Space (RTH) is an essential element in urban spatial planning to support environmental sustainability. Through the process of photosynthesis, RTH helps absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) produced by human activities, such as transportation and industry, thus contributing to climate change mitigation. This study aims to explore the role of RTH in absorbing CO₂ and the challenges faced in its management. The study was conducted using a systematic approach through literature analysis and case studies in several cities in Indonesia and around the world. The research results indicate that vegetation type, area size, and environmental conditions are the main factors affecting the carbon absorption capacity of RTH. Large trees have a significantly higher capacity to absorb CO₂ compared to shrubs and grass, with the ability to absorb up to 250.63 tons of CO₂ per year per tree. However, challenges such as limited RTH area, urbanization pressure, and lack of public awareness remain obstacles to optimal RTH management. The recommendations of this study include increasing the area and quality of RTH through data-based strategies, community participation in management, and the development of policies that support sustainability. With proper management, RTH can function as a climate change mitigation tool while improving the quality of life for urban communities.

Abstract

The increase in human activities, such as industrialization, urbanization, and transportation, has led to air pollution, including heavy metal contamination such as lead (Pb). Lead originates from vehicle emissions, industrial activities, and fossil fuel combustion, which have detrimental effects on the environment and human health. One effective method for monitoring air pollution is biomonitoring using bioindicators, such as lichen. Lichen is sensitive to air quality and can absorb pollutants, including heavy metals, through its surface. This study uses a literature review to analyze the role of lichen as a bioindicator of heavy metal pollution, specifically lead. Several lichen species, such as *Xanthoparmelia xanthofarinosa* and *Canoparmelia aptata*, are known to accumulate heavy metals from the environment. The results show that the lead content in lichen varies depending on the pollution level in the location. Areas with high traffic have higher lead concentrations compared to areas with low traffic. The advantages of using lichen as a bioindicator include low cost, practicality, and its ability to provide long-term data on air quality. With this understanding, lichen data can be used for pollution mitigation and evidence-based policies to reduce the impact of air pollution. Further research is recommended to explore the potential of lichen in detecting other heavy metals, such as cadmium (Cd) and copper (Cu).
